Welcome to NWIL District

Michael Downs, Lead Pastor
Bridgeway

In ministry for nearly thirty years, Pastor Michael's passion is to preach the Word of God while creating avenues that prompt and encourage the body of Christ to actively walk out their faith in Jesus as disciples in every area of life. He desires to know people's stories, see lives transformed, and help people find their place and purposes in God's bigger picture.

Pastor Michael loves hiking, canoeing, ping pong, and spending time with family and friends. Originally from the Midwest, he's a fan of Kansas University basketball, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas City Chiefs.

His favorite passages are John 10:10, Proverbs 3:5-6, Romans 8:1-2, Romans 12, and 2 Corinthians 5:11-21.

Gabe Wickstrum, Executive & Worship Ministries Pastor
Bridgeway
Gabe shares: "Psalm 30:11-12 says, 'You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken aw ay my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!'

"God has truly redeemed me and I can't help but shout His praises. I hope to help others see what God has done, is doing, and what He will do in our lives, and give Him praise!"

Gabe graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University with a degree in Business Administration and served as a staff worship leader of a church plant for fourteen years. Then, in 2017, God called Him to pursue ordination. Gabe is currently taking courses toward that call. Throughout his journey, Gabe has witnessed all around him God's faithfulness in loving people, redeeming, and empowering-and Gabe desires to continue to be a part of that work.

Gabe is married to Jen and they have three kids: Silas, Emery, and Elijah. Gabe enjoys encountering God through nature and loves hiking, sunsets on the river, fires at the beach, and grilling for family and friends.

NYI - Harvest Party
September 28, I had the pleasure of coordinating our annual fall harvest party for the district. We had 152 attend the event and the weather held off to make it a great success. I am so appreciative of all the people who pitched in to help this event run smoothly and all those who helped set up and tear down. Students had a great time hanging with their friends and participating in all the different activities. This year we had two giant inflatables, archery tag, 9-square, bags, spikeball, and cross net. We also had the added option of cotton candy and sno
cones to go along with the food, drinks and s'mores. This is a great connecting event for our students and churches on the district in between events like camp and celebrate life. There is so much value in having all our teens gather together to have fun and worship together.  Linsy Stockham brought a fantastic message along with Olivet's band City On A Hill leading the group in worship. Overall, the event was a great success and I am thankful for all the churches that attended this year.  Josh Parker, PFN Youth Pastor

NMI - Nazarene Missions International

We are people united in our belief that our involvement changes lives worldwide.
Carole Eatock
District NMI President
We are Vision.
We are Action.
We are Impact.

NMI - God is Calling! NWIL is Sending!
Adding clarification, our denomination has defined a Nazarene Missionary is either a sponsored missionary or global missionary. A sponsored missionary will serve up to four years in a localized need in the field, funded by a local community and affirmed by the local church, district and the Church of the Nazarene. A global missionary is one called to a lifetime of service and funded by World Evangelism Fund (WEF). Affirmed by the Church of the Nazarene with prior ministry experience the missionary will serve in a global assignment needed.

As missionary president God has placed a burden on my heart for NWIL to send 3000 individuals onto the mission field. Well I am excited to share with you God is speaking to individuals across our district AND they are being obedient! Over the next few months I will be sharing testimonies of individuals who are hearing God calling to missionary service!

Mission Experience: 7 mission trips

The summer of 2018 was the first time I had ever felt God truly telling me to go into missions. Throughout my life, leading up to that summer, I have heard and read amazing stories of individuals leaving all that they had to pursue a life of missions in a third world country. While these stories were moving and captivating, I never had truly felt God calling me to follow that sort of path. However, it wasn't until my final Teen Camp two summers ago, that I finally had the call into missions.

