Trail Notes ...

This Sunday: Our missionaries, the Vivanco Family, are visiting us!

HOW WE DO MISSIONS NOW

From Greenland's icy mountains, from India's coral strand,
Where Afric's sunny fountains roll down their golden sand,
From many an ancient river, from many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver their land from error's chain.
                                                            Hymnal 1940 #254

This old hymn represents an old understanding of Christian missionary work: sending people from western countries to the wilds of Africa and Asia to share the Gospel and correct the natives' erroneous beliefs and ways of life. Thankfully, this has largely died out, its arrogance and imperial tendencies recognized and repudiated.

Cameron and Roberto Vivanco , missionaries who are supported by St. Dunstan's and many other parishes, work according to a new paradigm for mission. They live among the people of Ecuador, sharing various ministries with them to improve the lives of young people particularly. They share the Gospel of Christ, not from above but from within. Native culture is honored and respected. If this new paradigm has a motto, it might be: "They'll know we are Christians by our love."

While they are with us this Sunday, with their three children, Cameron will preach and Roberto will share his musical gifts in our service. After worship, they'll speak with us about their current work, particularly helping young Ecuadorians stay in school through their initiative called Education=Hope.  This work has been growing, reaching more and more kids. It's also at work in other countries such as Haiti.

I hope all of you will make a special effort to be in church this Sunday, July 22, and stay after the service to hear from the Vivancos. We'll have extra goodies for refreshments. Please look at the Vivancos' schedule in this Trailblazer for other opportunities to share in their ministry while they are here. JBM

Christian Formation ...

The Vivancos are here!

Today I had the great joy of picking up the Vivanco Family from the airport for their visit with us. That joy was doubled by the generosity of others who have gifted their home for lodging and a van for moving them around during their stay. There is also continual thanksgiving for the support of children through Education Equals Hope .

On Sunday morning, July 22, we will have the opportunity to hear from both Cameron and Roberto during our worship and in a forum following the service. We hope that you will join us for this time to learn more about how you can be involved in their ministry.

Saturday evening, July 21, the Vivancos will be sharing their ministry with the people of Misa Magdalena, one of the Latina congregations in the Diocese of Washington. The evening will being with a meal at 6:00 p.m. followed by a offering of music and worship. Many of the members of this community are Ecuadorians. All are welcome to join the evening - but know that the majority of the event will be in Spanish. For directions to the church go here.

One of the many programs in their ministry is the hosting of short-term mission teams. One of our own, Tucker Hemphill participated in a mission team in the summer of 2015. This Monday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. our parish will host young adults who have participated in short-term missions for dinner and conversation. Most of these young adults went to Ecuador while they were high school students and attended Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Upper SC. All are welcome to attend, but please RSVP to Sue so that adequate plans can be made for food and drink.

Once again St. Dunstan's will partner with the National Center for Children and Families to provide filled backpacks to children in need. For many children in the DMV the money needed to provide backpacks and school supplies means their isn't a meal on the table or clothes to wear. So, children begin the school year another step behind their peers and can be easily discounted by their classmates for not having those supplies.

Last year we provided 25 backpacks. I believe that we can do better. Let's try to up our number of backpacks to 30! Two backpacks will be there as examples this Sunday. Please pick up a supply list flyer, head to your local store, select a backpack, and fill it with those items listed for a particular age group. Then return your backpack no later than August 19. That Sunday we will bless the backpacks and send them on to be given to children throughout the DMV.

Backpack & Brownies

A Backpack Stuff Party will be held at NCCF on Wednesday, August 15 at 6:00 p.m. Join me as we gather with others from the community to stuff more backpacks. For more information about this event and how to get there go here.

Outreach ...

Chicken+Noodles=113,981 Meals

Did you know that St. Dunstan's folks prepare and send 20 or so large casseroles to So Others Might Eat (SOME) every month?  With similar contributions from many others around Washington, SOME has provided 113,981 nutritious meals to hungry children, women, and men -   in only 5 months, from January through May.  That's astounding!

SOME also just opened a new ministry center for homeless persons, the Conway Center, which combines housing, healthcare, and job training services all under one roof.  This is a huge facility - 320,000 square feet, housing 30 families and 152 individuals.

It's inspiring to see the transformative work of SOME in our city.  Many thousands of donors helped make this happen, including our casserole makers from St. Dunstan's over the last 30 years.  JBM
