Fire Prevention and Preparedness Update
With the ongoing fires around the State, the City continues to focus on fire preparedness and prevention in our community, as described by City Manager Jim McCann at the Mill Valley City Council meeting on August 7, 2018. We are currently supporting the firefighting efforts to the north - five of our Fire Department staff have been deployed to assist at the Mendocino Complex Fire in Mendocino and Lake Counties. Battalion Chief Michael St. John has been part of the incident command for this devastating fire, and four of our firefighters and one of our fire engines are deployed there as well.

Private Bus and Shuttle Operations
At their meeting on July 30, the City Council heard an informational update on current regulations governing private charter vehicles and tour operations within Mill Valley City limits.
Council received a presentation by Interim Police Chief Jacqueline Graf-Reis, regarding our rules and practices. She stated that there are currently no tour operators in Mill Valley, and she detailed the procedures required if a business wanted to conduct tours in Mill Valley, which include obtaining a business license, and following all City regulations regarding permissible travel routes and parking restrictions.

Planning Commission and City Council to Consider Telecommunications Ordinance
With growing demand to support 4G and 5G technology for broadband and data services, the wireless telecommunications industry has begun to pursue the installation of smaller cell and distributed antenna systems throughout Marin County including on facilities in the public right-of-way. The City of Mill Valley is working to update our regulations to specifically address the installation, location, appearance and maintenance of wireless telecommunication facilities, with an urgency ordinance scheduled for the Planning Commission this month and City Council adoption in early September.

Mill Valley's 2018 Street Slurry Project is Underway!
Nine residential streets and two public parking lots are included in this portion of the City's annual pavement improvement project.
Work is planned to begin the week of August 12 and may carry over to the week of August 19.

Steps, Lanes and Paths Update
City work crews responded to a request by an 86-year old Mill Valley resident to install handrails on the steps near her home.
The steps, known as "SLP 184" are located between Marguerite Ave. and Magee Ave. and had been in need of handrails and some step repairs. Our Public Works Department received the request and coordinated the repairs, which wrapped up this week. Thanks to all involved!

Mill Valley Bicycle Friendly Task Force Survey
The City of Mill Valley adopted the 2017 Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan last November. The Plan outlines the City's bicycle and pedestrian policies and priorities. One of the goals is to become a "Bicycle Friendly City." To do so, we are conducting a survey to learn more about bicycle-related transportation behaviors in our community. Your responses will help us further inform and improve our bicycle programs and facilities.

Yellow School Bus Passes are on Sale
The Mill Valley School District, in partnership with the City of Mill Valley, the County of Marin, and Marin Transit, is pleased to continue the yellow school bus program that was first piloted in 2016/17.

Bayfront Playfield Renovation Completed
Did you know the City of Mill Valley operates and maintains approximately 11 acres of sport fields for use by organized sports teams? The fields support the play of between 4-5,000 annual participants!
These fields require regular repair to keep them in prime shape for community use. This summer, our Parks crew removed all the old sod and soil from Bayfront Playfield. It will reopen September 2nd.

Mill Valley Fire Department Bolsters Capabilities in Wildland Fire Response
The Mill Valley Fire Department has recently taken delivery of a new four-wheel-drive wildland fire engine. The new engine replaces a 20-year-old existing engine.

WWTP Rehabilitation Project Update
The Sewerage Agency of Southern Marin launched their 2-year, $20 million Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) rehabilitation project in April 2018. Improvements include infrastructure modernization, increased reliability and efficiency, electrical upgrades, and odor reduction.

Let's form the longest literary picnic table! Join the Mill Valley Public Library and KQED as we add table after table to form one gigantic picnic spread. Feast on a picnic lunch (provided), partake in literary trivia, and mix and mingle as you rotate around the table and chat about The Great American Read Top 100 Books. We'll also have a separate table with crafts and activities just for kids. No dogs please (except service dogs). Reservations required.

9 Carmelita Avenue - Modify the Conditions of Approval for a Tree Removal- PL18-4674 -
Zoning Administrator approved the above-referenced project, modifying the Conditions of Approval by reducing tree mitigation required for the removal of two heritage coast redwoods that are damaging the foundation of the house (structural damage has been evaluated by a civil engineer).

Planning Commission - July 24, 2018
144, 160, AND 178 Corte Madera Ave and 9 Eldridge Ave - Extension of an Approved Tentative Subdivision Map - D05-3244 - Planning Commission approved a three-year extension of an approved Tentative Map application. The extension also extends the July 18, 2016 approval of the Special Development Permit and Design Review application (File D05-3244) for three-years, ending July 18, 2021.
41 Ethel Avenue - Design Review - PL17-4643 - Planning Commission approved the design review application to demolish the existing two-story 2,062 square foot single-family home with an attached 410 square foot carport and develop a new 2,522 square foot three-story single-family dwelling with an attached 263 square foot garage on a 7,265 square foot lot.
571 Throckmorton Avenue - Design Review - PL18-4694 - Planning Commission approved the Design Review application to remodel and expand the existing one story 2,243 square foot single family dwelling with an attached 520 square foot garage. The existing first floor is reduced to 2,188 square feet of living area with an attached 530 square foot garage, adds a 1,572 square foot second story (including a 503 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit, updates exterior finishes, and adds a new deck at the rear of the residence.

City Council Meeting - July 30, 2018
The City Council was introduced to new City Staff members Supervising Librarian Andrew Murphy and Supervising Librarian Natalie McCall, and congratulated Natasha Lowell on her promotion to Library Supervisor.

- A Resolution authorizing a collection rate application from Mill Valley Refuse Service for a 14.60% increase in Solid Waste Collection Services Effective July 1, 2018.
- A Resolution Designating Councilmember Sloan as an Additional Alternate Delegate to Represent the City at the September 12 - 14, 2018 Annual League of California Cities Conference.
- A Resolution Approving the Simon's Way (542 Miller Avenue) Subdivision Improvement Agreement Amendment.

he City's response to the Marin County Grand Jury Report entitled 'Yellow School Bus for Traffic Congestion," as well as t
he City's Bicycle Friendly Community Application.

City Council Meeting - August 6, 2018
Council adopted Resolutions:
- Accepting the Throckmorton/Seaver Gap Closure Project as complete.
- Approving a 2018 Streets and Sewer plans, specifications and engineering, and authorizing the City Manager to execute a contract.
Council considered a $250,000 Measure A allocation from TAM for initiation of the E. Blithedale Rehabilitation scoping and design efforts.
Council received a presentation and gave direction regarding the outline and direction of elements for inclusion in the City's Long-Term Financial Plan.
