Wow, has it been a busy week! And there's no sign of the action letting up before our
final day of school on
June 14th. Please be sure to give this newsletter a careful read so you are aware of all the fun things that we have cooking!
The week began with a
Service Learning Trip
for our 6th Year Students. They traveled to the new garden being built by Families in Transition (FIT), and provided people power to support that effort.
I really enjoyed service learning. It made me proud and feel helpful.

On Wednesday we hosted our
Annual Step Up Night - one of the most important nights of the year - when parents/guardians of students moving from Kinder to Lower Elementary, and 3rd Year Students moving to Upper Elementary and of course our incoming Kinder students, are asked to join us so they can learn about what's next for their children.
 On Thursday,
MFCS Music Teacher Ms. Cassie and some of her students
shared their voices, rhythms and poetry after school to an enthusiastic audience of parents, extended family members and our aftercare crew. Beautiful sounds filled the air, and we can't wait for a longer performance next year!
 Today we began the day with our annual
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast - an event catered by our staff to show our heartfelt appreciation for all the ideas, time, energy and kindness shared by so many of you during this school year. It takes a village, and we are so very fortunate to have such a wonderful MFCS Community of committed volunteers! While many joined us, some were not able, but to all of you we say, THANK YOU!!!
 Soon after the children arrived, we gathered for an all-school meeting where our
After School Drama Club, led by Ms. Becca and Ms. Christine,
shared their performance of A Bad Case of the Stripes adapted for stage from the book by David Shannon. Beyond our students and staff, we were joined by MFCS parents, grandparents and friends for this engaging performance which went off without a hitch! Congrats to all involved and thanks for sharing!
 Tonight we are looking forward to the final
Upper Elementary Dance. The student dance Committee has organized a great night and DJ Ron is sure to fill the room with great tunes. Special thanks to Ms. Colleen for helping guide the Committee, to Ms. Roxanne for fielding the calls, and to all of you who donated items and those who will serve up the pizza tonight. Hoping the kids have a great time!

Moments from the first-ever
MFCS Talent Show!
For those of you lucky enough to attend our first EVER MFCS Talent Show, you know that you were part of something really special. Led by Ms. Becca and Ms. Christine, with the help of our MC Camden, the students and their Talent Show Coaches ROCKED the HOUSE! We were so thrilled that the audience was so large and enthusiastic and that the student performers did such a great job showing off their musical, dancing and performance talents.
Sending out a HUGE thank you to Becca and Christine and to all the families who supported our student-performers. Here's to making this an annual event!

Service Learning:
More than Just a Volunteer Day!
Each year, our 6th Year Students participate in multiple Service Learning Projects as part of the Montessori
Elementary Program
Cap Year Curriculum. Service Learning seeks to blend volunteer/service opportunities with the learning going on in the academic setting.
As part of this program, the 6th Year Students meet weekly during the winter and spring to learn about service learning as an
approach
to community engagement and study, and then work together to identify projects they wish to engage in as a group.
The final project this year involved a trip to a new community garden which is being designed and operated by Families in Transition (FIT) a local non profit organization serving homeless families. Before and after the day of work, our students kept journals, as one means of processing what they were learning and what they experienced out in the field.
Below are some photos from the garden, paired with some excerpts from their writing.
I liked the service learning part of our curriculum because it opened our eyes, so that we could see how we could help people...I am planning on going back to volunteer on my own!
