FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
I visited this morning with a young lady here at school who I’ve come to know well. She has had some behavioral challenges in the past – nothing major, just dust-ups really, wherein she just runs out of cope and spills over at a peer or a teacher with some choice language, usually followed by tears and very sincere apologies.

She’s had a way better year this year.

She’s growing up and managing overwhelm more effectively every day.

This morning, she shared some concerns about her grades.

She’s failing three classes – not by a lot, and she’s pretty sure that if she could spend a couple afternoons here at school, just focusing on getting some assignments caught up, she could get all of her grades to passing by winter break.

But there are complications.

She has younger siblings to pick up at a nearby elementary every afternoon.

She takes the city bus to their school and then walks them home.

They are doing well in school, because she supervises their homework and makes sure they eat a good dinner each night.

Her mom doesn’t get home until pretty late from work and by then is fairly wiped out.

Mom’s paycheck doesn’t cover cable/internet each month. Sometimes it does, so our young lady has access to it some days, but she would really like to stay here at school at least a couple of times so that she can get her work done using our reliable internet and available teacher-tutors to help complete the necessary research.

She is hoping that her mom will allow her siblings to stay at their school’s after care program a few times to let her stay here and get caught up, but mom doesn’t love the idea.

I called her siblings’ elementary principal and he is going to call mom and try to gain her confidence in the after-care program so that her younger kids can stay a couple of afternoons each week.

One of our AP's is working on getting our student a free HotSpot device that our district has available so that she can reliably have internet access at home.

Our after school homework center teachers are being alerted that she is headed their way and they are organizing supports for her there and her counselor is going to reach out to her teachers to make sure they are aware of her commitment to getting things caught up; they will make sure she can do so as efficiently as possible.

It’s not yet been an hour since the conversation with our student and so many wheels of support and care are already in motion.

I wish I could say it always worked out this way, but the truth is that sometimes we don’t know the challenges our kids are grappling with and we misinterpret their overwhelm as obstinance, defiance, a lack of caring.

Our approaches sometimes then go awry, and we press for banal compliance instead of doing the hard work of helping a young person unpack and process their adversities.

But sometimes, like today, The Village rises and it’s a very good day.

LC Principal

AVID Giving Tree: For the past three years, AVID helped Lewis and Clark and our fabulous community get a present for every student at Grant Elementary. This year, we want to do the same thing…the AVID Giving Tree is back. The Giving Tree will run between December 2-20. Please take a tag from the tree - there will be orange tags for girls and red tags for boys with the teacher and grade level. We would love your help to get toys, books, stuffed animals, and other small gifts - between $5 and $10 - for every kid at Grant Elementary. We also need wrapping paper, and cash donations are greatly appreciated.

Bring back your generous gift, wrapped or unwrapped, with the tag and place it in the boxes located in the entrance of the school and in the student and public offices. The AVID classes will be delivering the gifts to Grant! So on Black Friday, don’t pass up those deals. Keep your eyes out for a small present that will make a huge difference in the life of a child. Thank you!!!
