Picnic lain fallow this year
Thanks to members, volunteers and staff, our Ashby Village programs are thriving. With the increased demand to continue providing all of you with high quality service and programs and with a transition of core staff, we find that we do not have the capacity to produce a fall picnic this year. But don't fret! The picnic will be back next year. We look forward to planning it with you and creating an even more robust picnic.

ElderAction participation noted in Berkeleyside
On June 30, more than 1,000 people showed up at Berkeley's MLK Jr. Civic Center Park to protest federal immigration policies at the
Keep Families Together demonstration. Among them were some members of the Ashby Village interest group
ElderAction. AV Member and ElderAction co-convener Marcia Freedman said of the gathering, "I'm grateful I was able to share with other members of the Ashby Village community my profound sense of outrage and sorrow about the Administration's policy of separating parents and migrant children, including babies and toddlers. This was our first action as part of ElderAction, a new interest group within the Village." Berkeleyside journalists noticed the ElderAction contingent and featured a quote from Marcia in their article.

Members in these areas, lacking a group of their own, have been attending other group functions. Mary Graham and Deirdre Anderson, both Kensington residents, would like to revive and enlarge the Kaleidoscope group. A new name, Northtowns, has been proposed. Former activities and new ones are being researched. An invitation to a dinner discussion of goals and possibilities that represent the group's constituency and interests is forthcoming.

Yet, rarely do we stop and think about the working conditions of those who prepare and serve our food. Saru Jayaraman explained, in a breathtaking talk, why we should.