During the last evening sermon, I was sketching in my journal, when mindlessly I wrote the word Missions. After realizing what I had written, everything became clear. I began writing about how God had laid on my heart the verse Mathew 9:37, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few," in Denver Colorado on a Youthworks Trip, (a mission trip led by a non-profit organization that leads trips throughout the United States for Youth), a few weeks before Teen Camp. With clear eyes and a path laid before me, I followed my call into missions by applying for a job at Youthworks, this application then led to a job interview, and finally a position as Kids Club Coordinator located in Taylorsville, NC. There, I led youth groups through a week long mission trip in the community I grew to love so much over the summer.

While I'm not sure exactly where my next missions project is, I know that God is not finished with me. I plan to continue to follow his path for me into missions, no matter the destination. He's got me and I'm ready to do his work. -  Leah Mason

I am excited to be a part of a denomination who encourages and supports individuals feeling a call to missions. I would like to challenge you to be in prayer for Marissa Smith, Leah Mason and other individuals across our district hearing God calling into a life of service!   - Carole Eatock

Calling our generation to a dynamic life in Christ
NYI - Young Adult Ministry
How many times have you heard, "where does the time go?" Maybe you are like me and you seem to be saying it more and more as I watch nervously, excited seventh graders move up into the youth department and watch newly graduated High Schoolers try to figure out where they fit.

In the book The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Churchby Jossey-Bass "90% of youth active in high school church programs drop out of church by the time they are sophomores in college." In a 2006 Barna study their findings were similar saying that "a majority of twenty-somethings-61% of today's young adults-had been churched at one point during their teen years but they are now spiritually disengaged."

Allies we are not okay with those statistics and we don't think you are as well, so what are we going to do about it. Robert Wuthnow writes that "unless religious leaders take younger adults more seriously, the future of American religion is in doubt. The proportion of young adults identifying with mainline churches, is about half the size it was a generation ago."

We have a fantastic university (ONU) that not only takes care of our college students educational needs but offers numerous avenues for them to grow spiritually, but what about our students who do not go to Olivet or any college for that matter.

Young Adult Allies, NYI sees all of you and has heard you and we want to do everything we can to keep you connected. Not just connected to us, but more importantly to God. In order to do that we need your help. If you are a recent high school graduate, 18-23 years old, or you know someone in your church that fits into that age group, please send your information to us.

We want to help you get connected to a group that will help you and challenge you to continue growing in your faith whether you are attending school far from your NWIL district family or you are working within a NWIL community.

We, your NWIL family, love you and want you to know you matter and you are needed to accomplish the goal God has set before us. So if you are a college aged student or a church leader/pastor would you please give Ronda Hollars a call or send an email with young adults (18-23)name(s) and contact information so that we can begin connecting them with resources to help them continue maturing in their faith with a body of believers surrounding them.

SDMI - Sunday School Discipleship International

Ellyn Book
District SDMI Director
" Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."   Matthew 28:19-20

As you are going,
THINK BIG: Every relationship, every interaction, all inclusive.

And make disciples,
START SMALL: You. Be one. Be a Christ-like disciple. Re-present Jesus.

Baptizing them, immersing them in Jesus,
GO DEEP: Pray. Empty yourself. Sacrifice.
SDMI
Children - The Center of God's Kingdom

Over the past four years, our district has been learning about biblical discipleship. We have discovered it is relational, not about curriculum. It is intentional, it doesn't just happen. It isn't a one-time thing, it's a lifestyle. It isn't about adding disciples, it's about multiplying disciples. And all fully devoted followers of Jesus are commanded to make disciples, who make disciples, who make disciples.

But what about our kids? Now that we as adults understand how Jesus made disciples, and how He expects and has empowered us to make disciples, SDMI is focused on helping our children do the same. Yes, help them learn to be discipled by Jesus, to be discipled by a more mature follower of Jesus, and yes, to learn to disciple others! As our manual states: children are disciples in training, not disciples in waiting.

