For the longest time, physicians and patients expected ‘the latest and greatest’ and hospitals provided, irrespective of cost. The business of medicine was well back then, and payers were able to afford it. In today’s world, payers, patients, and physicians alike are becoming increasingly aware of the cost of care, and hospitals as well as physicians are being watched for how much they spend and how they spend it. This development, made the need for closer alignment between the hospital and physicians crucial in this era of accountable care.
Administrators and physicians are completely different species, though.
