U-M Enters Research Collaboration to Study Inflammatory Bowel Disease
FFMI facilitates research partnership
 A new research partnership between U-M and scientific wellness company
Arivale aims to understand the genetic risk factors of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic condition affecting 1.6 million people in the U.S.
Approximately 70,000 new cases of IBD are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and includes those with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These chronic, lifelong conditions can be treated but not cured, pointing to the need for more research.
The partnership, facilitated by Fast Forward Medical Innovation at the U-M Medical School, will use phenotypes available in the Arivale database to inform the development of potential lifestyle and pharmaceutical therapies for the condition.

U-M Therapeutic Innovation Fund RFP -
Up to $150K to Support Drug Discovery
 The
U-M Therapeutic Innovation Fund, offered by the Michigan Center for Therapeutic Innovation (MCTI) and Fast Forward Medical Innovation, is a five-year, $2.5 million fund created in 2016 to accelerate the discovery and translation of therapeutic candidates at the University of Michigan.
The fund supports the discovery and optimization of small molecule lead compounds for projects with a specific, novel, and testable drug discovery hypothesis. Selected projects receive funding and resources to support medicinal chemistry efforts through MCTI and funding for drug design, assay development, cell biology, structural biology, and pharmacology (up to $150,000 in value for each award for a period of 18 months with the funds being disbursed in two stages). The fund is jointly administered by MCTI and FFMI.
The submission deadline is Friday, July 27, 2018, at 5:00pm.

Mi-TRAC Awards are part of the
MTRAC for Life Sciences Innovation Hub. Made possible by the
Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and co-managed by FFMI and the U-M Office of Technology Transfer, the awards provide mid-stage, translational research funding and resources for proof-of-concept and late-stage translational studies with a high potential of commercial success. We're excited to kick off the third year of this statewide research innovation and commercialization program with the recent renewal of funding from the MEDC.
Innovators from all schools at the University of Michigan, other institutions of higher education, non-profit research centers, and hospital systems across Michigan are eligible to submit projects for funding consideration.

Latest News from Project Teams Who Received FFMI Funding, Training, and Support
Mi-TRAC Awardee and
Monroe-Brown Seed Fund recipient,
Genomenon, hosted their first Ask Me Anything (AMA) on a 15 million subscriber subreddit called r/askscience on Thursday, June 21. People were able to ask questions to Genomenon's leadership team on genomics and what the future holds for Next-Generation Sequencing. (
Team members from Genomenon will be at Researchpalooza on August 8, joining us right across the aisle on Innovation Alley at table #87.)

On the Road with FFMI
Connie Chang, M.B.A.. FFMI Interim Executive Director, attended the Michigan Venture Capital Association 12 at 12 event about pathways to success for University spin-out companies. Hosted by Dr. Tom Shehab, Managing Director at Arboretum Ventures and Chairman of MVCA, the purpose of the 12 at 12 event series is to gather experienced entrepreneurs, investors, and community leaders to share their perspectives on a key point of interest impacting the entrepreneurial and investment community.
Brad Martin, Ph.D., Senior Director of Commercialization Programs, and Michelle Larkin, M.S.E., Biomedical Innovation Specialist, served as judges at the 2018 Massey TBI Grand Challenge Wolverine Den administered by MCIRCC/Emergency Medicine.
Debra Grega, M.B.A., Ph.D., Business Development Director, traveled to Gothenburg, Sweden for t
he Renal Pre-Competitive Consortium (RPC2). The RPC2, comprised of the University of Michigan and four pharmaceutical companies, met to discuss experiments and
-omics data. In its third year, the goal for RPC2 continues to be the identification of biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for chronic renal disease.
Najoua Elbourkadi, Ph.D., Associate Director for Business Development, represented FFMI as part of a two-day international symposium on lipodystrophy, co-hosted by FFMI and U-M's Dr. Elif Oral, M.D., M.S., U-M Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes.
FFMI was part of a group invited and convened by the New Economy Initiative (NEI) and the William Davidson Foundation to discuss the innovation and entrepreneurial assets in the region.