We have recently formed our district's children's ministry council. Their main purpose is to identify needs and support every local church to ensure holistic and transformational ministry to children and their families will be a priority, as evidenced by:
  • providing effective and empowering ministries to the whole child-physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually;
  • articulating Christian positions on current social justice issues that affect children;
  • connecting children to the heart of the mission and ministry of the faith community;
  • discipling children and training them to disciple others;
  • equipping parents to nurture the spiritual formation of their children.
The Church of the Nazarene envisions an intergenerational faith community where children and youth are loved and valued, where they are ministered to and incorporated into the Church family through a wide variety of means and methods, and where they have opportunities to minister to others in ways consistent with their ages, development, abilities, and spiritual gifts.

Please be in prayer for our children's council as they work to provide support to our church families to create these opportunities.

SAVE THE DATE!
Saturday, January 11, 2020
9:00 - Noon
Peoria First Nazarene

The SDMI focus for 2020 is CHILDREN. To start the new year, we will be hosting a workshop for parents, grandparents, Sunday school teachers, pastors - anyone who is in relationships with children.

We pray our kids would long for Jesus and be rooted and growing with Him, even in their elementary school years. We want to equip our teens well for the challenges and roles they have ahead of them in life. We wish we could see our relationships and connections with our kids deepening.

But where do we even start? The answer is Jesus! (It's always Jesus!)

Where did He start? He started with the heart.  God brings lasting change and life transformation in us and our children from the inside out.

This workshop, sponsored by SDMI and presented by Greg Maston, is designed to help you gain the right motivations for carrying out God's purpose for you, a deeper confidence in Christ in your disciple-making, a stronger handle on what you are specifically aiming for with your kids, and practical heart-discipling skills that you'll be equipped and practice using that very day.

SO, Save the Date! Get it on your church calendar and personal calendar now! More details and registration information will be coming.

South Side Community (SCC)
Southside Community Center * MOMs & Methodist
Rev. Irene Lewis-Wimbley
Southside Community Center (SCC) was excited to offer a M.O.M.S. morning out event to the moms of the 61605 Zip code.  SCC partnered with Methodist School of Nursing and Living Alternatives Pregnancy Resource Center. The Methodist students were able to perform ASQ (ages, stages, and questions) test on the moms children as part of their pediatrics rotation while the moms were able to create vision boards and enjoy a time of fellowship. Living Alternatives was able to bring their mobile unit to our building on the last day of the event and offer pregnancy test and sonograms to the moms at the event.  At SCC our M.O.M.S. group (moms offering moms support) meets every Monday to go over life skills, biblical enrichment, and various other subjects. We have loved seeing God at work in the last few months and cant wait to see what he is going to do in the future.
Summit

On September 22nd just six months after their soft launch, Summit Nazarene gathered with their PFN & SCC family to officially LAUNCH and install full time pastor, Gretta Nash. It was a day filled with the Holy Spirit and such a pivotal time in the life of PFN and Summit. Hundreds gathered as we praised God for all that He has done and all that He is going to do in the life of Summit Nazarene. We are so grateful for our past and the incredible foundation that those who came before us laid. We are ready for what God is calling us to do right here in the Sunnyland, Washington, East Peoria, and surrounding areas. We are EXCITED about our future and where God is leading us and what He has in store for us in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. We are able to jump in the community with both feet with the backing and support of PFN. We are already making a difference right here in the Sunnyland community and can't wait to see what God has in store for us. We have already decided as a congregation that whatever God asks of us, our answer is Yes, Lord YES!!!!
Footprints in the Park
The Macomb Church of the Nazarene has begun implementation of a plan that was initially conceived during time at DCPI training in June of 2018.  Sunday, September 15, 2019 we hosted our first "Footprints in the Park" (Church in the park but not like we traditionally think of church). Patton Park is within a mile of our church building.  It is adjacent to one trailer park with another trailer park being across the street from the Park and an apartment complex nearby.  We distributed 146 gift bags containing handcrafted invitations, a note with more details, and a small treat to our Patton Park area neighbors. There were between 50 and 60 in attendance with only 20 of those being from the current church. Hy-Vee Catering grilled the hotdogs and we shared a light early evening meal together as neighbors.  Gospel seeds were planted using the Footprints theme to share the love of Jesus.

