14-Day Writing Challenge
The National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) offers The 14-Day Writing Challenge as a great format to encourage you to write during this busy quarter.
This is an opportunity for you to experiment with daily writing, online community, and supportive accountability. It's very simple:
1. You commit to write every day for at least 30 minutes.
2. At the beginning of your writing time, you login to our online community, start the timer, complete your writing, and post your progress at the end.
3. You take 5 minutes to support other writers in your group by commenting on their progress.
The dates are October 28th to November 10th. You can register for the 14-Day Writing Challenge on the
NCFDD website
for free with your DU email. If you choose to participate and write 12 out of 14 days, send Karen Swanson at
karen.swanson@du.edu
your completion email and you will be entered into a drawing for a Starbucks gift card. We're looking forward to working together!

Heart of Higher Education

The Heart of Higher Education is an opportunity to gather as a DU community to share the challenges and opportunities of transcending the institutional, professional and personal choices that tend to separate core identity/integrity from day to day actions. The meetings are open to all faculty (of any rank) and staff (of any title). The conversations are hosted by the Office of Teaching and Learning and facilitated by OTL Faculty Teaching Fellow, Professor Paul Michalec from the Morgridge College of Education.

Prior to each meeting an agenda and brief reflective reading is sent out.
Bring your lunch. Come late or leave early. This is an invitation for self-care - no guilt necessary.

Turnitin Adoption
As of fall quarter 2019, the university uses Turnitin as the plagiarism checking software in Canvas. You may remember that we had used Turnitin before moving to our most recent software, Vericite. Last year, Turnitin acquired Vericite, which resulted in a search for a new plagiarism checking software. After researching other options and critically reviewing the features available, Turnitin was chosen as the most optimal solution. The setup will be very similar to the way Vericite currently functions in Canvas.
Anyone who includes wording in their syllabus about Vericite should update it in preparation for future quarters. Suggested wording and more information can be found on our OTL Blog:

Monday, October 14

Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science Building, Room 510
As you may know, the university will seek reaffirmation of its accreditation status by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in 2019-2020. In preparation for our campus visit on October 19-20, 2020, we are working with faculty and staff from across campus on various elements of our reaffirmation process.
Vice Provost Karas will be hosting an Accreditation Café style event, and we invite the DU community to engage in this conversation. As a participant, you will rotate through three 20-minute discussions to share your thoughts about topics such as, “How do we engage students more deeply in their own learning?” and “How do we know we’re doing a good job?”
We believe this is a great opportunity to engage faculty and staff with HLC, a critical touchpoint for DU to continue thriving and growing. Beverages, snacks, and lively dialogue will be provided. We hope to see you there!

Join us for an informal open lab where ePortfolio adopters will be provided with tutorials for leveraging tools within the DU Portfolio application to enhance reflective practices, and an opportunity to work through implementation and design challenges (when using any ePortfolio application) with colleagues, peers, and experts.

This session covers foundational theoretical frameworks to understand how bias presents as microaggression and how this hinders cognitive engagement in learning environments. Participants will learn research-based strategies for recognizing, assessing, and responding to microaggressions in real-time. Space is limited.

In this workshop we will explore a teaching/learning method called CRISPA, which is an acronym that stands for Connection, Risk-taking, Imagination, Sensory Experience, Perceptivity, and Active Engagement.
|
|
Through these elements, instructors are encouraged to explore their craft in thoughtful, engaging ways that enliven the classroom experience. These six elements should be thought of as an artist's palette, where instructors pull from each element when appropriate to create engaged learning experiences.
