Juanita Powell-Brunson ('06), Deputy Director of New York Times Newsroom *
Juanita Powell-Brunson, 2006 alumna of the Nyack College Organizational Management program, made headlines where "all the news is fit to print." She was a member of Cohort 359 who earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Nyack a dozen years ago with distinction

A New Mantle for
Dr. Wanda (Haggerty) Walborn,
CWM (NC '84, ATS '03) *
On April 29, family and friends of Dr. Wanda Walborn gathered to witness the opening of a new chapter in her life and ministry. A consecration service was held at Risen King Alliance Church in New City, NY for the beloved professor and Nyack College Director of Spiritual Formation. This long awaited day came for the tireless, selfless, single-minded servant leader who has not wavered from her purpose-driven life while earning her D.Min. (Western Seminary), M.Div. (Alliance Theological Seminary) and BA (Nyack).
The Christian and Missionary Alliance defines consecration as "the public recognition and affirmation of God's call to women for a lifetime of service. This call, distinct from human vocational choice, is exercised through God-given and Holy Spirit empowered giftedness for an effective witness about Jesus Christ and proclamation of biblical truth for the purpose of reconciling people to God and equipping God's people to fulfill the Great Commission to 'make disciples of all nations.'" Following a C&MA consecration ceremony, women carry the distinction of, Consecrated Woman in Ministry (CWM).

Dean Velez (NC '96) Named CCCU Commissioner *
Nyack College Rockland campus Dean of Students Wanda Velez was recently named to the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Commission for Chief Student Development Officers (CSDO). Commissioners plan the annual meeting, advise the president and CCCU staff on professional development opportunities and research topics and coordinate surveys.
Commission members reflect the diversity of CCCU schools by geographic region, gender, race, denomination and institution size. Dean Velez's three-year term begins July 1, 2018 and is renewable once at the discretion of the CCCU president.

Alumnus Debuts in Sports Car Club of America Race *
Hat juggling should be added to the list of Frank Dalene's talents because he wears so many.
For starters, the 1977 Nyack College alumnus is president and CEO of Telemark, Inc., an award-winning luxury home construction company. Frank is an ardent advocate for green technology, evidenced by his role as founder and chairman of the Hamptons Green Alliance and as founder, president and CEO of Carbon Factor, Inc. In addition, he's been a member of numerous construction industry, civic and philanthropic boards, as well as a conference presenter in the U.S. and abroad who has several published articles.
While his wife, Gwen, along with their daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, fuel his love tank, there is one other public passion that gets Frank Dalene revved up: auto racing. In fact, he fastened on a helmet and was behind the wheel of car #82, a TA2 Camaro in the Trans Am Series that aired on the Sunday, July 1 edition of CBS Sports.

Jackson Engine #3's Emily Sigmon *
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" How many times have you heard a little boy answer, "A firefighter!" Well, 2017 Nyack College alumna Emily Sigmon may not have made that declaration when she was a little girl, but today only active female member of Nyack Fire Department's-Jackson Fire Engine #3.
Nyack 2011 alumnus Jamel Wright, made her aware of the firefighting opportunity where he also volunteers. Emily says, "The men who work at the firehouse I am a part of, as well as the surrounding companies in Nyack, have been incredibly supportive of my process in becoming a firefighter." She points out, "I was pleasantly surprised by the respect and welcome I received knowing that I was entering a realm that is primarily male." She adds, "I would like to thank the women who blazed the trail before me. Even though I have not met them or have not had the opportunity to serve alongside them, these women made a great impact on me."

2017 Alumna of the Year Wins Maryland Race *
Abena Affum-McAllister (NC '07) was elected chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Central Committee in a race last month. Abena is also the president and founder of Women of Action Maryland. At Homecoming 2017, accompanied by her husband,
Willie McAllister (NC '05), and their daughter, Abena, a communications major who graduated
cum laude, was presented with an Alumna of the Year Award in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to society.

