If I had just 18-minutes to live, the ultra-clear messages contained in these two videos are the ones I would be promoting until my final breath.
- The first video is 3-minutes long and was posted by The Guardian five days ago. It features a young woman who is exceptionally well-known by billions of people in every corner of the world.
- The second video is 15-minutes, was published today by the World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay and features yours truly. The Monterey, CA chapter is one of 90 WACA Chapters in the USA -- with a total membership of around 50,000 people.
This first video features a concise, urgent message from Greta Thunberg -- a sincere message that provides an ideal, highly-relevant, introduction to my urgent appeal for jumpstarting the most crucial "conversation" in the history of humanity -- the one about connecting the dots to our future as a species.
In the fifteen-minute video below, I pick up where Greta leaves off -- in an effort to help humans throughout the world catch the vision for how we might replace our highly destructive and unsustainable "system" of living on this planet.
In the above video, Greta explains why we must take urgent action throughout the world, whereas my fifteen minutes (below) is devoted to promoting a vision of just how that action might look -- and how we can raise the chances for that desperately needed action by simply influencing the world to start talking about it.

SOS Memo #84: If I had just eighteen minutes to live...
With the title phrase above, I am reminded of the urgency expressed in the final final chapter of our book. Chapter 15 is entitled "Jolted Into Thinking Differently" and it's high time we started doing just that. Here are the first few paragraphs from Chapter 15 of Outcry:
Back in 2018, when I first began trying to envision a future way of life for humanity that would give us the best possible chance to right our ship and return to living sustainably with nature, I knew that it was a longshot -- and that whatever conclusions I drew would likely be met with a combination of resistance, skepticism and ridicule.
That's why, throughout this book, we have been careful not to suggest that our giant, Great Big Northern living corridor idea would ever be built exactly as we have envisioned it -- rather, we have constantly suggested that the very idea could help spark a serious global conversation on the topic of quickly learning how to live sustainable lives.
We figured all along that it would take some kind of international disaster or crisis to jolt us into thinking seriously about making major changes in the way we live -- changes that nature is constantly demanding. I always thought that the crisis that might provide that jolt would be an Earthquake, a volcanic eruption, a superstorm that destroys the world's largest city (Shanghai) -- or perhaps a collision with a giant asteroid that would end all life on half of the planet.
I never imagined that the jolting crisis would be started by a novel virus in a wild animal awaiting slaughter in a wet market in China -- a virus that quickly morphed into one of the largest pandemics in the history of the world.
The Bottom Line. The primary theme throughout our book and all of my SOS Memos is the urgent necessity of replacing our overall "system" of living -- with one that is capable of existing indefinitely in harmony with nature.
I am pleased to report that Greta is also talking about the necessity of "system" change. At the 1:18 point of her video above, she stated:
If you read through the current best available science, you realize that the climate and ecological crisis cannot be solved without system change. That's no longer an opinion, that's a fact!
The climate crisis is only part of a bigger sustainability crisis. For too long, we have been distancing ourselves from nature, mistreating the planet, our only home -- living as if there was no tomorrow.
In closing, a few more words on buying lots of "stuff" this time of year. As I mentioned in my SOS Memo last week, some of you may be wondering what will happen to our economy if we all stopped giving each other "stuff" for Christmas, birthdays, and other annual events.
You should not worry, because it may be necessary for our current economic system to fail -- so that we will be motivated to create a new way of keeping score -- one that will answer first to Mother Nature.

PS: My first blog on the crucial topic of totally reinventing our civilization was posted 9-21-18 and heads the list below. It was all about GRATOLA, an acronym that refers to a "green region" corridor running from Atlanta to Los Angeles.
Since then, I have posted almost 100 additional pieces on that topic, including this one on 9-4-19 in which I introduced the GBN (Great Big Northern) -- one 25-mile wide corridor along the USA's northernmost border that would theoretically be capable of sustainably housing ALL 300+ million Americans in an area the size of Oregon.
As always, I will continue to focus on this crucial topic - in my research, my writing and my speaking.
