National Night Out 2018
Tuesday, August 7
Neighborhood parties begin at 6 p.m.
Austin Landing celebration 6 - 11 p.m.
National Night Out is just days away! Miami Township throws one of the biggest and best celebrations in the country. Our event ranked fourth in the nation in 2017 among communities of similar size. While our residents know how to throw a block party and Austin Landing knows how to fire up a crowd, it is the building of a solid partnership between officers and neighbors that is most important. Our officers make their way to as many parties as possible and our residents love it!
Testimonials -
"
"We back our blue! It means so much to get to know your neighbors and police, so if there is a problem, they are there to help..."
-Shirley Mullins, Penbrooke

"We have a friendship with the officers. They tell us what we should be watching for..."
- Sheri Shaner, Villages of Miami

"Officers have interest in the neighborhood. It's reassuring to know there is someone nearby... "
-Jennifer Schmidt, Vienna Parkway
There is still time to register to donate blood during the community celebration at Austin Landing. The Community Blood Center's Bloodmobile will be there from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Police & fire levies head to ballot November 6
Miami Township is planning to put two renewal levies before voters in the General Election on November 6.

The police department is asking for renewal of a 5.25 mill levy that will help maintain vehicles, communication and general department operations, all in a continuing effort to offer our citizens the best service and security. It will not involve an increase to your taxes.
The trustees are also asking voters to renew a 3.50 mill fire/EMS levy that will help maintain fire apparatus, rescue equipment and other necessary operations of the Miami Valley Fire District. This levy, too, does not involve a tax increase.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously at its July 10 meeting to approve moving forward with the levies and submitting them to the Montgomery County Board of Elections for final approval as required by law.
Buy salt now, save big money later
Miami Township is stockpiling rock salt now to save money later. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously in July to approve $45,000 in additional funding for rock salt through an amended appropriation of the Permissive Motor Vehicle Tax Fund. The early purchase comes after a recent contract bid nearly doubled the price per ton from $47.18 that we currently pay to $89.95 per ton this fall.

“It made sense to buy as much as we could under the old contract, so we basically filled the barn, bought it early, and bought it at a price that is considerably less than we could have,” Trustee President John Morris said.

The Road Department has now purchased 800 tons of rock salt and piled it to the rafters at the township salt barn on Wood Road. The Montgomery County Engineer’s Department assisted by providing equipment and manpower. Public Works Director Dan Mayberry says a mild winter should keep the township’s supply plentiful, but if we do see a lot of snow and ice, a contingency plan is in place to share resources with the county and other municipalities should it become necessary.
Construction underway at Dayton Christian School
Expect to see a lot of construction at Dayton Christian School at the corner of Washington Church Road and Spring Valley Pike.

The Board of Trustees voted July 10 to approve the school's final development plan to build a 28,750 square foot new gymnasium addition at the center of campus that the school calls The Warrior Center.

Traffic patterns and parking on campus will remain the same, but you will see new landscaping.
Police sponsor active shooter training
Miami Township and the ALICE Training Institute are teaming up for a two-day Training Instructor Certification Course, Sept. 20-21, 2018, to be held at Moraine Heights Baptist Church, 5661 Munger Rd.

The course is designed to teach proactive survival strategies for violent intruder or active shooter incidents. The goal is to provide people with survival-enhancing options during a violent situation before law enforcement arrives. Participants will be ALICE-certified to share their new skills with others.

ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) is a useful strategy for law enforcement, schools, universities, hospitals, businesses and places of worship.

Runway Fest
August 10, 6 - 10 p.m.
Contributed by Dayton Int'l Airport Staff:

The Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport is once again inviting the community to its annual open house for a family-friendly festival, Runway Fest, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, August 10.

“Summer just wouldn’t be complete without the Runway Fest at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport,” said Terry Slaybaugh, director of aviation for the city of Dayton. “Dayton residents and visitors gather from the entire region to celebrate aviation and enjoy this annual event.”

Runway Fest is an evening that the whole family can enjoy, including a live musical performance from Funky G and the Groove Machine; inflatables for the kids, multiple aircraft displays and a variety of food vendors. The young – and young at heart – can visit the bounce house, have their faces painted, and take to the sky with airplane rides all while enjoying the atmosphere of a fun, family-friendly evening. Festivities will end with a dazzling display when Rozzi Fireworks lights up the night sky at 9:30 p.m.

Visitors may bring lawn chairs or blankets. No coolers, pets, alcoholic beverages, or outside food or beverages are allowed. Parking is available at the airport at 11160 N. Springboro Pike. Please park at the airport. For safety reasons, we suggest that guests do not attempt to park off-site and walk across this extremely busy intersection.

Drivers need to be extra cautious during the school year as many children will be walking to school or getting on and off a stopped school bus. According to the National Safety Council , drivers should heed the following:

  • Don't block crosswalks
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and take extra care in school zones
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
  • Never pass a bus loading or unloading children; it's the law!
  • The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus
  • Teach children the proper way to get on and off the bus
  • Line up 6 feet away from the curb as the bus approaches
