New Raider News Email Series
Welcome to the University of Mount Union. We are excited to have you as a new student on campus this August! At Mount, you'll find a community that offers nonstop activity and opportunities to get involved. And best of all, it's a place that feels like home.
Thinking About Your Major and Fall Classes?
Scheduling your classes for the fall semester is one of the most important steps to becoming a new Raider! You'll get to make your fall semester schedule when you attend Preview, so the first step in scheduling classes is to make your  Preview  reservation online! Then, while you are at Preview, you'll meet with an academic advisor who will help you choose the right classes and leave Preview with a schedule that will help you hit the ground running in August!

Speaking of Preview, you indicated your major of interest on your admission application and your Preview reservation form, but did you know that this is not actually a declaration of a major? Students officially declare a major after their first semester at Mount Union. While you won't complete any official forms until your second semester, you can still take classes in your intended major (with the exception of education majors, who will start their first education class during their second semester). The declaration of major and minor forms are online, and your First Year Seminar instructor will help you find and complete these forms.

Your First Year Seminar instructor will also be your academic advisor as you schedule classes for your second semester at Mount Union, and that professor will remain your academic advisor until you declare your major. Once you've declared a major, you will be assigned a new advisor in the academic department in which your major is housed.

If you haven't decided on a major quite yet, don't worry at all! There is plenty of time to learn all about them and exploring what possible professions you might pursue with a degree from Mount Union. There are also supports in place to help you make these decisions, including your faculty advisor and the Center for Student Success. In fact, Marci Muckleroy, in the Center for Student Success, works with many students throughout the year to help them decide which major, minor, or career they would like to explore.

For more information, email Marci Muckleroy or call the Center for Student Success at (330) 823-8685
First Year Seminar
As a first-year student, you will take a First Year Seminar (FYS) during your first semester on campus as part of Mount Union's Integrative Core. The courses you choose from are both interesting and diverse. When you attend Preview, you'll register for your fall semester courses, and you'll get to choose your FYS course at that time!

The small class size in your FYS will allow you to interact closely with a professor who will help you cultivate a vision for your education. The FYS also will expose you to basic writing, communication, and critical thinking skills, among others.
Dual and College Credit Transcript Request
If you intend to bring in credit from a dual credit, PSEO, or College-Credit Plus program, you will need to order an official transcript from the college or university that awarded the credit. Transcripts must be sent to the Office of Admission.
Integrative Core
After Preview, you will know which First Year Seminar (FYS) you'll be taking, but there are  so many other opportunities to select something exciting to add to your schedule  each semester!

Foundations Courses  focus on four majors areas of human knowledge - humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and arts, building on the skills you learned in the FYS. They allow students to explore the perspectives of different fields and think critically about what has happened in the past, what issues are occurring in society today, and what the future looks like through these different lenses. As a reminder,  Foundations Courses are designated by the letter following the course code : i.e. PSY 110S

A - Fine Art
S - Social Science
H - Humanities
N - Natural Science

Once you've completed your Foundations Courses, you'll need to submit your Written and Oral Communication ( WOC ) Portfolio. While it may seem intimidating at first, the WOC portfolio will give you  confidence  in your writing and public speaking abilities and help you learn how to  engage your audience  and  approach research . Practice now leads to fewer all-nighters later.

Following your exploration in Foundations Courses, your strengthened skills will be ready to tackle  Theme Courses and the Capstone Seminar . The Theme Courses help you integrate ideas, methods and perspectives from different fields while in the Capstone Seminar you will work with fellow students to address a real-world issue.

Get ready for challenging,  yet incredibly rewarding courses  that will  prepare you for life beyond college. .. and  provide some fun  along the way! Our Class of 2022 is full of exceptional Raiders and we can't wait to see what you accomplish!
"I chose Mount Union for two reasons: it was close to home and the education program is top notch."

"Engaging in a liberal arts education allows you to approach everything in your own profession with a more open mind . "
