Best Friends, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operates the nation's largest sanctuary for homeless animals; provides adoption, spay/neuter, and educational programs.
Sessions conducted by Best Friends' staff are open to all registered conference attendees. Three of the sessions

Decoding Data: Using Your Stats to Save Lives,
presented by Nikki Kelley (Manager of Network Strategy, Best Friends Animal Society) - What is the one resource every community can use to drive collaboration between public and private partnerships? Data! By evaluating the un-biased data in your community, organizations can work together strategically to increase the quality of life for their pets. Come learn about what data you need, how you can analyze it to identify gaps, and how you can work together to create solutions in your community.
How to Reach Your Target Audience: Digital Strategies for Fundraising, Volunteer Recruitment and Adoption,
presented by Amy Starnes (Director of Digital Fundraising, Best Friends Animal Society) - Every shelter and rescue organization has several target audiences they need to reach. Donors, adopters, lost families, potential volunteers... and that's just a few of them. And there are so many ways you could be reaching them online-- but where are you going to get the best results with the limited time and resources that you have? Learn which channels to focus on and how to get the most out of them. We'll look at email, social media, websites, blogs, and more. You'll leave this session with straightforward cost-effective tips you can put into practice right away to help you reach your goals, so you can get back to your number one priority: taking care of the animals. Help is on the way!
You Don't Need to Be an Attorney to Do This! presented by Richard Angelo (Legislative Attorney, Best Friends Animal Society) -
Learn about legislative and policy tools that can be used to assist you in saving all healthy and treatable animals that come through a shelter. Load your legislative tool kit to identify what policy and legislative changes you may need to discuss with decision-makers in your community, specific topics and tools for lobbying decision makers at local and state levels, common legal and policy hurdles that are barriers to increased lifesaving and how to overcome them. Also discussed will be examples of success from communities that made it happen.

|
Richard Angelo, Jr. is a Legislative Attorney for Best Friends Animal Society. His focus is on Best Friends' work with community cats and promoting legislation that will humanely and directly reduce the killing of cats and dogs in shelters across the country. He was previously a sole practitioner with an office in Davison, MI, focusing on companion animal-related issues and litigation, including defending dangerous dog matters, consulting on alternatives to breed-specific legislation, ownership disputes of companion animals, zoning and ordinance violations regarding companion animals. Richard has spoken on community cat-related matters, dangerous dog laws, and breed-discrimination at numerous national, regional, and local events across the country. He has been a member of the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan since 2001, and has served as a council member of that Section since 2009. He is also a member of the American Bar Association- TIPS Animal Law Committee, and International Law Section, Animal Law Committee, and the National Animal Care and Control Association. Richard resides in Goodrich, MI with his wife, five dogs, and three cats.

Nikki Kelley |
As the Manager of Network Strategy,
Nikki Kelley oversees the Best Friends Network data strategy, grant program, and digital resources. She has a background in math and analysis, and after adopting her first dog in 2008, she decided to leave a consulting career to focus on finding ways to quantify and analyze animal sheltering in the U.S. Since joining Best Friends in 2013, Nikki has used data from network partners throughout the country to quantify the impact of their collective lifesaving work. She enjoys helping network partners use data to analyze and plan programming, and to use data visualization tools to help tell their story. Nikki lives in Nashville, TN with her husband and five rescued animals: 2 spoiled dogs and 3 moody (but lovely) cats.

As the Director of Digital Fundraising at Best Friends Animal Society,
Amy Starnes develops and executes digital fundraising campaigns and strategies that incorporate email, social media, website, and emerging digital channels. She loves using technology to create experiences that are both data-driven and meaningful for donors. Amy has worked in technology for over 15 years. Before joining Best Friends, she led the digital program at the MSPCA-Angell in Boston. Prior to working in animal welfare, she worked for a digital agency managing web projects and also in the healthcare sector, where she was instrumental in the development of innovative email and medical device security systems for prestigious Boston area hospitals. Amy lives in Portland, ME with her husband Elias and their two dogs, Polly and Stella.
