Unexpected Inspiration
Last week, my husband, Jim, and I visited Lambeau Stadium. Not really into football, I considered finding a bench and checking email, but instead, decided to walk with him through the Packer Hall of Fame. I hadn't planned to be inspired but one exhibit caught my eye, a hand-written letter from Bill Butler, the athletics instructor for the Boy's Club of Washington, D.C., to Coach Vince Lombardi.
Willie Wood had not been chosen in the 1959 National Football League draft and Bill Butler wanted to know why. In his letter he pointed out Willie's talents, "... this kid is... a good ballhandler, strong runner and a tremendous passer. He can really throw the long ball." He wrote, "Mr. Lombardi, if you could see this kid unshackled you would really agree with me."
Willie had been overlooked by all 13 NFL teams. He was considered too small and "unpolished." He was also a black man when black athletes were not quarterbacks.
Based on that letter, Vince Lombardi reconsidered Willie, which resulted in giving him a $6,500 free agent contract. He was the last player to make the 1960 Packer squad.
He became a starter in his second season, earned All-Pro honors nine times and played in 8 Pro Bowls. He went on to become the first black head coach with the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League. Willie was inducted into the Packer Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
Bill Butler's humble letter stood out to me amid the shiny trophies and rings. One person took the time and had the moxie to reach out to the esteemed coach to advocate for a young man who would have been overlooked.
This little piece of Packer history was my unexpected inspiration. It edified me to think about who, with a little effort, we might lift up and help other's see in a different light. It made me wonder about the power we might have to advocate for another. In doing so, how might we change the course of someone's life and in some way transform the fabric of our culture?

Bible Camp Follow-up
"Bible Camp was a month ago and we heard from parents that their kids are still singing some of the songs! Here is a list of some of the songs we sung each day. Some were openings and closings and others were during our music sessions with Mrs. Farrell and Mrs. Wieber. Happy singing!"

Alpha is returning to St. Anthony this Fall
Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe, and everyone's welcome. It runs in cafés, churches, universities, homes-you name it. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation.

Peru Container
We will begin collecting Family to Family bins and general items in good, clean condition August 4 12. The Parish Life Center will be open around Mass times on the weekends and from 8:004:00 Monday thru Thursday and 8:00Noon on Friday, August 10. There will be volunteers available if you need help unloading on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am-Noon. The container will ship on August 15th.
We need many volunteers to help with sorting, inventorying and then loading the
container
. This is a great way for high school teens can get a jump start on their Confirmation Service Hours. The dates/times help is needed can be found
here.

Friday August 10 is St. Anthony's turn to help at the MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary Meal Program. This is a ministry serving homeless and at risk homeless in Milwaukee's Inner City. Volunteers are needed to donate food and/or serve the meal on site. Food donations would need to be brought to the St Anthony on the Lake Fellowship Hall kitchen by 12:00 on August 10. Volunteer servers are needed from 2:30 to 5:15 with a carpool leaving St Anthony's at 1:45 and returning around 6:00.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Members of the parish create prayer shawls for individuals seeking the prayerful support of our community. The shawls are created in community, prayed over, and shared. Catechists are imperative!
In the Bible, God reminds his people to remember the wonderful things God has done for them, and to "make them known to your children and your children's children." The great commandment to know and love God is found in verses 4 & 5 of Chapter 6 in the Book of Deuteronomy. Do you know what follows? Verse 6 and 7 say, "Take to heart these words. . . Keep repeating them to your children. . . "
This command is at the heart of our faith formation programs for children and youth. We know it is up to us to share the stories of God, and tell of our relationship with God, to the next generation.
We cannot do that without Catechists; adults who are willing to invest time in creating relationships with the next generation, reminding them of the greatness of God and of God's incredible love and care.

Help out from 9-11:30 am at the Hope Center Clothing Shop in Waukesha on Sat., July 21. We will be sorting and hanging clothes and assisting those in need to find clothes. For families with children in the 5th grade and up. The Hope Center helps prevent homelessness by providing meals, clothing and furniture to those in need in Waukesha County. Pope Francis tells us, "

House of Peace School Supply Drive - August 4-17

Summer 2018 Mission Trips
The last of our high school mission trips concludes this Friday - pray for a successful final day for the soon to be Sophomores serving in Milwaukee with Reach Out Reach In.
Another opportunity to have a profound and Holy experience! Reach Out Reach In is a summer service week for high school youth who want to be involved in direct service and social action.
Youth learn about the many community organizations, located around the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, that work to meet the needs of the poor and vulnerable in the city. Site locations including homeless shelters, adult day care, community organizations, meal programs, family/organic farms, child care and more. The experience includes community, simple living, prayer, and justice education.

Summer Outreach Camp
Our summer service work continues next week when 35 of our youth take part in Build to Last - our Middle School Mission Trip. Please pray for them as they serve in Waukesha County. Join us in prayer at daily Mass on Wednesday and Thursday, July 25 & 26. Thank you to all the parents and others who are volunteering to make this Camp a success!
