Kinnaird Bagpipes Newsletter

October  2019

As much as you may not want to think about Christmas just yet, please keep in mind that some special order items, including bagpipes and Redpipes, can take around 10-12 weeks for delivery, sometimes longer during the busy season. Order now to avoid disappointment!

Also, if you want to order anything that contains blackwood (including bagpipes, practice chanters, etc.), a CITES permit is still currently required at this point and it can take several weeks to get a permit, so plan ahead! The requirement is expected to be lifted late November- early December, but until then, the permits are still in effect.

With Halloween right around the corner, did you know that some of the most famous literary "monsters" have connections to Scotland?

Dracula:   Bram Stoker would frequently visit Cruden Bay.  Slains Castle is said to have been the inspiration for Dracula's castle and the eerie setting helped him to create the famous character.

Frankenstein:   Dr Frankenstein and the monster pass through Edinburgh on their way to the Orkney Islands.  The author, Mary Shelley, and her husband honeymooned in Edinburgh during a time when body snatching was common and there were also some medical theories about using electricity to reanimate dead tissue.

Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde :  Robert Louis Stevenson would often sit in the empty Greyfriars kirkyard and think, perhaps coming up with his characters.  It is said that he based his story on an 18th century Edinburgh man who was a respected businessman by day and a thief by night.

Scottish Trivia

Most are aware of William Wallace's leadership of the resistance to English occupation of Scotland, but equally important was Andrew Moray. He did for the north what Wallace did for the south.  They joined forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge where they defeated the English forces. However, Moray was injured and later died from those injuries.

Scottish Humor

In Alford, Aberdeenshire, a small boy was one of the contestants at a children's cookery contest. The judge made a great show of tasting his iced cakes and saying how delicious they were. He glowed with pride. Then the judge asked how he had managed to get such a lovely gloss on the icing. How had he managed that? "I lick them" he replied.

Product Reviews

Edge Drone Reeds

"I love these Edge drone reeds. They literally saved my 2017 McCallums from being sold off, as I was never really happy with my sound. Turns out it was just my previous synthetic drone reeds that I was unhappy with. The Edge reeds have a great bold sound and are easy to adjust the strength with the adjustment key. The consistent strike ins have improved my confidence and I'm in love with my pipes again!"
