EXCERPT FROM
"A Battle of the Mind"
by Howard A. Dodge
As a writer your work is never done.
Writing is a battle of thoughts.
You need to learn and have knowledge;
that is better than propaganda or slander.
The more you learn,
the more you advance -
a higher level of the brain,
more sharing of the pain.
I remember a time
when I would stand outside in the rain.
It was hard back then to imagine
things I didn't know about.
Now I have things to look forward to.
I just close my eyes and look for something positive.

FROM THE DEAN
Happy Pentecost! It was my joy to celebrate this great feast day with the Crossing, as they gave thanks for the Spirit's work in their midst and prayed their goodbyes to the Rev. Marsha Hoecker on her last Thursday as their priest. The photo below shows the beautiful community that night.
One of the things I love about the Crossing is their clarity that, every time we g
ather, we
ta
ke responsibility for making space for the Spirit to work. We
do this by expecting the Holy Spirit to show up and creating a space where we honor and welcome one another. At the Crossing, there is a palpable energy from lives transformed by that ongoing practice of intentionally welcoming and being welcomed. Their practice is a great incarnation of what Peter Block sets out as a prerequisite for transformative community:
"We choose depth over speed and relatedness over scale. The question "What do we want to create together?" is deceptively complicated. It implies a long journey crossing social, class, and ins
titutional boundaries. Depth takes time and the willingness to engage. Belonging requires the courage to set aside our usual notions of action and measuring success by the numbers touched. It also means that while we keep our own point of view, we leave our self-interest at the door and show up to learn rather than to advocate. These are the conditions whereby we find new places where we belong." (P. Block, "Community").
Thank you to Marsha Hoecker for her great ministry with the Crossing, and thank you to everyone reading this who is making space today for the Spirit to work through the slow, holy work of welcoming others.
Christ's peace to you,
Amy
