COMING SOON: RESILIENT PV CALCULATOR
Sustainable CUNY's Smart DG Hub has been working with several partners to develop a Resilien t PV Calculator as part of a U.S. Department of Energy program. The tool, which is now in its final phase of development, will provide NYSolar Map users with the ability to generate an "entry-level" energy storage feasibility analysis. This analysis would indicate if energy storage is practicable at a desired site and warrants an in-depth look.

Inputs will be a simple list of site loads and characteristics that are pre-populated with default values based on common properties. The user can select critical equipment from a drop-down list, while the Solar Map will provide PV system size estimates.
JUNE POLL RESULTS, JULY QUESTION
The June Newsletter poll asked the question: "How do you get customers to care about customer-sited energy storage systems?" Respondents favored "Create Incentives" over "Conduct a Large Scale Educational Campaign" by a 54% to 36% margin. Does this suggest that a two-pronged approach is needed? The July poll asks the question: "How do we increase the adoption of Community Shared Solar (CSS) ?" To see the solutions proposed by participants at the NY Solar+Storage Summit and vote for your favorite, go to https://www.sli.do/ . You don't have to sign up -- just scroll down and enter the room code : ESSVote. The poll will remain open until August 20th, and the results will be published in the August Newsletter .
ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS HELP EASE PEAK DEMAND
July's heat waves -- and the stress they placed on the power grid -- are another reminder of the need to move quickly in expanding energy storage throughout New York State. Energy storage systems (ESS) can help meet the peak demands of hot summer days by discharging electricity that is generated and stored when demand is much lower. Governor Cuomo recently set a statewide target of 1,500 MW of energy storage by 2025, and is expected to reveal an even more ambitious goal for 2030 before the end of this year. One big step in that direction is the announcement earlier this month of a 20 MW system to be installed at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County. According to the   Albany Business Journal , the $9 million storage facility will be the largest of it kind in the state. Sustainable CUNY's Smart DG Hub has been working hard to streamline the process for installing ESS systems.
COMMENTS SOUGHT FOR NEW YORK ENERGY STORAGE ROADMAP
In support of Governor Cuomo's target of installing 1,500 MW of energy storage by 2025, NYSERDA and the Department of Public Service (DPS) collaborated with stakeholders to develop the New York State Energy Storage Roadmap. Three technical conferences will be held throughout the State (July 31 in New York City, August 7 on Long Island and August 21 in Albany) to allow for public feedback on recommendations and approaches identified in the roadmap.
COMMUNITY SHARED SOLAR GOES MAINSTREAM (MEDIA)
Mainstream media is catching up to the growing awareness of solar opportunities for those who don't 'own a sunny roof' but want to invest in solar. The   New York Times recently featured Community Shared Solar in their Sunday Real Estate section. You don't have to wait to read the last line to find out about the community shared solar opportunities in NYC. You can go right to the   Shared Solar NYC Gateway supported by Sustainable CUNY as lead for the NYC Solar Partnership.
ACCESSOLAR SEEKS TO MATCH DEVELOPERS WITH COMMUNITIES
L-R) Sustainable CUNY Solar Ombudsman Emily Sweeney chats with Daphany Rose Sanchez of Kinetic Communities Consulting, Keith Leonard Kinch of BlocPower and Cynthia Herrera of WE ACT for Environmental Justice at an ACCESSolar Meet & Greet event held in Brooklyn on July 18

The event, hosted by Sustainable CUNY and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), attracted more than 30 representatives of solar developers and community organizations. The aim was to match developers with community groups interested in teaming up for Community Shared Solar (CSS) projects under NYCHA's ACCESSolar program. Teams must submit applications by August 3rd.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Silence is often taken as complacency, but it may simply mean that there is an assumption that ' someone else' will step up, which in turn can lead to unintended and uninformed market or policy changes. Back in 2011 Sustainable CUNY convinced officials from 16 jurisdictions (see below) representing half the population of New York to step up, roll up their sleeves and work with us (and they all had busy day jobs), to remove barriers to wide-scale solar adoption. It worked. Significant barriers were removed, a streamlined permit was created and the growth of solar and solar jobs was, and is for now, exponential in New York. With the advent of Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), the demand for community solar and the need for energy storage systems, now is not the time for complacency. Sustainable CUNY is continuing to work with partners, but if you are asked to vote on a poll: Vote. If you are asked to participate in a meeting or weigh in on a roadmap: show up and speak up. The market is yours to create, if you are willing to step up.

NYSolar Smart is a strategic effort led by Sustainable CUNY of the City University of New York that supports Federal, State and NYC solar initiatives to strategically remove barriers to large scale solar deployment.
