School starts in one week
We hope our parents and students have enjoyed their summer break and are ready for school to start next week. Our faculty and staff have spent time learning, preparing, relaxing and traveling over the last few weeks, as you can read in the next story. We are now ready to welcome your students! Here is a schedule of events:

Monday: Freshman Orientation: Ignite the Spirit! 5:00-8:00 p.m. starting in the Robinson Auditorium. See registration email for more info.
New Parent Welcome Event, 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the Robinson Auditorium Lobby. All freshman parents invited. See email invitation for more info.

Tuesday: Student Registration grades 10-12. Seniors 9 a.m., juniors 10 a.m., sophomores 11 a.m. in the Administrative Corridor and Cafeteria. See registration email for more info.

Wednesday: School begins at 8:00 a.m. on an A Day schedule. Dismissal is at 3:00 p.m. Students should be in uniform, including wearing their newly printed ID badge, with their iPads charged.

July 30-31: Back-to-School Mornings 7:30-8:30 a.m. Accompany your student through the school to meet his/her teachers. Parents are then invited to gather in the Administrative Corridor for coffee and a chance to talk with administration.

Stay informed throughout the year!
  • The eVision is sent generally every two weeks except during breaks and includes student news and updates/reminders for parents.
  • Daily Announcements are posted online each day before noon so parents can keep up with events. Click on the Daily Announcements Quick Link from the school website home page.
  • The school website home page features a News section with forms and reminders parents may need. Check there often for updates.
Teachers and staff learn, travel over summer break
Our teachers have been busy this summer. Some were learning or training, including Mrs. Maria (Cochran) Harritt '10, who took classes to teach AP history courses. Some traveled, including Mrs. Sharon Mooney, who toured the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. And Mr. Alan Mathews '88  got married! Students excel on AP exams
The College Board has recognized 24 seniors and recent graduates as AP Scholars in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams taken in May 2018.

Achieving the commendation of AP Scholar, which is awarded to those students earning an average score of 3 or higher on a five-point scale on three or more AP exams taken, were seniors Joe Gryboski, Ross Reyes, Griffin Rogers, Brandon Schafer, and Jacqueline Scott; and recent graduates Mirashaye Basa, Olivia Dome, Adam Garcia, Nicholas Katchur, Heidi Popson, Jack Wagner, Brogan Welch, and Hannah Wolford.

Achieving the commendation of AP Scholar with Honor Award, which is awarded to those students earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams, were senior Austin Hughes and recent graduates Cody Gibbs, Grace Kempf, and Ryan Strahm.

Achieving the commendation of AP Scholar with Distinction Award, which is awarded to those students earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and a 3 or higher on five or more of these exams, were senior Adriel Nacpil and recent graduates Kaleb Dunn, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Katerina Jones, Emma Kerr, Olivia Storz, and Joseph Uhl.

Additionally, Providence students ranked above the global average in 2018 with 67 percent of AP exams taken resulting in a score of 3 or higher. The 2018 Indiana average of AP scores of 3 or higher was 53 percent, and the global average was 61 percent. This is the fourth year in a row that PHS students ranked above the global average.
STUDENT PROFILE
Students take part in summer leadership camps
Some of our students took part in activities that combined learning and fun with students from throughout the state and the world. Junior Regan Elias attended the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., in June. The conference is for rising juniors and seniors from around the world to focus on environmental concerns and how to prevent and solve those issues. She was featured in a video on the dangers of microplastics and reusable straws. Seniors Bryce Drury and Harry Green attended Hoosier Boys State, and seniors Emma Rauck and Jenna Kaiser attended Hoosier Girls State, both weeklong simulations for Indiana students on local and state government held at Trine University.

Sports news: Girls Tennis All American, NTSPY Awards, Baseball All State
Trinkle named All American
Senior Halli Trinkle was named an All-American by the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation. She is one of 42 girls across the country and one of two from Indiana, including her opponent on the Carmel High School team.

Halli also was named an IndyStar Sports Award winner for Girls Tennis and was also voted Girls Overall Player of the Year and Girls Tennis Player of the Year at the News & Tribune NTSPY Awards in June. It is the third year in a row she has been named Girls Tennis Player of the Year at the NTSPY Awards.

