HCM Research, the Ricky Fund
and Winn Feline Foundation
In 2009, Winn awarded a research grant to Dr. Philip Fox, The Animal Medical Center, New York City. The project was titled "Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): Five Year Outcomes and Risk Assessment".
Nine years later, this comprehensive project is one of the largest studies of feline heart disease ever completed. The purpose of this study was to determine the morbidity and survival of cats diagnosed with subclinical HCM when compared to apparently healthy cats. Medical records of 1730 cats from 50 veterinary hospitals in 21 countries were reviewed, collated and
analysed in the study.
The data gathered from the large number of cats studied in this project provides veterinary medicine substantial new knowledge about the many aspects of feline heart disease and cardiomyopathy. In the future, this study potentially will provide
information about the relationship of heart disease to other chronic conditions in cats (i.e. chronic kidney disease, cancer, and others).
