On August 5, Birchwood Camp will hold their annual jamboree. There will be a silent and live auction as a fundraiser for the camp. You can enjoy camp activities like archery, boating, and the challenge course. The event will conclude with a campfire cookout. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to 907-688-2734.

Ministry with the Poor stories
|
One of the four focus areas of the UMC is Ministry with the Poor. The Board of Church and Society is collecting stories of how these ministries address the root causes of poverty and how God is using relationships to transform communities in our conference. Fran Lynch will have a conversation with one of the Church and Society staff in the near future to share information about our conference. She needs your stories. Please email her ([email protected]) with a story and/or information no later than Wed. July 25 if your church has a story to tell. Thank you.

Superintendent Rapanut out in July
|
Superintendent Carlo Rapanut will be on renewal leave for the month of July. If there is an emergency, please contact Rev. Bob Smith who will be covering for Carlo. You can reach Bob at 907-330-7770. Crystal will continue to be in the office during normal business hours.

GC2019 no longer needs registration fees
|
 The Commission on General Conference has reversed its call for $200 registration fees for visitors after finding other ways to cover costs of the special session of the denomination's lawmaking assembly.

Bishops seek court ruling on Way Forward plans
|
 The United Methodist Council of Bishops has asked the denomination's top court to rule on the constitutionality of some of the legislation submitted by the Commission on a Way Forward. The commission was charged with finding ways to resolve the denomination's longtime debate over homosexuality.

Last of detained missionaries arrives home
|
 Miracle Osman, the last of three United Methodist missionaries seeking to leave the Philippines after being placed on a government watch list, arrived July 13 in her home country of Malawi. The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries had launched a #LetThemLeave campaign on their behalf.

Animated Wesleys share church history
|
A new video resource from United Methodist Communications uses an animated John and Charles Wesley to share United Methodist history in an innovative and contemporary way.
Created for use in confirmation classes, new member classes,
Sunday school and small discussion groups, "The Wesleys Take the Web" is a series of three 1-minute episodes (also available as one 3-minute video) that aims to generate conversation about the history of The United Methodist Church and make it appealing to younger people. The videos look at how John and Charles Wesley might have used social media and smartphones to share the church's message, while incorporating history, facts and trivia throughout.

YOUTH 2019 early registration begins
|
 Discounted early-bird registration is underway for YOUTH 2019, the national gathering for United Methodist youth and their leaders next year in Kansas City that promises four days of discipleship, worship, Bible study, service opportunities and life-changing fun.
YOUTH 2019, with the theme Love Well, will feature big-name musical artists, excellent United Methodist speakers and many learning opportunities for youth grades 6-12 and their leaders. The event is sponsored every four years by Young People's Ministries (YPM), a unit of Discipleship Ministries.
The event will be held at the Kansas City Convention Center & Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, July 10-14, 2019. For more information, go to http://youth2019.com.
Registration is limited to the first 8,000 youth and leaders. The early registration fee is $319 through Jan. 31. The regular price will be $359 from February through March, and late registration is $419 after April 1. To register, go to https://bit.ly/2mbKDpS.

Kemper, Fernandes named co-directors of UMCOR
|
Thomas Kemper, top executive of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, and Roland Fernandes, the mission agency's Chief Operating Officer, have been named co-executive directors of United Methodist Committee on Relief.

Where the hymnal stops, they step in
|
A team of United Methodist experts gives guidance on which contemporary Christian songs to use in worship, with a focus on theology, language and sing-ability. A green list offers songs recommended with few or no reservations, and a yellow list is compiled for songs recommended, but with cautions. Some highly popular songs don't make either list. Sam Hodges reports.

The United Methodist Communications Public Information Team is hosting two upcoming webinars to support local churches as they strive to embrace social media and its uses for outreach and ministry.
