The last fiscal year proved to be one of the most challenging in the history of The Children's Trust. From COVID-19, to the census, to racial unrest and a turbulent election season, The Trust was there for the community the entire time. Grant Opportunities Available Now
Help Me Grow: Request for Proposals (RFP)
To select one entity to implement the Help Me Grow Florida (HMGF) system model in Miami-Dade County for early identification of developmental and/or behavioral concerns in children ages birth through 8 years old, including linking families with community-based services and supports.
Response Deadline: March 22, 2021, 5 p.m.

Afterschool Meals Program Food Sponsor: Request for Qualifications (RFQ)
To select one entity as an approved Department of Health (DOH) Afterschool Meals Program (AMP) Food Sponsor in Miami-Dade County to provide daily snacks (during after-school hours), lunches (when programs operate during full days), suppers (for sites serving participants in need) and beverages for participating children in The Children’s Trust funded youth development (YD) programs.
Response Deadline: April 19, 2021, 5 p.m.
Reading Explorers Available to Support Youth After-School & Summer Programs 
Reading Explorers coaches are eager to support youth after-school program staff in their work with children whether they are offering in-person, virtual or hybrid services. Coaching is personalized to further enhance both whole group and differentiated literacy instruction, and includes free evidence-based resources and curriculum materials to maximize students’ learning.

Planning for summer? Reading Explorers can help your program gear up to combat the COVID-19 learning slide. We can provide coaching to plan effective literacy programming to boost students’ success. We also have a highly-trained intervention team of certified tutors ready to deploy to YAS and early childhood education programs participating in Thrive by 5 to provide small-group tutoring to children entering grades K-2.

20-21 Renewal Timeline and Data Entry Reminder 
Attention all Trust-funded providers! Please note the renewals of our major initiatives will start in March and end in May 2021. It is imperative that your data is up to date in Trust Central-SAMIS. If you are experiencing any issues with data entry, please inform your program manager as soon as possible. As a reminder, the due date for all data entry for services provided through January 31, is February 28. Any data entered beyond that will not be taken into consideration for renewals.
Youth After-School K-5 Reminders
K-5 Attendance 
Daily attendance should be entered as usual. For participants that have moved from virtual to in-person services, ensure that attendance is no longer being entered under the virtual group. Attendance must be entered under the group that is attached to the site at which the participant attends. Group naming conventions should still include the fiscal year and the timeframe. Temporary site changes due to COVID protocols do not require a new group.

Assessments 
Mid-test assessments should have been completed by this time and should be entered as a mid-test admin point in SAMIS. As a reminder for providers that have transitioned back to in-person programming from virtual, the PACER assessment should have been completed at this time. If a participant is being tested with one of the assessments for the first time, as is the case for the PACER, this assessment score should also be entered as a mid-test admin-point, as it is being administered within the mid-test admin point timeframe.
Virtual SPARK Training is Back!
The Children's Trust is sponsoring SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) training! These trainings are for contracted Youth Development K-5 providers using SPARK curriculum for fitness.

All trainings are held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Zoom link is provided after registration. Please limit registrations to two staff per agency per training. Go to Trust Academy to register!
Florida Grade Level Reading Webinars Supporting Early Reading
The Miami-Dade Grade Level Reading Campaign encourages you to sign up for the Florida Grade Level Reading Campaign's free webinar to support early reading presented by Dr. Paige Pullen from the Lastinger Center at the University of Florida. The intended audience is pre-K to 3rd grade after-school staff, summer learning staff, reading volunteers, paraprofessionals, etc. Certificates of participation will be provided at the end of the 1-hour webinar.

The 10:30 a.m. February 19 session is entitled "What is Phonological Awareness Anyway? Fun Games to Improve Students' Early Reading Development."
The Advocacy Network on Disabilities Training Opportunities *

An Administrator's Overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act: Are you an Administrator, site director, or the person responsible for your organization meeting its legal obligations under the ADA? Join us to be sure you are up to date on enrollment, eligibility, reasonable accommodations, policies and procedures, and more.