Carol Ann Freeman: TESOL Adjunct
Brings English to Hungary Camp
*
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is
Carol Ann Freeman's sweet spot. Her 23 trips to Hungary since 2007 are proof of it! The Nyack alumna,
(ADCP '04; MA '08; MS '16), and former executive assistant to President Michael Scales, is responsible for developing the curriculum and training teachers for the English camp hosted by the Debrecen Baptist Church in Debrecen, Hungary. Her educational mission was recently featured in
Hajdú-Bihar Napló, a daily newspaper in northeastern Hungary. English is taught by volunteers using skits, games, crafts and singing.
Chloe Nevill, (NC '13) alumna and a current Nyack College adjunct music professor, served as the music teacher who also wrote original pieces.
Carol Ann explains, "My grandparents came from Szúcs, Hungary and when I was a child, they told me about their country. Even though I had never been there, I loved the country they described in their stories. I knew I wanted to teach English in Hungary and was fortunate to make connections with Debrecen Talentum Baptist School."
She adds, "Nyack is a big part of the success of this English camp. I am so thankful for Nyack College and its programs that prepared me to do this ministry. The English camp has the reputation of being a quality, fun and well-run program. Especially appreciated is the ongoing commitment to this partnership; and Nyack College--through its participating faculty and staff, including Dr. Marie Kenote and Mrs. Bonita D'Amil--has been part of that partnership."

Nyack Literati Celebrate 50 Years of "The Fine Print" *
The staff of Nyack's student-edited literary journal, "The Fine Print," marked a milestone in May with the release of its 50th anniversary of publishing poetry, short fiction, essays, photography and fine art created by students, faculty and staff. Work submitted comes from English majors as well as students in other disciplines. Dr. Jonathan Gates, director of the Nyack College Honors Program and English professor, has been the faculty advisor for the last 16 years. He comments, "One of the privileges of being "The Fine Print" adviser is the opportunity to work with and showcase talented young people who are practicing their art, some with limited experience and others with considerable practice. When their work is featured in the literary journal, we have a tremendous display of the diversity of God-given imagination and craft."

WNYK Airs Sermons by ATS Alumnus Dr. Michael Plunket *
During the month of June, WNYK 88.7FM aired sermons from the "Knowing God" series taught by Dr. Michael Plunket, (ATS, D.Min. '14), senior pastor of Risen King Alliance Church in New City, NY. Dr. Plunket is an adjunct professor at Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Lisa, have been speakers for the Nyack College Office of Spiritual Formation's Deeper Life Series and instructors for the Empower program for women held at Alliance Theological Seminary.

The mileage on his education spans more than decades; his has been a literal transatlantic journey. And there are no signs of him slowing down.

The Many Hats of Frances Pratt, '15
One of Nyack's 2015 honorary degree recipients and the town of Nyack's beloved Frances Pratt and her many fabulous hats is the subject of the summer exhibition at the museum of the Historical Society of the Nyacks. The exhibition opens on June 2, 2018 from 1 to 5 p.m. at 50 Piermont Avenue, Nyack, NY 10960.
Born in South Carolina, Frances Pratt arrived in Nyack as a young bride and has lived here ever since. She worked at Nyack Hospital for over 50 years, serving as Head Nurse in the Emergency Room. When she retired, the hospital created a scholarship and a peace rose garden in her honor. She received an honorary doctorate from Nyack College consistent with her earlier ambition to be a missionary. Mrs. Pratt became president of the Rockland NAACP in 1981.

ances always appears in an eye-catching hat, seemingly a new one on each occasion. She credits her husband Marshall Pratt as the designer of these hats that are each coordinated with her outfits. She has a collection of 250 hats, some of which will be in the exhibit along with information about her community service and her distinctive words of wisdom known to many as "Prattisms."

Athletes in Action Name Jason Crafton (NC '03) as Summer Basketball Coach in New Zealand *
Non-profit organization Athletes in Action (AIA) has chosen Nyack's Men's Basketball Head Coach Jason Crafton to lead the team that will travel to Auckland, New Zealand this summer. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and Division II student athletes from across the country will compete in six to eight games against club and university teams during their stay from July 16 to August 11. In addition to building relationships with fellow athletes, team members will conduct clinics and support local campus ministry outreaches.

Christopher Crutch (NC '98)
and Ruth Heather Crutch (NC '98) gathered with their daughters, Symphony and Willow, along with extended family and friends at Memorial Park in Nyack to celebrate the life of their precious daughter, Sterling Amariah Crutch.
Chris, fondly known to many as "Bishop," demonstrated why he earned that moniker as he touched hearts with sentiments that evoked both tears and laughter. Ruth Heather, a former Nyack Rockland Associate Director of Admissions and Database Manager, shared the following expression of gratitude:
"When we entered the doors of Nyack College almost 20 years ago we became part of a community that we most fully experienced and appreciated on February 29, 2008 when our middle daughter Sterling Amariah Crutch unexpectedly passed away. In two words, our Nyack College community "showed up" for us. Earlier on in our grief journey we resolved that there would be no other place nor people where and with whom we would have wanted to share such a loss.
And so it was, on February 28, this year, as our family celebrated 10 years of God's grace, we opened our lives again to the community that chose us in life and death. Once again, our Nyack College tribe "showed up" for us. Friends turned family released a lantern in our daughter's honour and in praise to God proving again that "community" is one of the many things at which Nyack College excels."

