Gan Bet Learns About Abstract Art
Each month in Gan Bet we learn about a new artist and make our own art inspired by the artists. We explore and discuss the techniques and styles of the various artists and use them as we expand our own artistic creativity. This month, Gan Bet had a great time learning about the "Father of Abstract Art," Wassily  Kandinsky and explored his piece  "Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles." We used oil pastels and watercolors to create our own masterpieces. It was wonderful to observe how, although inspired by the same original piece, each child's artwork was uniquely his/her own.

Ganon Gimmel Architects and Engineers
Our Ganon Gimmel architects and engineers built this amazing structure on their own. The structure included five ice skating rinks using true teamwork, artistic vision and such creativity. The children decided to add signs to their structure to help describe what they built. When they noticed our classroom had neon transparent clipboards, one boy said, "Those are perfect for our ice skating rinks!"

Some of the many signs they wrote included "family bathroom, restaurant, elevator, and skating rink". Those who could copy the words, did. Those who could sound out the letters, did. Those who did not feel comfortable writing words drew a picture instead. This is one beautiful example of writing coming naturally in Pre-K. t eachers from other classes and older students passing by our class were blown away by this unique, original creation!

Lower School

STEM in 2nd Grade!
As part of our communities unit, we are incorporating many STEM activities. Students learned all about different structures and what they are made of. They have planned out their own structures that they will create in the Maker's Space next week. Students had to decide which materials would be best to use. Their structures were based on what type of community they would be used for. We can't wait to make our creations come to life!

Sefer Yehoshua in 3D!
Before leading Bnai Yisrael in their historic crossing of the Yarden River, Yehoshua sends 2 spies on a secret mission to scout out the city of Yericho.  Perek bet of Yehoshua describes all of the danger and drama the spies encounter. But, if you want to see  what it might have looked like, you could have stopped by class 4C's classroom this week!  After learning the pesukim, the students of 4C chose and designed the 5 most critical scenes of our perek and built those scenes out of cardboard, labeling each scene with a pasuk that describes the action of those scenes.  This morning,  class 4C proudly and expertly presented their projects to their peers in 4B.

Middle School

Middle School Fashion Show
There was quite a buzz in the air after Tzipi Waltner, CEO of BYRDNYC, addressed our Middle School girls on November 28th.  When we announced that we would be hosting a Fashion Show on December 3rd, many of the students volunteered to bring the event to life. They volunteered for set-up, designing a laser light show for the viewing, and modeling. A dance performance was included as well! The fashions were donated by female headed businesses including BYRD, Three Bows, Mia Mod, Aqua, Necessary Object and Love Ady.

The finale brought the event to a close.  Six eighth graders designed two different YAVNEH skirts. Those same six girls came out on the runway proudly wearing their new Yavneh swag. It was a wonderful evening from start to finish with all Middle School grades participating. Look out for that Yavneh skirt!

Thank you to Morah Jordana Baruchov, Middle School Dean, for contacting the designers and organizing this event which highlighted female entrepreneurship and talent coming to life. This was truly a beautiful way to "see the good" in the way we dress. The runway was a wonderful professional touch. We all enjoyed the program, the snacks and giveaways.

First Debate Team  Meet of the Year
Last week, right before Thanksgiving, our Middle School debate team traveled to Kushner to participate in this year's first debate meet. The resolution was: The United States government should require all students attending public school to be vaccinated, without exception. Seventh and eighth grade competitors thoroughly researched both sides of the resolution as team pairs participated as both affirmative and negative. The students on either side worked together to formulate counter-arguments for each of their positions, and Mrs. Borenstein and Mrs. Kira served as coaches and chaperones. More to come on our next debate, in January--stay tuned for the new resolution!
