"Binding Each to All"
Some communities and traditions we are born into; others we choose to join, and sometimes even help to lead. What does it mean to "belong" to a congregation? Some reflections on the ways life has of calling us into becoming the persons we are meant to be.

"Widening the Circle"
Cultures define what is normal and what is not - whose voices dominate, what ideas are more important than others. And, it is possible to expand the edges of the circles we live within to include ideas and values that are right nearby but too often unseen. This morning we will highlight the Society's connection with Vermont Interfaith Action, and reflect on how partnerships help to grow this congregation's circle.

"Dissonant Histories"
Origin stories about how "America" came to be have enormous impact on culture, norms, and even laws that define who belongs here. But different peoples have different stories, and it's past time for us to hold a larger truth. Honoring Indigenous Peoples Day.

Exploring Paganism Chalice Circle
Members of the Exploring Paganism Chalice Circle gather  to listen, to learn, to share, and to grow in our own ways and together as we explore the many paths of Paganism and Earth-centered spirituality.  We meet on the second Sunday of each month at the UU Meeting House from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

Our previous discussion topics have included the Wheel of the Year, Making Magic, Magical Ethics, and Brigid - Goddess and Saint, among others. We have also shared some practical magical techniques and even had a Magical Show and Tell.

Our first meeting this year is October 13, 12-1:30 p.m. at the Meeting House.

Theme Circles Registration
Rodney Lowe

Registration is presently underway for our next season of Theme Circles! Groups will begin meeting at specific times during the third week of October, November, December, and January to explore the themes of Belonging, Attention, Awe and Integrity.

Theme Circles consist of about eight to ten members who meet with a trained facilitator at specific times each month to discuss, reflect, and explore the monthly spiritual theme. Participation in a Theme Circle is a wonderful way to make new friends, connect with old friends, and foster meaningful connections in our large congregation. After receiving and studying the monthly edition of The Path , participants choose a question or two to incorporate into their daily lives and then ultimately share that experience (or other thoughts or inspirations) when the group meets. Be aware that when you join a Theme Circle, you should make every effort to attend all meetings, although members will certainly understand your absence when you are out of town.

Sign-ups will extend online at this link through October 14. Or sign up after the service on October 13. Each registrant will be asked to list first, second and third choice of group times. The sooner you sign up, the more likely you will get your first choice. You'll learn your Theme Circle group assignments soon after.

If you have questions, email me at [email protected].

We look forward to another fabulous season of Theme Circles!

Hold the Date - Usher and Welcome Ambassador Training - November 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Once a year we run a training for Ushers and Welcome Ambassadors so even if you have been in the past, it is always helpful to be reminded of the ways that we are welcoming to all. If you have signed up to be an Usher or Welcome Ambassador you will receive an email invitation. If you are interested in either of these two volunteer roles come and find out what it entails.

A JUMP Story
Beth Dreibelbis, Ascension Lutheran, JUMP vice president

Every week I come into JUMP to add new books and arrange the book cart. Many weeks, for a long time, a woman who struggles to walk came with a rolling suitcase.  She would return some books (even though they don't need to be returned) and carefully go through each shelf, looking at each book for a long time, and choosing books to go into her suitcase.

Now the usual thing is to take 2-3 books per child in your family. This woman was piling up 20 or more books. I didn't want to discourage her but that's a lot of books each week!  I asked what age child she was looking for and she told me her story:

As a child she was kept in an orphanage in Burlington. She was not treated well or kindly and could not seem to learn to read - and was punished for that. She ran away as a teen, married, and had children. When her son was in school, he was diagnosed with dyslexia and was taught to read. He would come home and teach his mother to read, too. Turns out she is also dyslexic. Later he taught her math, also.

Now, she is helping raise his children. After school each day, a group of neighborhood kids comes to their house and has a "reading circle." The children read to her, and to each other. They continue practicing their reading skills each day and she provides snacks and a safe place to learn.

So, let's think about this - a sad, lonely, mistreated little dyslexic girl grows up to help others avoid the same difficulties and in turn those children will grow up to be successful in life. Who knew the JUMP books help this cycle continue.

When we give to others, even used books, you never know how many lives you will touch.
