Mitra Rahnema
Navigating Race, Authenticity and Power in Ministry

First Unitarian Church of Baltimore
10 W. Franklin Street (at the corner of N. Charles)
Thursday, May 24, 2018 @ 7:00 PM

CENTERING is a project of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association Committee on Antiracism, Anti-oppression & Multiculturalism. The new volume centers the stories, analysis and insight of leaders of color in liberal ministry. Rev. Mitra Rahnema, editor, is a biracial Iranian American, a lifelong Unitarian Universalist who has served congregations in Michigan, California and Kansas, who provides national leadership among UU religious professionals of color.

First Unitarian Church established the Robert and Jean Zoerheide Lecture Series to express the public theology of our congregation. We invite national speakers to present their best thinking about the challenges of our society and the answers they bring to the questions we all face. We feature speakers whose work offers a Unitarian Universalist perspective. We encourage community dialogue to address the ethics and morality of our public discourse. Rahnema's lecture expresses our aspirations for cultural competency & multiculturalism.

May Full Moon Labyrinth Walk: Tuesday, May 29, 8:30 p.m. (Labyrinth). Come enjoy the beauty and peace of the Labyrinth by the light of the full moon! Please be sure to arrive by 9:30 pm at the latest. Everyone is welcome. Weather permitting, this will be an outdoor, drumming walk. The first half hour will be a quiet walk, the remainder drumming, so feel free to bring hand drums and other percussion instruments. Divination practice is welcome - you are welcome to bring your preferred divinatory tool or just stop by for a reading.

Contentment in Everyday Life: Tuesdays, June 5 - 26, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Meditation is making friends with oneself and developing compassion towards others. We can learn to develop friendship with our mind, skill in how to work with speed and difficulty, and a sense of humor. The journey continues by slowly allowing that mind to relax within itself. We let go of struggling with ourselves. We train in being awake in the present moment. This is a program on finding contentment in our daily lives. It is not about becoming a Buddhist but searching into the very techniques which Gotama Buddha employed over 3,000 years ago. Well, it worked for him, and it has worked for many people since him in a variety of spiritual traditions. This is not a religious course, but it is about working with techniques that will allow one to enter one's life more fully through the benefits of a mindfulness practice. Cost: $80 (for all 4 sessions) (shared with UUCF) Register at:

Community News

Frederick County Assessment Survey: Heavy rains and flooding caused widespread damage in Frederick County on May 15 and May 16. In response, County Executive Jan Gardner issued a local  State of Emergency, which authorized County agencies to activate their emergency plans. The local State of Emergency also may allow the County to recover some costs through state and federal programs.

To that end, the Frederick County Division of Emergency Management is collecting information from County residents and businesses on damage and losses suffered as a result of the flooding. The information provided will compiled into a Preliminary Damage Assessment which will be used to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency determine if the county is eligible for any types of federal disaster assistance.

Please visit  www.frederickcountymd.gov/recovery and click on the appropriate survey (damage assessment form) link,  residential or  business, in the menu bar on the left.

If you have any questions or need assistance filling out the form, please call 301-600-1746.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office will be holding a public meeting on its participation in the 287(g) program with ICE. The 287(g) program deputizes local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, making it easier to deport our neighbors and break up families. The meeting will be held at Winchester Hall, 12 E. Church Street, Frederick.

Every year, the county sheriff holds a meeting where information on this program is presented, and he accepts public comment.

The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m., but let's show up early with flags and posters to let our sheriff know that Frederick doesn't want his office to deport our neighbors. Public comment requires registering 10 days in advance, but we will make our voices heard no matter what.

Please stay tuned for any additional details.
