Plastic-Free July
By Ruth Robinson
While I support "no plastic", I am not there yet in my own home. How about we try "less plastic July"?

Some suggestions:

Got grand-kids? Do they like summer smoothies? Instead of plastic straws, try to find paper ones. Since that is nearly impossible, try re-usable straws, generally made of metal. You'll need a tiny special brush to clean the straw, and these are usually right next to the metal straws at places like Whole Foods.

We see the stores starting to display Back to School items. Treat your kids or grands to metal lunch boxes. Not the kind we all had as kids, but the version that looks like a stainless steel bento box. Holds up very well, easy to rinse out at night. Mostly replaces the need to wrap up food in plastic wrap or baggies.

We all grocery shop and the yummy produce is so appealing in the summer. While I'll bet most of us try and re-use the store's produce plastic bags, maybe we could dump those in favor of mesh washable and reusable bags. You could buy them on Amazon or at many of our local stores, OR you could go to Joann's and buy mesh fabric to sew up some. Directions on the internet, just search for "how to make mesh produce bags". Perhaps get a start on the 2018 holidays and stitch up a bunch for gifts.

Mason jars (remember canning??) make great storage containers for many things.   That grain or rice you buy at the natural grocery store not only looks appealing in a glass jar, but is healthier for you in an easy to clean and non-plastic storage container. Bonus: keeps bugs out and doesn't temp the little mice if your pantry shelf is in the garage.

Need a new dish brush? Check out the ones with wooden handles vs. plastic. They look so much better and less plastic in the house.
World One Festival
Welcome to all the new Person's of the Planet. Thank you so much for taking a stand for the Earth. We can be a force for good when many individuals do what the can, with what knowledge and resources they have. The important question "Is this good for the Planet?" keeps all our decisions thoughtful and effective. We look forward to seeing you at Movie nights, or Speaker nights, as we all educate ourselves about the many issues this earth is dealing with. We are the voice for the Planet.

It was great to talk to so many of you on Wednesday at the World One Festival in El Cerrito. The Earth Ball was hugged by many a child and a few adults too. Our seed flower confetti was a big hit. The raffle winners have been contacted. Gifts included Luci solar lights, Lead Test Kits for drinking water, and paint sets of wild life pictures for children. The winners have been contacted.

Most of all, it was heart-warming to know that many people are passionate about the health of this planet (whether they signed up for POP or not). More than one person did not sign up because they simple did not want to get another email. I can totally understand that. It's exhausting sometimes getting through many emails, even if you WANT to know what is going on. Maybe we will re-think the weekly post and do every other week to let you know about our events. Some still signed their names but said no to email. I hope these emails are not annoying. We do post information and short articles that we have written, or interesting articles or videos. Many of you have sent us articles of things you have read or discovered. But we sincerely try to keep the posts short. It's all part of sharing what we learn so all can rise together in knowledge. The email is: [email protected]

Let's work together to make this planet a better place to live.

For the Planet,

Shanti M.
