AGC MA Honors 34 Members Achieving Excellence in Safety
On June 22nd, 2018, AGC MA held its annual Safety Breakfast, sponsored by AON Construction Services Group at the Westin Copley to honor 34 members achieving excellence in safety for work completed in 2017. Congratulations to all of the winners!
The National Safety Award recognizes firms that have developed and successfully implemented industry-leading safety standards across its portfolio of work. The award program incentivizes construction firms to evaluate and improve existing safety standards. In order to qualify for a Safety Award, an AGC-member firm must participate in the AGC Safety Awards Program for three consecutive years and have either zero lost-day incidence cases, or an average incidence case rate 25% below the average rate of all firms that participate in that particular division.

Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts Creates Endowment for Building and Construction Technology Program at UMass
The University of Massachusetts Amherst has received a $100,000 gift from the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts (AGC MA) of Wellesley, Massachusetts. The gift, also made possible through the Construction Industry Association of Western Massachusetts in Springfield, will provide support for the building and construction technology (BCT) program and its students. The BCT program is part of the department of environmental conservation in the College of Natural Sciences.

AGC MA Chapter 149A Task Force Wants Your Input on
Top Issues for 2018!
The mission of the AGC MA Chapter 149A Task Force is to establish dialogue with state agencies on how their processes, procedures and contracts impact CM at Risk - and to seek a set of standardized 'best practices' with awarding authorities on public sector CMR projects. The Task Force also reviews Chapter 149 delivery procedures as well.
Recent meetings with Awarding Authorities have focused on evolving CM at Risk pre-qualification, procurement, project administration, contract issues and trends.
New AGC MA Chapter 149A Co-Chairs Jon Rich (WT Rich) and James Apodaca (Commodore) want your input on as they formulate the agenda for 2018-2019. We are interested in your thoughts on any agency specific or any issue of general concern with state as well as municipal projects.
In addition
, the Co - Chairs plan to establish a 'two-way" dialogue, so Awarding Authorities will have an opportunity to detail their concerns as well. Please contact Bob Petrucelli if you are interested in joining the Task Force.

Important Change to
Designer Selection Thresholds
Willard Perkins, Executive Director of the State Designer Selection Board (DSB), has asked AGC MA to publicize the following announcement. "
Please be advised that on June 15, 2018, Chapter 113 of the Acts of 2018, An Act Providing for Capital Facility Repairs and Improvements for the Commonwealth, was signed into law by Governor Baker. The legislation in part updated the thresholds for when the designer selection process is to be implemented.
With these changes, effective immediately, a contract for design services is exempt from the selection procedure required if the design fee under the contract is less than $30,000 or the estimated construction cost of the project for which the design services are required is less than $300,000. The changes, which apply to all public agencies, authorities and municipalities in Massachusetts, were made to reflect the loss of purchasing power since the last time they were raised in 1990."

State DEP is Looking for AGC Member Input on New 2020 Solid Waste Master Plan;
AGC MA Launches C&D/Environmental/DEP Liaison Task Force
AGC MA is looking for individuals interested is participating in a new C&D/Environmental/DEP Liaison Task Force. This is the successor to the very active Environmental Committee that existed several years ago to deal with state regs impacting C&D source separation, interaction with DEP, and establishing best practices on recycling, reuse and waste reduction on job-sites.
The new Task Force is in response to an invitation by DEP to AGC MA and our Members to solicit stakeholder input, experiences and advice as the agency begins to draft a new 2020-2030 Solid Waste Master Plan. AGC participated ten years ago when the first SWMP was being developed for 2010 and that interaction spurred the launching of an Environmental Committee. This quickly grew into a highly engaged group of individuals that not only advocated for the construction industry but set new standards and recommended practices for waste management on job sites.

Governor Baker Signs Grand Bargain Legislation
Attached is a summary of House Bill 4640 - the "Grand Bargain" of several pieces of proposed legislation, including Paid Family and Medical Leave and Sunday and Holiday Pay, which were consolidated into one compromise bill and signed into law June 29 by Governor Baker. The compromise was effected to avoid several of the initiatives being place on the ballot this November.
