Sustainable Energy Forum for East Africa 2018
wPOWER joined more than 400 participants from government, business and civil society for the Sustainable Energy Forum in Kigali, Rwanda. The forum focused on among other actions, mainstreaming gender equality and women’s empowerment and the urban energy challenges that East African cities face. wPOWER's Strategic Partnerships Director, Linda Davis, PhD, moderated a session on gender and energy and represented the partnership showcasing its best practices in involving women in clean energy entrepreneurship for a better bottom line.

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (GACC) selects first four businesses for Spark+ Investment Readiness Program support
Four businesses in East Africa and Southeast Asia have been selected for support from
Spark+
, a new investment program at
(GACC)
.
The businesses are Sustainable Green Fuel Enterprise (SGFE), NewLight Africa (doing business as Heya!), EcoZoom and KopaGas. Spark+ seeks to build the pipeline of investment-ready companies in the clean cooking sector through operational, strategic and investment advisory support and, where appropriate, direct funding

15 West African Countries Build a Gender-just Energy System
15 West African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo) are now putting women at the forefront of a new energy strategy to develop and enable increased access to climate friendly energy throughout the region.
These countries requested help from the United Nations’ Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) to develop and harness the capacity of the region’s women and men to adopt a gender-responsive approach to improving energy access that combines solutions to both reduce carbon emissions and strengthen capacity to respond to climate change impacts.

Gender-based violence risk is a part of daily life in refugee camps
The risks of gender-based violence (GBV) are increased within the home. Women and girls in humanitarian settings are generally at higher risk for experiencing violence at home by their partners. The failure to produce cooked food due to a shortage of fuel may increase this risk. Distributing clean cookstoves is a potential solution, but there is insufficient evidence about the relationship between clean cookstove use and the incidence and risk of Gender Based Violence.

Faith Nduku Tony, one of SOLARKIOSK’s E-HUBB operators in Kenya, was recently featured on wPOWER’s website to highlight the best practice of SOLARKIOSK empowering women. SOLARKIOSK’s business model focuses on women as key drivers of renewable energy. wPOWER hopes to build the evidence base necessary to advocate for women’s participation in clean energy initiatives and create changes from policymakers and wider sector stakeholders across the world
