Informational Picket outside Viterra's Head Office this Friday at noon

Viterra has locked out 51 of its workers represented by CUPE Local 5317 at the Port of Montreal since January 30th. The CUPE members were negotiating for the same working conditions as the vast majority of Port of Montreal workers.

CUPE Saskatchewan will host a demonstration and information picket in solidarity with CUPE Local 5317 members at the Viterra Corporate Head Office in Regina over the noon hour on June 8, 2018.

GSU members should feel free to come and go from their workplace as usual, but the attendance and support of fellow union members is appreciated.

GSU Bargaining Survey

GSU Locals 1, 2 and 14 are beginning to prepare for Agreement Renewal Bargaining this Fall. On May 28, 2018 a survey was emailed out to all members of those Locals to ask important questions about priorities at work and areas that need improving.

Membership surveys are one of the tools we rely on to stay in touch with GSU members.

We have received many completed surveys and appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey if you haven't already. It should take about five minutes and your responses are voluntary and will remain confidential. Responses will be compiled and analyzed as a group.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your staff representative or the GSU office in Regina at 1.866.522.6686 or [email protected].

Why all employees should use their vacation days

You'd think it would be unnecessary to explain the value of taking a vacation. Who among us doesn't dream about long weekends, taking off two sun-filled weeks in the summer, or indulging in a few days of staying in and cozying up for Christmas? You would think it's pretty clear that a break from our routines, demands and the stresses of work life shouldn't have to be mandated. But you'd be wrong.

Canadian workers aren't quite as vacation-resistant as our Japanese colleagues. In case you're unaware, Japan's work ethic is so historically extreme they've developed a word - karoshi - for death by too much work.

We're not quite that dramatic here in North America but we do operate under a work ethos that sees many of us live to work, rather than work to live, the way our European colleagues do. Canada scores low on rankings for the number of mandated vacation days per year, with just 10. Compare that with countries near the top of the list such as the UK (28), Sweden, Norway, Denmark and France (all 25).
