President's Message
Focus on the Well-Being of CNYWBA Members

As with other service professionals, lawyers can fall prey to stress and burnout and, in some cases, those stressors can lead to the impairment of a lawyer's professional judgment and duties. Last summer the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being issued a comprehensive report titled The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change. Citing recent studies showing that many in the legal profession are languishing, the report encourages all stakeholders, including bar associations, to focus on lawyers' well-being, which is defined as a continuous process whereby lawyers seek to thrive in various areas, including emotional and physical health, occupational pursuits, creative or intellectual endeavors and social connections with others.

Part of the mission of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York ("WBASNY") is to promote the well-being of women. WBASNY recently created a Wellness Committee that will focus on the well-being of its members. Please take advantage of the resources that will be offered through WBASNY once the Wellness Committee's work is established.

The Central New York Women's Bar Association ("CNYWBA"), a chapter of WBASNY, is equally committed to the well-being of its members. Towards that mission, CNYWBA holds various events each year that promote its members' professional growth, quality of life and quality in the profession. CNYWBA will endeavor to continue the tradition this upcoming year by offering programs promoting the well-being of our members, including continuing legal education on professionalism (which encompasses ethics and civility) and mentoring. Finally, CNYWBA will incorporate some best practices in connection with its activities and meetings by offering well-being-related activities at certain events, organizing some functions that are family-friendly and, when possible, scheduling programming during times that generally do not interfere with lawyers' personal and/or family time.

As we lay the groundwork for this effort, CNYWBA President Nicole Marlow-Jones welcomes your thoughts and suggestions regarding well-being topics you would like to see addressed at upcoming CNYWBA events and programs. Please feel free to contact CNYWBA via e-mail at cnywba@gmail.com.
