SUMMER 2018
Georgia CASA Conference on Aug. 4th
You don't want to miss the Georgia CASA Conference coming up on Saturday, August 4th at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel & Convention Center! This year's keynote speaker is Michaela Pereira, host of HLN's 'Michaela.' A news personality who is based in Los Angeles, Michaela is active in several community organizations working with at-risk children and youth.

Over 20 workshops, in three workshop blocks, will be offered on various child welfare related topics that will be sure to enhance your skills - whether you are a CASA volunteer, staff member, board member or other child welfare professional. Workshops will include Cultural Humanity: I Don't See Color, led by Georgia CASA staff member Lafayette Young, the ever popular Ask the Judges Panel and many more! Come ready to be inspired at the Opening Session and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, where several awards will be given. You will also have the opportunity during the day to engage and network with fellow child welfare advocates from across the state.

Registration will be open through July 25th!

Inspiring Works across the Child Welfare Community

In June, the 26th annual Celebration of Excellence was held in Atlanta. The event celebrated the educational achievements of youth in foster care in the state who have graduated from high school and college. Over the years, youth who have had CASA volunteers have greatly benefited from the educational advocacy of their CASA volunteers. Take a moment to watch this video taken at the Celebration of Excellence.

Two awardees for the 2018 Chief Justice Hines Advocacy Award were nominated by people associated with CASA. Demetria Campbell, a Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) case manager in Colquitt County, was given high praise for the work she does everyday with children, families and CASA volunteers. Click here to watch a video about Demetria.

Christopher Hempfling, a Special Assistant Attorney General (SAAG) in Rockdale County, was given high praise for his work on behalf of children in the county. Additionally, he will be a workshop presenter at the upcoming Georgia CASA Conference.  Click here to watch a video about Christopher.

Welcome to Deidre Hollands, Georgia CASA's Program Operations Director as of August 1st

We welcome Deidre Hollands to the staff of Georgia CASA! She will serve as the new Program Operations Director beginning August 1st.

Deidre is no stranger to the CASA organization in Georgia, having served in Cherokee County as a CASA volunteer in 2000, a CASA volunteer coordinator for two years, a CASA director for 10 years, and, for the last four years, as the founding Executive Director of The Children's Haven, a center for family visitation, the local CASA program, and a convening and collection space for the larger community interested in supporting children and families in child welfare.

Deidre is widely known across the CASA network for sharing her CASA leadership expertise. She also previously served as an affiliate CASA director representative on the Georgia CASA board. Deidre's natural ability of engaging others in the CASA mission is contagious. As a life-long victim advocate, Deidre's work is driven by her commitment and compassion for children and families. She has been at the forefront of local and state initiatives that seek to strengthen the leadership within the CASA network, has championed efforts that recognize and recruit CASA volunteers, and has informed and pushed for training and support that improves quality advocacy.

Deidre will lead comprehensive affiliate support and services for the CASA network to improve quality advocacy and effectiveness, as well as foster meaningful relationships and collaboration with affiliate leadership and state partners to further the mission and integrity of the CASA network.

Deidre and her husband, Charles, live in Canton where they raised their four children. When she isn't working, Deidre can usually be found with her nose in a book or playing with grandchildren. Deidre is also an avid outdoors woman who loves to run, bike, camp, hike and kayak.

Affiliate Program Highlights

Two staff members with CASA of the Augusta Judicial Circuit co-led the Training of the Facilitator in Macon for three days in April. Along with Georgia CASA's Ali Darden as master trainer, Randall Monk and Candyce Rountree helped to conduct the training. This intensive, hands-on training prepares new CASA staff in the state to deliver the pre-service 30-hour CASA volunteer training curriculum.