Remembering Dr. Thomas H. Stebbins
(NC '56) *
Nyack College alumnus Dr. Thomas H. Stebbins passed away on February 15. Dr. Stebbins was the former executive vice president and COO of Evangelism Explosion International.
Nyack College is where Dr. Stebbins met and fell in love with Nyack alumna, Donna Stadsklev (1953). The two were married in 1954 and of that union became the parents of four children-Jennifer, Jeff, John and Janice. Son Jeff lovingly shared a reflection on his father's life with these words: "For more than 60 years, Dad was passionate about seeing as many people as possible put their faith in Jesus, have assurance of eternity in Heaven, and grow into mature, reproducing believers. Many thousands of Vietnamese, Chinese, Americans and others will be in Heaven partly because Dad surrendered his life and honed his evangelistic skills to become an effective servant in God's hands. Part of his effectiveness derived from Mom's unwavering love, trust and support. We kids know that, without Mom, Dad could have done little that he did."
Missionaries to Vietnam for two decades, Thomas and Donna Stebbins were named Nyack College Alumni of the Year in 1999 for their faithful service to The Christian and Missionary Alliance. At Nyack's 2008 Homecoming, the lives of alumni who were martyred in 1968 while serving in Vietnam were honored; Dr. Stebbins's sister, Ruth Stebbins Thompson and her husband C. Edward Thompson are among those whose names were engraved on a memorial bench installed at Shuman Hall. In 2011, the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (also known as Tin Lanh Church) celebrated its 100th anniversary in Da Nang City. Dr. Stebbins, who was born in Hue, Vietnam was invited to speak at the centennial festivities.

'65 Daniel Ward
, a School of Music alumnus, retired in December 2017 after completing 40 years of service as organist at Holy Cross Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Wheat Ridge, CO. Hundreds filled the church on January 14 to help celebrate this milestone for both the organist and the church. A musically festive Sunday morning service was followed by a luncheon which included awarding Mr. Ward an honorary doctorate and designating him organist emeritus. He was presented with various mementos and gifts.
Mr. Ward's professional musical background is in piano, organ and music education. He completed a master's degree in music education in 1972 at Temple University. From 1965 until 1974, he taught music in public school and later invented spatial-numeric ways of visualizing musical tone patterns to better illustrate the math and science logic of musical design. He comments that "Too many dismiss music as arbitrary and haphazard, without this understanding. A parallel can be drawn in the need for biblical and other kinds of study in bringing rhyme and reason to the 'music' of our lives."
'67 Wayne R. Dyer
is serving as Vice President of Strategic Alliances at Pillar College. Wayne was Nyack's class president in 1967.
'83 Ann McCarthy
received the "Ignatian Educator Award" from Xavier High School in 2016 having been nominated by a former student. She also received the award for "Middle School Teacher of the Year" in 2012 from the Lutheran School Association. Ann is the middle school teacher at Leif Ericson Day School in Brooklyn, NY.
'90 Alison Feliciano
is the Democratic candidate for Georgia House District 19. Alison of Dallas defeated Nigel Sims of Hiram. She will face the winner of the July 24 runoff between contenders Paulette Rakestraw and Joseph Gullett.
'92 Elimelec Cordero
has been blessed with the love of his life and two amazing children. He has participated in various areas of church ministry and works with high school students in Oak Park, IL. He is also president of the Hispanic Bible School in Chicago. Elimelec thanks Nyack for his great college education.
'96 Janice Scordato
accepted a position at America's Keswick, where she will work in the addiction's recovery program for women.
'98 NC, '05 ATS Stephen W. Pogue was the guest speaker honored at the Messiah Baptist Church Men's Ministry event, as Man of the Year 2018 on March 31. The Hon. Eliot L. Engel of New York stated, "Rev. Stephen Pogue is a pillar in our and every community in which he has served. His work has been an inspiration and it is my honor to congratulate him on receiving this wonderful recognition."

'01 Rashidi Aikens
is the head coach of the women's basketball program at Nyack College. Rashidi was formerly the assistant women's basketball coach at Nyack from 2002-2012 and served in the same role with LIU Post University the past two seasons. He was also head coach for the Mercy College women's basketball team from 2012-2016.

