EGGSPLORATION
Teitel Residents welcomed a visitor from Huron-Clinton Metro-Parks, who provided a fascinating presentation on chickens and the gestation of an egg. Teitel will house an incubator in their Winter Garden. Residents will witness eggs hatching and help take care of them too.
MEDITATION
Fleischman resident, Irene Vengen, takes a moment to meditate before her daily Rumikuub match.
For many, meditating is finding a quiet place to start the process of relaxing. By simply sitting for a few minutes and breathing  slowly and deeply , meditation has begun. The next step is focusing on one calming image or the breath. Think of a placid lake at sunset or a campfire at night. Try to resist allowing random thoughts to distract. Since meditation is a mental exercise that trains the mind to remain focused and aware of “drifting” into unwanted thought patterns, meditating regularly can actually improve an older adult’s cognitive ability involving concentration, memory and attention.
CAULIFLOWER CHICKEN NACHOS
Ingredients:
  • 1 head of cauliflower, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 3 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 1 rotisserie chicken, skin removed and chicken shredded
  • Guacamole (recipe below)
  • Pico de gallo (recipe below)
  • Cilantro lime sauce for serving (recipe below)
  • Creamy hot sauce for serving (recipe below)

Directions:
Cut cauliflower into pieces. Clean and dry off. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper then lightly grease paper with cooking oil. Place cut cauliflower on parchment paper and spray with cooking oil. Season with salt and pepper. Roast on 400′ for about 25 minutes until edges are slightly crispy. Remove from oven and set aside. Combine shredded rotisserie chicken with hot sauce 1 tablespoon at a time until desired heat level. (you don’t have to use all of it or you can add more if you really like it spicy!) Layer roasted cauliflower, shredded chicken, guacamole and pico de gallo on a serving dish. Top with cilantro lime sauce and creamy hot sauce.

WHY INDEPENDENT LIVING IS THE
RIGHT CHOICE
You made the decision to leave your home and move somewhere to make your life simpler. You want to experience independent living in a happy and safe place that meets your needs without giving up your independence. For many older adults independent living feels more like a vacation than a facility.
At JSL, our communities are designed specifically to meet your needs so you can continue to live independently. Someone else is taking care of the cooking, the gardening, the laundry and cleaning, so you can focus more on enjoying the things you love the most - companionship, socializing, exercise, stimulating activities, day programs, out trips, musical entertainment and culture. Our JSL program directors create full calendars of activities that allow for a wide variety of experiential learning. Book clubs, current event chats, computer technology, the arts… and we also share a campus with the JCC who provides access to their numerous older adult educational programming. The possibilities for living well are endless.

While your home at JSL is totally private and functional, our shared spaces and common areas offer the perfect nooks and crannies to hang out with friends. If you need medical or daily living assistance while living here, we can help. In many ways, assisted living facilities are like independent living communities. The biggest difference is that, with assisted living, residents are no longer able to live on a completely independent basis. They require assistance with daily personal and/or medical needs. JSL can provide you with this assistance, in an environment rich with Jewish values and Yiddishkeit, with delicious kosher food in beautifully appointed dining rooms. If you can still live on your own and just want to make life more simple, independent living is the best choice for you! Come visit us! Contact Tracey Proghovnick and schedule a tour today!
