LSC Campus Honors Veterans
Lake Superior College acknowledged Veterans Day last Wednesday, November 6 as the campus was closed on Monday for the official holiday. The program was led by Minnesota Department of Veteran's Affairs representative David Martin who provided a history of Veterans Day and a Missing Military Personnel Table Recitation. His son, Solomon Martin, who is in the Twin Ports Naval Cadets Corp, also participated. Music included a performance by the Lake Superior College Choir under the direction of Calland Metts. 
TRIO SSS Celebrates First Generation Day
Students, staff and faculty celebrated national First Generation Day last Thursday with cake, coffee and a group photo. First Generation Day celebrates students and employees whose parents did not complete a four-year degree. Nearly 55% of LSC students are first generation students.

Students Train to Identify and Reduce Invasive Species on LSC Campus

Nearly sixty LSC students enrolled in Environmental Science, General Biology and Issues in Global Ecology courses began a two-part training about invasive species on campus last week when they learned to identify and remove buckthorn by the H Building.

Using LSC's forest as a Living Lab, the students and faculty are working with the Duluth CISMA (Collaborative Invasive Species Management Area) and the City of Duluth's Invaders volunteers. The students tackled buckthorn in the Miller Creek ravine on Wednesday, November 13 for a full field experience.

  • The second season of IceHawks Basketball is now underway! The men's basketball season tipped-off last night at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College with the IceHawks winning their season debut 75-64 over the Thunder. Way to go IceHawks!

  • Employee open enrollment to change insurance benefits is open through November 20. LSC HR representatives will be at the Student Life kiosk on Wednesday, November 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to answer questions.

  • Just in time for the freezing cold weather, the LSC Store offers $20 LSC sweatpants plus a free coffee mug until November 25 (while supplies last).

  • In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the following events are open to all on campus: Blanket interactive exercise and lunch, Friday, November 15, 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Student Lounge; Lunchtime documentaries, Monday, November 18, Thursday to November 21, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Intercultural Center (M150).


  • LSC's Computer Information Systems department and the U.S. Department of Defense will offer a free Cybersecurity Careers Adult Workshop Friday, November 15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is targeted toward anyone 18 and older who is considering a new career and have an interest in technology, networking, programming and cybersecurity.


  • The LSC Social Committee invites you to happy hour at Buffalo Wild Wings on Wednesday, November 20 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendars for the Thursday, December 12 Holiday Party at Aces on First from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the campus Holiday Potluck in the Atrium on Wednesday, December 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