Halli's teammate junior Natalie Boesing was named Girls Athlete of the Year. Coach Scott Gurgol was named Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.
 
Other student-athletes also were honored at the event. Marissa Hornung '18, who will play Division I volleyball at Purdue University this fall, was named Volleyball Player of the Year. Junior Austin Hughes was named Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

All-Area Team members named
Several spring sports athletes were named to News & Tribune all-area teams:
  • Softball: Hannah Wolford '18, All-Area First Team
  • Baseball: Timmy Borden '18, All-Area First Team; seniors Christian Graf and Kaden Williams, All-Area Second Team; and Nathan Proctor '18 and senior Joe Wilkinson, All-Area Honorable Mention
  • Boys Track: Spencer Purcell '18, All-Area First Team; junior Austin Grantz, All-Area Second Team; and sophomore Brandon Barron and seniors Bryce Drury and Chris Heselschwerdt, All-Area Honorable Mention.
Borden named All State player
In other sports news, Timmy Borden '18 was named to the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association 3A All-State team as one of four players in the state selected in the Major League Baseball draft.

Sophomore commits to Purdue volleyball
Sophomore Volleyball standout Ali Hornung has verbally committed to play the same sport at Purdue University, where she will join her sister Marissa in two years.
Girls Basketball assistant position opening
Providence High School Girls Basketball has an immediate opening for a position of varsity assistant Girls Basketball coach. Interested candidates should be highly motivated, hard working, and talented and also believe in teaching the fundamentals of the game and building player relationships.

The coach will assist the head coach in all aspects of the program, attend daily practices 3:30-6:00, assist with scouting both live and on film, assist in developing game plans and scouting reports, and assist in player development before, during, and after the season.

Minimum requirements for the position are high school playing experience, ability to pass Safe and Sacred training and background check, and ability to attend practices and games during season.

Preferred qualifications are college playing experience, previous coaching experience, flexible schedule to allow for 3:00 arrival time during season, and the ability to attend offseason and summer workouts and camps.

Free-Reduced Lunch applications available
Applications for students to receive free or reduced fee school lunch are now available online.

New Parent Welcome, Freshman Orientation
All freshman parents, especially first-time Providence parents, are invited to attend a New Parent Welcome event on Monday, July 23, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Freshmen will be participating in their orientation from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Parents can meet administrators, purchase school uniforms, set up a cafeteria account, and get help with Skyward. Light refreshments will be served.

Registration grades 10-12
Reminder that students should follow the dress code in the Student-Parent Handbook for school photos when they arrive for registration on Tuesday. Students will have photos taken for school IDs, and underclassmen also will have yearbook photos taken.  Students also may set up lunch accounts, purchase school uniforms, and pick up vehicle registration decals.

Parents must sign off on several forms prior to registration: Student/Parent Handbook, Drug Testing Permission, Photo Opt Out, Medical/Emergency Changes.

Student schedule change deadline
The last date to change student schedules for the fall semester is July 24 in the Guidance Office from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

School uniforms
School uniforms may be purchased at RiverCity Workwear, 4020 Earnings Way, New Albany, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An online store also is available, and items will be available for purchase during registration and orientation.

Senior Parents Reminders
Seniors have two required immunizations before the start of school: booster dose of MCV4 and Hepatitis A. Written documentation from the student's doctor is required.

Seniors must have their yearbook photo taken at Whyland's Studio in Jeffersonville or Lifetouch in Highlander Point in Floyds Knobs. Please schedule an appointment soon.

Summer reading information is posted on the school website. Assignments are due on the second day of class.

BLUE PRIDE ON DISPLAY
Local attorney helps physician stay in U.S.
As an attorney and Clarksville town judge, Jimmie Guilfoyle '05 has
heard many stories from clients and trial defendants. But few moved him like that of Dr. Ali, a Louisville intensive care pulmonary specialist and a native of Syria. The physician works at the same Louisville hospital with Guilfoyle's wife, Casey, a nurse. Dr. Ali had heard her husband was an attorney and one day earlier this year approached her to see if he might be able to help him resolve his stagnant Permanent Residence Card application.

She immediately called her husband, and upon hearing his story, Guilfoyle picked up the phone and started calling anyone he could think of to help. Thanks to his efforts, Dr. Ali can now remain working in the United States and travel to see his family for the first time in years. Read more.
