The mission of the Center for Independent Living of North Central Florida (CILNCF) is to empower people with disabilities to exert their individual rights to live as independently as possible, make personal life choices and achieve full community inclusion.
One in 4 people in Gainesville have a disability and the Center for Independent Living offers them the services to live healthier, longer, and more fulfilled lives. Their programs allow our residents to live independently in the community and they are essential in ensuring the rights, inclusion, and diversity of the most vulnerable people in Gainesville. They accomplish this through specific services such as Employment, Wheelchair Ramp Building, ADA Paratransit Screenings, Emergency Preparedness, Sign Language Interpreting, Disability Awareness Trainings, our youth programs, and much more!
The Center for Independent Living provides services to individuals with disabilities on a cross-disability basis (all types of disabilities), ages 14 and up. They are also consumer-controlled, having at least 51% of people with disabilities compromising both the governing board of directors as well as staff.
The best way for people to get involved with the Center for Independent Living is by learning about their services, the people they touch, and sending as many people to them that can benefit from their wonderful services and excellent staff. The center welcomes volunteers to share their interest, skills, and time to assist others in their journey towards independence. The CIL also accepts medical devices and adaptive equipment, various donations, materials, and funds to serve the community.

wrote an extensive story on Lake City's municipal website falling victim to ransomware, with all city documents being held hostage unless a sum of $460,000 was paid.
In June,
Riviera Beach
's website was hacked and seized until a ransom of $600,000 was paid.
Last year, the same happened to the
city of Atlanta
, who was forced to pay $51,000 to Iranian hackers, but millions to recover necessary data and files.
Company property and personal information can be taken easily by ransomware hackers, and it's important to have defense in mind. While internet viruses are less common than they used to be, ransomware has filled the void with new dangers for users.

More About Dr. Jerry Parrish
Dr. Jerry D. Parrish is the Chief Economist and the Director of Research for the Florida Chamber Foundation. In that role, he is responsible for conducting in-depth analyses on the Florida economy and on solutions to help secure Florida’s future.
Dr. Parrish previously was the Chief Economist and Director of the Center for Competitive Florida at Florida TaxWatch. Prior to that position, he served as the Associate Director of the Center for Economic Forecasting & Analysis (CEFA) at Florida State University, and has many years of experience in the private sector in management roles at international manufacturing companies.
Dr. Parrish is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the Masters in Applied Economics Program at Florida State University. He earned a B.S. in Agricultural Business and Economics from Auburn University, an M.B.A. from Bellarmine University, an M.S. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Auburn University. He regularly publishes research reports and articles on the Florida economy and Florida’s competitiveness.

Gainesville Country Club announces new development Sandhill Point
Residential community will appeal to new audiences
Gainesville, FL – July 29, 2019 - The Gainesville Country Club announced today it signed a letter of intent to purchase nearly 30-acres of property adjacent to the Club for development of a new residential community, Sandhill Point, which will offer a unique combination of residential options with membership to the Gainesville Country Club.
Located just east of the existing Gainesville Country Club, Sandhill Point will feature up to 300 homes designed for young professionals, young families and retirees alike. A distinguishing aspect of the community is the creation of new home lots on the George Cobb championship golf course. The inspiration for the development stems from the Club’s desire for an inclusive, fun and family‐friendly community. The new development will feature semi-custom and custom homes starting at 1,900 square feet. Proposal solicitation has begun for due diligence, concept planning and real estate marketing services. Pre-sales will commence this fall and construction is expected to begin within nine months.
“We are honored to develop one of the last remaining parcels with direct access to the Club,” said Erin Henderson, Vice-President. “Like the development of the Gainesville Country Club was at its inception, Sandhill Point will be a unique community bringing a fun, new and exciting lifestyle experience to Gainesville.”
Each home at Sandhill Point will include membership at the Gainesville Country Club providing residents with access to all of the Club’s amenities, including the tennis complex, private golf course, pool complex, clubhouse and distinctive restaurants.

Pan American Games in Peru Carry Connections to the Ocala Jockey Club
Reddick, FL – August 1, 2019 – The Ocala Jockey Club is set to cheer for its past competitors and clients representing their countries in the eventing discipline at the Pan American Games taking place August 2-4 in Lima, Peru (“Pan Am Games”).
Team USA is represented by five riders at the Pan Am Games, all of which have previously competed at the annual Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event. The U.S. Eventing Team will compete August 2 – 4 at the Escuela de Equitación del Ejército La Molina in Lima, Peru. Boyd Martin will ride Tsetserleg, joined by Tamie Smith with Fleeceworks Royal, Lynn Symansky with RF Cool Play, Doug Payne with Starr Witness, and Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp with Cooley Quicksilver as reserves. The Ocala Jockey Club is cheering on Team USA as they look to get on the podium and to earn the chance to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games next summer. This year’s 4th annual Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event is set to run November 14-17, 2019. This year’s CCI4-L and CCI4-S divisions will serve as a qualifying event to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the only one to be held in the Southeast. The cross-country course will be designed by Olympic Individual Silver medalist Clayton Fredericks along with Mike Etherington-Smith, the course designer for the Sydney and Beijing Olympic Games, as Assistant Course Designer. Shelley Page, the eventing discipline organizer at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games, is the Event Organizer.
The OJC facility, with its rolling hills and showcase old-growth Spanish-moss-laden oak trees, is a crown jewel in the horse country of Ocala, Florida. About 200 acres of the 950-acre Ocala Jockey Club property serve as a Thoroughbred training farm and to stand stallions. United Way of North Central Florida Celebrates $4 million in Prescription Savings
Partnership with FamilyWize delivers significant savings on prescription medications through its free, easy to use prescription discount card
GAINESVILLE, FL (Aug. 1, 2019) — United Way of North Central Florida (UWNCFL) announced that 43,840 local residents have saved more than $4 million on their prescription medications, thanks to its partnership with FamilyWize, an organization focused on improving the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.
Through this partnership, United Way Worldwide has helped promote the free, easy to use FamilyWize Prescription Discount Card, which has helped more than 13 million Americans save more than $1.5 billion on their prescriptions.
“People should never have to choose between putting food on the table or taking their prescription medication,” said UWNCFL President & CEO Mona Gil de Gibaja “That’s why we partner with FamilyWize. Their free prescription discount card can reduce the costs of prescriptions for anyone who uses it. It’s an extremely valuable resource that everyone should use, regardless of their financial or insurance situation.”
The FamilyWize card immediately lowers the cost of prescription medications by an average of 45 percent for people with and without insurance. Just by presenting the FamilyWize card or mobile app at their local pharmacy, people can save on the cost of their medicine, with no strings attached.
“We’re excited to see the people of North Central Florida realize the benefits of our prescription discount card,” said Vickie Nisbet, Director of Community Relations at FamilyWize. “We hope that they continue to use the card and share it with others, as it can provide a significant savings.”

This list is put together based on a school's academics, admission rate, and a low student to teacher ratio. Florida State is ranked ninth on the list.
