Research Showcase Highlights
The 2019 FAU Research Showcase saw more than 300 people come through the doors at FAU Tech Runway last week to hear about some of university’s top research initiatives. The showcase kicked off Thursday with a lively panel discussing artificial intelligence followed by the induction of faculty with recently awarded patents into the FAU Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors.
 
The event featured dozens of poster and live presentations throughout the day Friday. All FAU’s colleges and research institutes showed off top investigators and projects.


Faculty Receive National Academies’ Early-Career Research Fellowships

Florida Atlantic University Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute faculty member, Andia Chaves Fonnegra, Ph.D, received a Gulf Research Program's 2019 Early-Career Research Fellowship of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Now in its fifth year, the fellowship program supports the development of emerging scientific leaders who are prepared to work at the intersections of environmental health, community health and resilience and offshore energy system safety in the Gulf of Mexico and other coastal regions in the United States.

Faculty Spotlight: Ning Quan, Ph.D.

Ning Quan, Ph.D. recently joined FAU as a professor of biomedical science in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and member of the FAU Brain Institute. Dr. Quan's world-renowned studies of inflammation are helping to change how scientists understand the relationship between the central nervous system and the immune system.
Partner Spotlight

Scripps Research Chemistry Professor Matthew D. Disney, Ph.D., will host a new "RBA: From Biology to Drug Discovery" symposium aimed at bringing together leading scholars in RNA biology at the Florida campus of Scripps Research on Dec. 5. The conference, titled “RNA: From Biology to Drug Discovery,” will feature talks by noted scientists in RNA biophysics, sequence, structure, function, therapeutic targeting and computation.

Smiling for STEM!

Several times a year, the Florida Atlantic University Brain Neuroscience trainees part of the Ascend Program visit the after-school classrooms at the Edna W. Runner Tutorial Center for "Fun Fridays." Our volunteers teach kids about the brain through fun, interactive activities. It's an opportunity for youth to learn from FAU students and vice-versa! The next "Fun Friday" is Oct. 4.

Florida Atlantic University Brain Institute 's Ascend Program is a semi-finalist for a Healthier Jupiter mini-grant! Come out to the Healthy Community Grant BBQ on Oct. 12 at the Jupiter Community Center from 1-3:30 p.m. to cast your vote in support the FAU Brain Institute's Ascend Program!


The Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) will host the 5th Annual Charity Softball Game and Kids Fest. The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. at the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Stanley Steemer will play John C. Cassidy Air Conditioning from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. First Service Residential will play the winner from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy arts and crafts, bounce houses, inflatable slides, autograph signing and stick around for the giveaways. Tickets are $10 for kids. Adults are free.

FAU Jupiter Events
The John D. MacArthur Campus presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers groundbreaking programs in research and education. Two of the world’s leading research organizations, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Research Institute are located on the campus and offer high school, undergraduate and graduate students transformational experiences not found anywhere else in the world. The campus is home to the nationally-ranked Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College which provides 440 students with a live-in, all-honors educational experience and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the largest membership program of its kind in the nation. Recognized as a center of scientific activity, the campus also serves as the headquarters for two of FAU’s primary research organizations, the Brain Institute and the Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention (I-HEALTH).
