Counselor's Corner
Dear Parents,
This month the "Life in the Middle" Counseling Newsletter focuses on mental health.  September is National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month-a time to share resources and stories in an effort to shed light on this stigmatized topic. We will use this month to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention.

As part of Carroll ISD's effort, CMS Counselors will be presenting Suicide Prevention Curriculum to CMS students during the weeks of September 9 - 20.  More information can be found here:   Suicide Prevention Curriculum

It is our desire to spread the word that everyone matters, is welcomed in our school and community, and that the "Future is Bright". We are partnering with other schools in Carroll ISD, as well as Tarrant County, and asking our students and staff to support mental health.  Suggested dress for each day that will signify support for Mental Well Being can be found here: The Future Is Bright: A Week of Suicide Prevention

Our campus will be addressing Suicide Prevention in a variety of ways the next few weeks. We know that many people find it difficult to talk about suicide. It can be very uncomfortable, and even scary. Add to that personal experiences (being touched in some way by suicide) and many of us can be way outside of our comfort zone.

We have tried to make our Suicide Prevention activities meaningful, with room for all of us to be involved, yet non-threatening. Below is what we have planned:

  1. Counselors will be going into 8th grade Science Classes and 7th Grade SS studies classes the next two weeks to present Signs of Suicide Curriculum. The curriculum includes a depression screening and teaches students signs of suicide,  and how to get help for someone who might be going through depression, or having suicidal thoughts.
  2. Counselors will follow up with students who indicate risk for depression from the screening.
  3. We will have a Dragon Den lesson on Mental Wellness/Stress
We all can play a part in preventing suicide by beginning the conversations, and building relationships. Please don't hesitate to reach out to one of us if you are struggling with this topic, or if you see a student struggling.  Here is an excellent article on  discussing Suicide in Schools .

We encourage all staff and students to participate next week Your Future Is Bright - A  Week of Suicide Prevention.
