Tisha B'Av - Displacement and Genocide
Saturday, July 21, 8:00pm

The 9th of the month of Av (Tisha B'Av) is a fast day which marks the gateway into the High Holy Day season as we recall the destruction of the Temple with mournful melodies and the devastating text of the Book of Lamentations.  Join us as we break open our hearts with music, poetry and silence, coming together to face what is broken, and beginning the process of transformation which is both the call of the season and the need of our time.

Please let our Music Director David know if you would like to contribute to the program.  You may bring a poem or a story, a piece of art or a song - of your own creation or ready made.  This year's theme is Displacement and Genocide.
Social Action Torah Study throughout July
Wednesdays, July 25 & August 1, 1:30pm

In Rabbi Katie's absence, our Social Action Fellow Ezra will be stepping in to lead Torah Study!  She will bring her specific insight and knowledge to guide us in an exploration of Torah as it connects to Social Justice themes. No need to RSVP, just show up ready to study!

38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival
July 19 - August 5

The program for the 38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival is now live! Or Shalom will be sponsoring two films in this year's lineup, A Perfect Day for Banana Leaves and Red Cow. You can get discounted tickets to either of these films with the code  ORSHALOM38

A Perfect Day for Banana Leaves
Bananas grown in the north of Israel reach their final
destination in Gaza. They journey south through the Israeli landscape and toward the Palestinians across the wall as we witness from both sides how the merchants trade and ultimately who profits and who loses in this fascinating business operation.
Listed under "Jews in Shorts: Documentaries" in schedule

Red Cow
In a settlement in East Jerusalem, 17-year-old Benny is an outsider because of her red hair and the fact that she is the only daughter of a radicalized Orthodox Jewish father whose wife died giving birth to her. Benny is a loner, choosing to indulge in poetry, pot, praying with tefillin and caring for the family's sacred red heifer. When beautiful newcomer Yael arrives in their small community, Benny smolders with a fire that she had not yet discovered.

Informational Meeting
Tuesday, August 7 @ 6:30pm

This will be a repeat of our first meeting for those who could not attend.

E xplore the complex layers of Israel and Palestine with your community on a trip that will be spiritual, thought-provoking, and inspirational.

On our first-ever Or Shalom trip to Israel and Palestine, we will:
  • Meet the People - Encounter Israelis and Palestinians from the many diverse communities of Israel and Palestine. Learn about the inspirational cultural and political work that often escapes our headlines across the ocean.
  • Explore the Land - From the contemporary landscape of borders, checkpoints and security fences to the ruins of ancient Israel, to the natural beauty of desert and water, there is no better way to understand or appreciate a place than to be there in person.
  • Learn and Reflect - Our tour will include time and space for learning, spiritual practice, discussion  and  relaxation.

Voter Registration Planning Meeting
Thursday, August 9 from 7 to 9 pm

Are you concerned about the health of our democracy?  Looking for ways to make an impact in November?  Make a difference with Or Shalom as we mobilize to  register  voters in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area for the November election.

Elul Study Series

3rd Friday Shabbat
Friday, August 17 at 7 pm

Following a Shabbat Service, learn about the recent trip to Vietnam taken by members Judy Olasov and Bonnie Willdorf as part of a Veterans for Peace delegation, focusing on the legacies of war, Agent Orange and unexploded ordnance, and visiting My Lai on the 50th anniversary of the massacre.
4th Friday Shabbat
Friday, August 24 at 7 pm

Following a Shabbat Service, listen to member and author Louise Schneider as she reads poetry from her new book, Baby Grand.  The poems in Baby Grand both mourn and praise, and weave these twin impulses into haunting beauty.

  • Highlight from the Spark! Calendar:
Jewish Identity, Race, and Justice with Ilana Kaufman
    Thursday, 7/19 6:30PM | Urban Adamah, Berkeley
In this class we will grapple at the intersection of Jewish identity, race and justice. What does it mean to be a Jew fighting for racial justice? How can we better educate ourselves and use the traditions of Judaism to inform the pursuit of justice? What contradictions arise at the crossroads of Jewish identity, race and justice? Together we will leverage various concepts, ideas and frameworks as we are guided by essential questions, and energized by what is certain to be robust conversation. Join us! Learn more here.
