And, welcome to the 3rd Sunday in Advent.

The texts for the day may be accessed here:

We begin with Isaiah - third Isaiah, this time - who offers nothing but good news to those who are returning to Judea after the exile in Babylon. Paul finished his first letter to the Thessalonians with a rather upbeat farewell; and, lastly, John's Gospel keeps us focused on John the Baptist somewhere in the Jordanian frontier near Bethany, but with a much different take on John than we find in the other gospels....  if there's time we'll talk about it.

Our readers for Advent 3 are Cheryl Thompson (Isaiah) and Patrick Herlihy (1 Thessalonians), and our prayer leader is Barbara Brown. The fourth lecture in our adult formation series - Understanding the New Testament - begins at 11:30

Communion Wafers are Available for Wednesday Morning and Sunday Eucharists

I have consecrated - i.e., blessed, set aside for this single, spiritual and sacred purpose - an ample supply of wafers and have placed them in small plastic bags. The bags will be in marked baskets - gluten free, 1, 2 or 3 - and those baskets will be placed on the altar in the brick church. They are available now for you to pick up in advance of the next Eucharist. Please take the quantity you need. (If you have more than three in your household, please utilize whatever combination will work for your family).

A word about the wafers and how they should be handled. In short, with reverence. Which, to begin with, means to not handle them more than necessary. When you arrive at home, find a good spot to place them where they will not be disturbed by daily routines.

And lastly, please do not take more than you need for more than a service or two. We will try to keep a supply on hand, but the bishop has asked that we not consecrate too many. So, be mindful of others who will want to receive them as well. Many thanks. I look forward to sharing communion more fully with you in our virtual gatherings.

From the Rector...

In addition to our Sunday worship, during Advent we will also celebrate Evensong on Sunday nights, at 7 PM. Dec 6, 13 & 20th

As is our recent tradition, we will once again mark the difficulty that some experience during the holidays with a Longest night observance on December 21.

And on Christmas Eve we will gather Virtually at 4 PM, the usual time for our family service. Our musicians will be presenting a musical prelude to the service, of both solo and choral music, and one or two carols to get you warmed up for what comes next...  at 4:30 we will begin the liturgy. One of the highlights will be our Christmas pageant, which will be performed in the place of the traditional Gospel reading. (We all know the story, and trust me, you will enjoy this version).

Eucharist will be part of the service and I mention that so that you will have time to plan to pick up consecrated wafers from the altar in the brick church. It will be fitting that - even at a distance- we will all share in the same bread.

Special note to our families with children: If you have not responded to the invitation to participate in the pageant, please do so, or reach out to Erryn Fleming. (errynfleming@gmail.com) There are plenty of parts to go around, and many opportunities to play more than one role (we want lots of angels for their big scene with the shepherds!!!)

Lastly, links for all of the worship events will be sent out along with reminders. I hope that you will join us as in this season we push back against the growing darkness in anticipation of the coming light.

Les Saints du Vin Holiday Wine Tasting

It's that time again, the last wine tasting of the year will be this coming Sunday December 13th at 4:00 via Zoom.

We usually try to make the December tasting more festive than the rest of the year, and this year we have more reasons than most to spread some joy and cheer around. So I encourage you to be creative on your holiday wine tasting. You don't have to drink wine, there is gluhwein, wassle, eggnog, hot cocoa, or any other of a host of winter drinks. Of course there is also a broad variety of seasonal foods and treats. So dress for the occasion and let's share some of our holiday spirit. Hope to see you then.

Please RSVP to John Overstrom if you plan to participate. (joverstrom01@gmail.com)

We will use the same format we have been using as follows: We will have the Zoom open for people to talk together as everyone joins in. Then we'll go around to each attendee for a quick hello and welcome before we start the wine tasting presentations.  Each household uses a wine / wines of their choice, and provides their own hors d'oeurves. Each household gets about 5 minutes to present their wine, discuss its attributes and explain / describe their food selection. The presentation is intended to be fun, it can be entertaining, interesting, informative, funny, ....it may be all about the wine, or may have little to do with the wine. The format is entirely up to the presenter similar to our usual wine tasting

Donations
We are recommending two alternatives this month, the Episcopal Church Women (EWC) at All Saints have missed their fundraising events this year and have had some unplanned expenses with a failed freezer and refrigerator in the church's kitchen. Another alternative is Project Echo which is a Calvet County Homeless shelter that we have donated to in the past. We can discuss these at the wine tasting, I'm not sure how to direct the donations to the ECW at this time, but will find out.

The church's website is:
Here's a link directly to the donation page:
To donate by credit card click on the "CLICK HERE TO GIVE ONLINE" button
Once there click on "choose a fund" and select "Giving Back to Our Community" then select the sub fund  "Project Echo".
You can put in a note that says you are part of the wine tasting group.
There is also a PayPal donation button; this option also allows you to add a notation to associate the donation with the wine tasting group.
Skills Extravaganza - Ship in a Bottle

Saturday, December 19th at 10:00, the tricks and tips for building a Ship in a Bottle will be revealed! Kip At Lee will show you how, for centuries, mariners passed the time aboard sailing ships by putting miniature boats in bottles. You’ll learn how to prepare the parts of the ship, assemble them into a bundle of sticks and cloth, slide them through the narrow neck of whisky bottle, and transform this bundle into a fully rigged boat – in this case a simplified replica of “Shamrock V”, the Americas Cup Challenger sloop of 1930. At least that’s the plan…sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. You’ll be on the edge of your seats at the critical moment!
