Save the Date for the 2018 Roast of Mary Lou Young

November 28 | 5:00 PM | The Pavilion at Discovery World

Choices are everywhere. Some of us are privileged in that our choices are between positives: steak vs seafood, Chicago vs Door County. Others in our community have to make choices with outcomes that matter to their very survival. Join us for the Roast of Mary Lou Young, retiring CEO of United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, who made a choice years ago to dedicate her life to helping our community's most vulnerable populations.

Choose to make families healthy.
Choose to save lives.
Choose to fight local poverty.

Choose to go!

World Breastfeeding Week | Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life
"Breastfeeding prevents hunger and malnutrition in all its forms and ensures food security for babies, even in times of crisis. With no additional burden on household income, breastfeeding is a low-cost way of feeding babies and contributes to poverty reduction," World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA).

At Sixteenth Street, our WIC Department spent the week celebrating breastfeeding and increasing awareness among participants to continue to encourage and support breastfeeding. WIC participants shared why they breastfeed, enjoyed breakfast parfaits with our Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and received family portraits. WIC staff walked with the Mayor and participated in the Big Latch On. It was a fantastic week connecting with participants and spreading the message of breastfeeding throughout the community.
Green space rejuvenated through resident voiced projects

Between 13th - 16th and Harrison Avenue sat an empty green space awaiting to form part of the re-naturalized Kinnickinnic River in that area. As this portion of the river is to be completed in 5 years, residents requested some temporary changes to engage neighbors in the space and create a positive environment for healthy activity. In just a short time, a number of exciting projects have been launched and even more are on their way! Some of the projects include:

1. A painted mural alongside the current concrete river channel

2. Two new garden beds and a fence at The Harrison Community Gardens

3. A new play garden and benches for seating

4. A new Kinnickinnic River Trail sign to accompany the bike/walking path that will be paved in the coming year

5. Art by local artist Gabriela Riveros at six art gates along the bike/walking path

6. Six bird houses to be installed later this year

All the projects were informed by community voices and ideas. They were made possible with the help of Sixteenth Street and many important community partners Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning, Marquette Haggerty Art Museum, KK River Neighbors in Action and GRG Playscapes.

Do you live near 13th - 16th and Harrison Avenue? Do you have ideas of other additions you'd like to see? Stop by the KK River Neighborhood Association meetings held every second Wednesday of the month at Pulaski Park Pavilion at 6 PM or contact Stephanie Mercado at 414-897-5596 or [email protected].
Community Health Center week features Sixteenth Street heroes
During the week of August 12th-18th, Community Health Center Week, Sixteenth Street launched a social campaign, #iamcommunityhealth, to raise awareness about our mission and showcase the dedicated staff who bring more than healthcare to our community every day.

Across the nation more than 205,000 people - healthcare heroes - work at health centers in positions that include clinicians, nurses, social workers, outreach works, financial counselors and dental hygienists, behavioral health specialists, and much more. Working together, our healthcare heroes produce innovative solutions to the most pressing healthcare issues in our communities. They reach beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the factors that may cause sickness, such as lack of nutrition, mental illness, homelessness and substance use disorders. It is their work that has helped reduce health care costs and reduce chronic disease, generating a record of success and along with it a long tradition of bipartisan support in Congress.

Check out our #iamcommunityhealth videos at www.facebook.com/sschc and see how our healthcare heroes make their mark in our community every day.
HIV Department wows HRSA reviewers

In late July, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) reviewers visited Sixteenth Street's HIV Department as part of a regular site evaluation process. They dove deep into the national HIV requirements and our Department's ability to meet each one. The HIV Department received rave reviews and comments during their exist interview. Compliments were awarded for the excellent care they deliver, their preparedness for the visit, the team efficiency they demonstrate and the excellent financial work, among others. A reviewer said, "Your patients are so happy with the care they receive...Sixteenth Street [HIV Department] is totally immersed in the culture and the neighborhood in everything that you do." Congratulations to the HIV Department!
My Sixteenth Street Story | A Letter to my Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

"Aracelis made sure that I was ok. It was because of her that I didn't give formula to my baby. It was because of her I was able to breastfeed full time. It was an honor for me and my son to be able to count on someone like Aracelis in my breastfeeding process."

"Dear Aracelis,

I want to thank you for helping me with the breastfeeding process. For me, it is so satisfying to be able to say that I was a nursing mother.
For my first child, I was in Puerto Rico. I had my son through cesarean. I was alone in the nursery and I had no support to breastfeed. I felt desperate from the cesarean pain and was never able to breastfeed..."
