FISCAL YEAR 2019 STARTING OFF JUST AS BUSY AS 2018

Fiscal Year 2018 was a busy year. We saw an increase in animals received into the Shelter and through transfers of pets both in and out. Fortunately, our adoptions were up as well! We also performed almost double the surgeries of Fiscal Year 2017, and our Animal Control officers received twice as many calls as were received the prior year.

Fiscal Year 2019 looks like the trend will continue. In late July, the Shelter reached maximum capacity for animals with more than 150 cats and 100 dogs in the building. Kitten season continues to hit the Shelter hard, and our numbers are still high as of today with our cat population at 140% capacity.

Donations from the community are so important to the Shelter,

and now we could use your help more than ever.

With so many animals in the building, it's putting a strain on Shelter resources. While the staff continues to provide excellent care, there just aren't enough people to give the animals as much playtime as we'd like them to have. If you've ever thought of volunteering or fostering, now is the perfect time to ensure our animals get the love and attention they need.

Fostering is easy! We provide all of the essentials for the animals, so you don't have to worry about the cost. All you need to provide is a little love to the animals. FIRST LUCKY DOG AND VETERAN MATCHED THROUGH

"PETS FOR PATRIOTS"

The Cheyenne Animal Shelter partnered with Pets for Patriots, Inc., a nonprofit that saves the lives of people and pets through companion pet adoption for United States military veterans in early 2018.

Working with Pets for Patriots, the program gives local veterans, active duty military members and their families the gift of unconditional love while providing the most overlooked cats and dogs a second chance at life.

Individuals are welcome from all United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers. Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: cat or dog two years or older, cat or dog with special needs, or dog over 40 pounds.

Individuals must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide relevant eligibility documents. Approval typically takes no more than two business days, after which they can visit the Shelter to find their new best friend.

The Cheyenne Animal Shelter successfully completed it's first adoption through Pets for Patriots over the weekend. The adopter, David, was pre-approved and was able to find a dog at the Shelter on Saturday, July 28th. Congratulations David and Max!

NEW VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR MAKING CHANGES TO PROGRAM

Changes are coming to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter's Volunteer program. In the past, the position was a combined position, which meant the coordinator did not get to put many hours toward the volunteer program due to other duties. Now the Cheyenne Animal Shelter is introducing its new Volunteer Coordinator, Marissa, who is bringing some changes with her new role.

To volunteer with the Shelter, first you'll attend a volunteer information session. In this session you'll learn the basics about the Shelter, including where animals comes from, funding, how the Shelter operates, etc. After the session, if you're still interested in volunteering, you'll pay a small fee and attend an orientation session. These steps are similar to our current process. However, it's what happens next where Marissa is bringing some changes.

In her full-time position, Marissa will be able to devote her full attention to you, meaning she will be more "hands on" with volunteers during their training. She's around to answer questions at [email protected] or 307-269-0967, and she's now offering volunteers a mentorship program. This gives volunteers an opportunity to get hands-on experience at the Shelter, while Marissa is with you to answer any questions you might have.

"We can't function without volunteers. They are extremely important to the Shelter," Marissa said, "I'm very excited about taking over this position, because I want to give our volunteers the priority and attention they deserve."

Volunteers give staff the opportunity to focus on animals that are not yet on the adoption floor, to do dishes and laundry, and work that needs to be done in other areas of the Shelter. Without YOU our animals wouldn't get as much mental stimulation, exercise and socialization. There are many opportunities for volunteers, from hands-on experience with the animals to office work.