To receive credit, participants must be present throughout the training with their cameras on, and achieve 80% on the learning assessment. Zoom access information provided upon registration.

Injury Prevention Trainings

Program Support and Youth Voice Training From Project RISE
Providing programs with creative ideas/materials to make activities happen! 
As we navigate together through providing programming during a pandemic, Project RISE has found that programs may need extra materials.

  • Providers who are running in-person programming may find that they need more materials to avoid children touching shared items (i.e. balls, arts & crafts materials such as markers, glue, scissors, ingredients for science experiments, etc.) 
  • Providers who are running virtual programming may find that sending children and youth "activity kits" can allow them to do hands-on projects at home. This can increase the variety of activities that can be conducted virtually.

Project RISE can purchase materials for programs, deliver them and provide staff with coaching designed to best utilize these materials. For more information, please fill out the Request Coaching Assistance form here.

Youth Voice Training from Project RISE 
Are you providing children and youth with authentic, meaningful choices throughout your program? Does your program reflect the input of the youth involved? Participants will learn how to provide meaningful choices within activities and opportunities for youth input within the youth program itself. Take a plan to implement back to your program and learn more about items on the SEL-PQA that will help you increase your CAT scores. The training takes place February 24, from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m.

The mayor, in partnership with The Miami Foundation, civic partners, and other elected leaders, has launched thrive305, a powerful and inclusive civic engagement initiative that leverages Miami-Dade's biggest asset: you, its residents. Thrive305 will activate Miamians throughout the county to inform the mayor’s policies, initiatives and strategies centered on an equitable recovery and a thriving community.

Thrive305 includes:

  • Countywide Resident Survey – the widest-reaching survey in the history of Miami-Dade, designed to be non-partisan, issue-oriented, and solicit input from all county residents.
  • Civic Weekends – “Town Hall”-style virtual events to provide residents opportunities to learn about county government, discuss the survey findings and recommend ideas for the Action Plan.
  • Action Plan Workshops – smaller events that allow community leaders and policy experts to collaborate with county staff on recommendations for the Action Plan.

Career Mentoring Survey for High School Students *
During Career and Technical Education Month (February), please be aware of an opportunity for students to participate in career mentoring and earn volunteer hours through The Mentoring Hour, a virtual career mentoring program for high school students. First, the Youth Career Institute needs input from high school students to ensure that this community program meets their diverse needs. Please share this brief survey with high school students. Deadline to submit is February 26.

NAMI Miami Presents Aging & Mental Health: Impact of COVID Pandemic *
Join NAMI Miami-Dade and leading expert, Philip D. Harvey, PhD, to learn how mental health conditions and aging affects cognition, as well as the impact of the Covid pandemic. Dr. Harvey is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Mill School of Medicine and the Director of the Division of Psychology. Through May 15, Floridians can enroll in Florida KidCare for comprehensive, affordable health insurance with the assistance of a Covering Florida Navigator, by scheduling a confidential and unbiased appointment for free.

Florida KidCare is the umbrella brand for the four government-sponsored health insurance programs – Medicaid, MediKids, Florida Healthy Kids and the Children’s Medical Services (CMS) Health Plan – that together provide a seamless continuum of coverage for Florida children from birth through the end of age 18. Benefits include doctor visits, surgeries, check-ups, immunizations, vison and hearing benefits, prescription medication, dental care, emergency care, hospital stays, and mental health services.

Parent to Parent of Miami Learning Opportunity
Join Jeanette Cordova, Outreach Coordinator, as she updates school representatives, service agencies and community members on the mission, services and enrichment project at Parent to Parent of Miami. Positive Parenting Program at Federation of Families
The Triple P Parenting Program is for parents with children who have mild to moderate behavioral issues and are under the age of 12 years old. The Program consists of 10 free, 1 hour, parenting sessions with a Triple P Parent Educator from Federation of Families. Parents will learn and practice the skills necessary to tackle behavioral challenges with various strategies implemented from the evidence based Triple P curriculum. We provide the sessions in English or Spanish, in home or virtual.
