Open Runway Gives Opportunity for Local Fashion Designers to Show Off Their Stuff

The Steps in Downtown Crossing were turned into a fashion show on Thursday for Boston Fashion Week's Open Runway as models strutted wearing local clothiers' designs.

"I think Open Runway is really important so the Boston community can see the fashion talent right here within their city," said Terri Mahn, of the stylistcloset, a stylist and event producer, who was a panelist during the show. "It's important for designers to have support and for the public to see different versions of what they can buy and see in retail stores."

Many of the designers wore their own creations, and one even employed his mother to wear his garb. This was the first opportunity for many of the designers to have their work exhibited in public.

"I'm still in high school. I'm 17," said Sasa Murrett-Kam, above, who is a student in the fashion technology program at the Boston Arts Academy. She walked the runway in her own green lace floor length dress, which she described as "elegant, but still weird at the same time."

Murrett-Kan, like many participants heard, about Open Runway through a teacher, who knows  Jay Calderin, the founder and executive director of Boston Fashion Week, and the emcee the event.

"My favorite thing is the access. Many of the designers have access to the runway for the first time and some established designers participate, too," said Calderin. "And it's a lot of fun and play in Downtown Boston."

Open Runway was hosted by Platform Downtown with Boston Fashion Week and the Downtown Boston BID.
City Wants Proposals for New Master
Zoning Plan Study for  Downtown Boston

Downtown Boston has seen an incredible amount of commercial and residential development in recent years and more is on the horizon.

To help guide the future development the Boston Planning & Development Agency is requesting proposals for the upcoming Downtown Planning Study. Proposals are due by July 13th.

"This planning process is very important and exciting. It has been 30 years since we last studied the area and there have been many significant changes. We have new property owners, new retail, high tech and start-up companies, renovated theaters, expanded college campus presence and thousands of residents with hundreds of families raising children," said BID President & CEO Rosemarie Sansone. "In addition, this study will include all of the Financial District and the Greenway, which will provide a totally new way of looking at the area. With the addition of residents living and raising families Downtown, that too will provide a new frame for looking at this picture. It is exciting and I am pleased to see the BPDA has included many city agencies as part of the working group."

According to the BPDA, proposals are desired from consultants who have "demonstrated excellence in urban design and land use planning, historic preservation, engineering services to study environmental impacts, market and financial feasibility analysis, multi-modal transportation policy, and sustainability and climate resiliency." The duration of the resulting contract will not be longer than two years and the budget for the study is $600,000.

There's a New Steakhouse in Town!
Boston Chops Now Open on Temple Place

The new Boston Chops (52 Temple Place) is both classic steakhouse and contemporary cool. It's a powerhouse spot to host a business meeting, and also an Instagram-trending locale.
Boston Chops' owners
Brian Piccini, left, and Chris Coombs
.

"We felt we can bring the cool factor here and take an old space that just needed to be redone," said Brian Piccini, partner and president of Boston Urban Hospitality, to the Boston Business Journal.

Piccini estimates the renovation of the building cost $4 million, which was a bank in a former life (hence the lounge in the former bank vault). This is the second Boston Chops, and the new one dwarfs the first, as there is space for 500 people in the 10,000-square-foot space, which features three private dining rooms and three bars.

Piccini and co-owner Chris Coombs told the Boston Business Journal that "the restaurant is aimed at Downtown Crossing's bustling late-night scene that features a healthy mix of businesspeople, theater-goers and tourists."

One of the trendy features of the restaurant is the "Instagrammers table" of which Piccini plans to invite popular Instagrammers to take photos and push their food photos into the social media stratosphere.

Truly, the star of the new steakhouse is the food. The menu is expanded from the South End Boston Chops. The Downtown Crossing location will eventually serve lunch with menu items, including  a 20-ounce Chateaubriand, 18 oz. prime bone-in ribeye, oxtail croquettes, pork belly mac and cheese and "poutine-style" twice-baked loaded potato.

To start, Boston Chops DTX will be open for dinner only. Around mid-June the full lunch and dinner menus will be available and the restaurant will be open 11:30 am to 11:30 pm daily. Click here to check out menus and to make a reservation.
