The growth of the US Energy industry starts with the impressive uptick in upstream production - and this growth has sparked immediate incremental demand for refined products. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), gross imports to US Refineries have increased from 16.5 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2016, to a record-high 18.6 million b/d to start 2018. The majority of this growth is happening in the Gulf Coast, although 30 different States in the U.S. have refineries.
Water plays a key role in the refining process:
Refineries are among the biggest consumers of water on the planet, which is why most refineries are located near navigable waterways. The quality of incoming water can vary by storms or other man-made interactions, so it must be cleaned to remove organic impurities and to prevent micro-bio organisms from damaging the plant’s pumping infrastructure.
The majority of water used in refineries is for cooling. Water is also used for boiler feed applications and for various processing applications (plus some quantities must be on hand for fire protection). A variety of water treatment chemicals for disinfection and pH balancing are prevalent in refineries, and these chemicals are often dosed using hydraulically-balanced metering pumps.
A New Oil Economy Demands Modernized Water Treatment Equipment:
As global demand for refined products continues to increase, equipment suppliers’ capacity to meet this demand must also scale in proportion. New plants that are being built in the Gulf Coast, throughout Mexico, and in the Middle East require more efficient metering pumps that can handle the wide range of harsh chemicals needed, while also delivering the accuracy required, and the ability to operate reliably on a 24 x 7 x 365 basis. These types of pumps are in high demand, so lead times must be kept to a minimum, and API requirements must be met.