Footprints in the Park was a trial run of meeting together in a place that is more comfortable to the neighborhood individuals and a style of church that invites them into relationship and introduces them to the love of Christ right where they are.  Our hope is to meet regularly through the spring/summer months in Patton Park initially and then possibly move to a more weather proof location possibly at the current church.

OLIVET ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dr. Scott Sherwood '92 elected for a three-year term.

At the annual Olivet Nazarene University Board of Trustees meeting, held on campus October 1-2, 2019, University President, Dr. John C. Bowling formally discussed his plans to retire in May 2021 and a Presidential Succession Plan was approved.

This plan set forth several key items for consideration for the Board of Trustees as they begin the process of preparing for the election of a new president of the University. The plan included a timeline for the search and election process. In order to ensure continuity in the Board throughout the election process, the Board also voted to elect its officers (chairman, vice-chairman and secretary) and members of the executive committee for a period of three years, rather than a one-year term.

Dr. Scott Sherwood '92 M.A.T., district superintendent of the Northwestern Illinois District of the Church of the Nazarene, was elected as chairman of the Board. He will replace Dr. David Roland, who will be retiring from the Board at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year.

Scott and his wife, Sherry (Fortado) '91, are the parents of Elizabeth 'Libby' Sherwood '19, junior Madeira Sherwood and freshman Brooke Sherwood. They live in Pekin, Illinois.

Church Multiplication Endowment Fund
Give a GIFT that doesn't stop Giving!

Would you give $1.00 a month if it never stopped giving, never wore out, never changed its usefulness or purpose and transformed lives?

How many times do we give a gift to someone only to see it discarded at a later date or discover it was never used as intended? Have you ever wanted to give a gift that would never grow old or wear out, that would always be used for good and made a difference for eternity? NOW you can!

Jesus said "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Would you partner with your Northwestern Illinois District's vision to plant churches?  You might wonder how you can make a difference or even be a part. Everyone can. We need some to plant, we need everyone to pray and we need many to invest.

The Church Multiplication Endowment Fund is designed to reach unreached people living on the NWIL District for Christ. Every dollar given will continue to give in perpetuity. An endowment fund uses the interest from the principle to do kingdom work.  Will you help fund this goal?

Currently, our district property funds have been invested in planting 22 new churches these past three years and the district is in need of capital to continue to plant more! We need your help. Presently, there are 36 more potential church plants in various stages of planning which will require additional funding support.

Help us reach our GOAL of planting 300 churches by 2030.  We see 300 churches as 3,000 disciplemakers who disciple 15,000 disciples gathering with 30,000 worshippers.  Every dollar you give will continue to reach people for Christ your whole lifetime and beyond.

Would you consider a GIFT of $1.00 a month?  We are not trying to take money from your local ministry where you give your tithes and offerings. We are asking for many to give a little.  Our initial goal is 5,000 giving at least $1.00 a month. Would you be one of those 5,000 making a commitment to create a movement to plant churches that change lives?  Here are ways to give:

 1. You can give to your local church by marking your check or cash gift "NWIL CM Endowment" and your church treasurer will take it from there.

 2. You can also choose to give online if you want to set up one time or reoccurring payments using debit/credit/Electronic Check on the district website at nwilnaz.org/GIVE/ On District Church Planting or direct  CM Endowment Giving LINK. Or scan this QR code at the bottom of this article.

3. You can send a check or cash to NWIL District, 3520 Broadway St., Pekin, IL 61554 (please indicate CM Endowment on check memo)

We are also looking for those who might like to make greater kingdom investments!

You can give cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, livestock, grain, or other personal property.  Basically, any asset of marketable value can be used to help fund this endowment. There are also charitable gift annuity options that allow you to specify the endowment fund or another ministry of your choice while allowing you to receive income for your lifetime and when you pass, your gift goes to the endowment fund or specified ministry. CLICK HERE to see other ways to model generosity. Gifts can be given in memory or in honor of someone.

Large or small: Why not leave a lasting legacy that lasts more than your lifetime.
