A Letter from our Board Chair
|
|
|
|
|
To the Members of the Louisiana Legislature:
The Board of Regents
, charged with providing advice and recommendations to the Legislature, makes the recommendations below.
A vibrant higher education system is one of the key drivers of a prosperous state, but in Louisiana our colleges and universities are once again threatened with budget cuts that are both real and potentially devastating. It is not an overstatement to say Louisiana's continued ability to educate its citizenry and train its workforce depends on what happens in the upcoming special session of the Legislature. It is that critical.

LONI Hosts Annual Working Group Summit
Over two half-day sessions on April 26 and 27, LONI hosted 66 IT Security and Network practitioners at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. These practitioners represented a broad cross-section of LONI subscribers from higher education to state agencies.
The practitioners gathered together to recast the governance structure regarding the Network Security Working Group and Network Technical Advisory Group, both advisory groups to the LONI Management Council.
The LONI staff presented current and future strategies, updates on the 2018 sentiment survey, an update on all projects, and engaged in dialogue with the attendees on all the presented information.
At the end of each session, the respective attendees elected Mark Liggett (Tulane) and Mohamad Qayoom (LSUHSC-NO) as co-chairs to the Network Security Working Group, and elected Ben Blundell (ULL) and Michael Walters (LSUHSC-NO) as co-chairs to the Network Technical Advisory Group. Between the two groups, they created 12 sub-groups to focus the community’s engagement for the next 12 or more months.

Students Build Computers, Take Vital Signs, Learn Coding, and Fly Drones during Louisiana GEAR UP Summer Learning Programs
“This was the second computer that I’ve built. I built my first one with the help of my dad and YouTube videos,” exclaimed Owen Meier after building his second computer at Louisiana Tech University’s Demystifying the Computer Summer Learning Camp.
Owen, an 8
th
grade Louisiana GEAR UP student at McKinley Middle Magnet School, is interested in pursuing computer science, so the camp prepared him for a career in computer science. Another student, Cameron Johnson, expressed similar sentiments in how the camp provided him with career readiness.
“It’s fun learning how to build a computer. The camp will help me out if I decide to pursue engineering or information technology because I will already have knowledge about computers and how to build them.”
Owen and Cameron are both Louisiana GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) students. Louisiana GEAR UP, which is a federally-funded initiative administered by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and the Louisiana Board of Regents, is partnering with Grambling State University, Junior Achievement of Baton Rouge and Acadiana, Louisiana Tech University, Northwestern State University, and Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Centers to offer students with free summer learning programs.
Designed to provide students with academic enrichment, skills development, and college and career readiness, the summer learning programs will take place across the State of Louisiana in the months of June and July.
To date, Grambling State University’s Pathways to College SUCCESS, Louisiana Tech University’s GAMING for STEAM Careers, the AHEC Healthcare Awareness, and Louisiana Tech University’s Demystifying the Computer Summer Learning Camps have been hosted in the cities of Baton Rouge, Ruston, New Iberia, and Baton Rouge, respectively.
This week, Louisiana GEAR UP students are attending Louisiana Tech University’s GAMING for STEAM Careers Summer Learning Camp at Park Forest Middle School. During the camp, the students will participate in academic classes that strengthen their STEAM knowledge and conduct hands-on drone and robotics activities. At the end of the week, the students will take a campus tour of Louisiana Tech University and visit Louisiana Tech University’s SciTec Center.
The upcoming Louisiana GEAR UP Summer Learning Programs include the following:
Grambling State University’s Pathways to College SUCCESS
