The Chamber has recently launched a new Buy Local campaign that highlights what makes Gainesville unique and celebrates the talent we have here in our favorite community. EAT and DRINK GNV are two of those that we are most proud of and so we are very excited to host our very first Brewery Tour.
Join us as we visit all of our Member Breweries including:
- Big Top Brewing
- Blackadder Brewing
- Cypress & Grove Brewing
- First Magnitude Brewing
- Swamp Head Brewery
.
We will also provide food, snacks, and plenty of water along the way.
Guests will meet at Dos Papas at 3:00pm (Parking available). We'll spend approximately 45 minutes at each location before boarding a bus and traveling to the next location. Each guest will receive a commemorative tumbler, a souvenir lanyard, and food and beverage (BEER!) at each location.
Space is limited so be sure to book your spot early!

- Step 4 - We will provide a table, two chairs, and if needed, ample room to screen and interview prospects.

EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Buchholz High student wins international geography championship
Buchholz High School sophomore Albert Zhang is the new champion of the prestigious 2019 International Geography Olympiad (iGEO), beating out more than 160 of the world’s top geography students to win the first place medal.
The Olympiad, which was held in Hong Kong last week, drew teams from 43 nations. With his top score, Zhang led the U.S. team to an overall 2
nd
place finish, its highest finish ever. His three teammates earned one silver medal and two bronze medals.
Zhang said he was surprised when he was called up during the awards ceremony as the competition’s winner.
“I never felt like I aced any particular part of the competition, and I often thought that the other members of Team USA came up with smarter and more creative answers than mine,” he said. “At the award ceremony, when two of my teammates received bronze medals, the two of us that remained were absolutely terrified; we thought that we weren't going to get a medal at all.”
The international competition consisted of three elements. Those elements included a written exam, a multi-media exam that used photos, videos and audio input to test critical thinking skills, and a fieldwork exam. That trip required competitors to travel into the host city to collect data, then use the data to create maps and develop planning ideas.
Before traveling to Hong Kong, Zhang attended a short training camp with his U.S. teammates so they could get to know each other and practice fieldwork.
Zhang says the recent unrest in Hong Kong and a typhoon created some logistical issues, but he and his fellow competitors were still able to attend local cultural events, go on excursions and socialize with geography enthusiasts from around the globe. Participants even had the opportunity to develop and perform their own cultural presentations near the end of the event, which Zhang said was the most memorable part of the trip.
“It was an amazing experience,” said Zhang. “Including the training camp, it was ten packed and exciting days that I will never forget.”
Zhang earned his spot on the U.S. team after winning the United States Geography Olympiad in May.
He says he plans to compete for a spot on the national team again in 2020.
“I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to maybe go to Istanbul for next year’s competition,” he said.

Pepine Realty is pleased to announce to be selected as one of 50 companies from more than 500 nominees for Florida Companies to Watch, a statewide program managed by economic development group GrowFL. Pepine Realty was also the only business selected from North Central Florida and the only real estate sales company in the industry recognized for this award.
Pepine Realty’s management team, competitive market position and strong community involvement were among several factors that put them in contention for the award. Founder and CEO Betsy Pepine attributes the growth of Pepine Realty to the support the community has shown and the agents and staff that have worked tirelessly toward the company’s vision.
“These stand-out companies are all led by entrepreneurs, and have demonstrated their capacity and intent to grow,” said Dr. Tom O’Neal, GrowFL executive director. “They also all have critical intellectual property or a niche position that gives them a competitive edge in their markets,” he said.
From 2015 through 2018, these companies generated $923 million in revenue and added 935 employees, reflecting a 123.9% increase in revenue and 131% increase in jobs for the four-year period. That translates into a 31% average annual revenue growth and 32.2% average annual growth in employees. These companies projected continued growth in 2019, with a 34.8% revenue increase and 36.8% growth in employees compared to 2018.

Bread of the Mighty Food Bank

Help Bread of the Mighty tell the story of hunger in our community!
In 2018, Bread of the Mighty Food Bank distributed 7.9 million pounds of food to those in need in Alachua, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy and Lafayette counties. That’s 6.6 million meals.
Their “Take Action” Food and Fund Drive for Hunger Action Month 2019 kicks off Thursday September 12. They are asking for support in their mission to provide food, hope and encouragement to help nourish the hungry and food insecure in our community. Let’s take action September 12.
Ways to help:
- Wear Orange to support Hunger Action.
- Come to Bread of the Mighty for a tour.
- Put together a food drive in your neighborhood, church, business, school or organization and drop it off to us at 325 NW 10th Ave M-F 8am-4pm.
- Donate funds in person or at our website breadofthemighty.org. Remember $1 provides 10 meals.
- Become a Hunger Hero. Our goal is to have 1,000 Hunger Hero’s sign up at breadofthemighty.org for just $15 a month. This goal will bring us $180,000 and provide 1,800,000 meals per year.