'05 Tiffany Burnett
was featured in VoyageMIA Magazine's section on "Rising Stars" in Boca Raton, FL. A computer science major, Tiffany was a student worker during her studies and joined the full-time staff as administrative assistant in the Office of Student Development. The New York City transplant is currently making a splash in Florida with her self-titled graphic design and branding firm, Tiffany Burnett. '06 Jeremiah P. Henderson, (pictured right), Air National Guard Sergeant, earned a Minute Man Award for being the Outstanding Air National Guard Chaplain Assistant of the Year. Jeremiah serves as superintendent of Chaplain Operations at the 109th Airlift Wing at the Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, NY.

'06 Patricia Pena
is an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church and is serving as senior pastor of two congregations in Boston, MA. She was selected as Dominican Exemplary Woman of the Year by the Dominican festival in Boston and received several awards including one from Boston's mayor, Marty Walsh.
'07 NC, '13 ATS
Rafael "Macho" Lara
released his debut album, "Worship Project: Vol.1," this spring. During his time at Nyack, Macho served as a worship team leader for the Office of Spiritual Formation. While leading audiences in corporate worship over the past 20 years, it was always his dream to add his voice to the roster of Christian recording artists. Jesus' question, "Who do you say that I am?" is answered in several of the songs. For more information on this powerful new release, click here.
'08 (MBA) Lami Adamu
was a member of the Nigerian soccer team that represented the country in the 1990s and a member of the Super Falcons at the 2000 Olympic Games in Syndey, Australia.
After earning a bachelor's degree in 2005 from Bloomfield College, Lami earned her master's degree from Nyack in 2008. She then started her own suya and kilishi (skewer meat) business to "give Nigerians here in the USA the authentic taste of home." Read more about Lami and her business venture.
'09 Caleb Masters
was promoted to assistant bookstore manager at Bookmarks. Caleb lived internationally for 16 years in Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea, most recently teaching English in Goyang City in the Republic of Korea. He has retail and book experience, having served as the Nonfiction Director and Trainer at Edward McKay Used Books for six years before working overseas.

'12 NC, '16 AGSC Josué Calderon
was installed as assistant pastor of Second Avenue Church in Manhattan on July 1 by Rev. Jorge Cuevas, Spanish Eastern District Superintendent of The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA).
After becoming an accredited C&MA worker in March 2018, Josué joined the pastoral staff at Second Avenue Church, where Rev. Michael Rivera is the senior pastor. Prior to his new role, he also served at C&MA churches in White Plains and Queens, NY and in Kissimmee, FL, including the role of corporate secretary of the District Executive Committee. He was also employed at Nyack College in the Office of College Relations as manager of annual gift programs after serving for a time as an admissions counselor in Nyack's Office of Admissions on the Rockland County campus.

'12 (OM) Ralph Coates
, most recently the program coordinator and center director for Marist College's Upward Bound program, was named director of SUNY Orange's Liberty Partnership Program (LPP) in February. In this new role, Ralph oversees a collaborative program in partnership with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and the Boys and Girls Club of Newburgh. Ralph is pursuing his master's degree in public administration from Marist College. Read more.
'12 NC, '17 ATS Shaun Jacobs-Patterson
was named senior pastor of Triumphant Life Community Church in Trenton, NJ. He will assume the leadership role previously held by Bishop Herbert Bright, who recently retired. In Nyack's Division of Student Success, Shaun serves as the Testing, Tutoring and Assessment Coordinator and a HEOP adviser. Sean says, "My passion has always been the community. As we embark on this new chapter, we will be a church in the community for the community. That will include having outreach programs that meet the needs of the community and surrounding areas. The only way we can achieve that goal is by showing the love of Jesus and through the direction of the Holy Spirit." Read more.

'12 Hazel Keys
earned a Master of Arts degree from Wesley Theological Seminary at the 136th Commencement ceremony on May 7 at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
'12 (ATS) Dimas Salaberrios
was the Book Impact recipient for "Street God," at the 6th Annual KLOVE Fan Awards at The Grand Ole Opry on May 27 in Nashville, TN.
'14 Amanda Halter
earned a master's degree in English language and literature from Friedrich-Schiller-Universitat Jena (Germany). While studying and living in Jena for the past two years, Amanda has become active in local middle and high schools by starting after school English clubs and guest lecturing in English classes. Her current plans are to stay in Jena and continue to make classroom appearances, play soccer for FC Carl-Zeiss, teach a bachelor seminar at FSU and set her sights to starting work on her dissertation.
'18 Benjamin Riley,
an accomplished acoustic and classical guitarist, singer, songwriter, writer, presenter and music educator, is the College Music Symposium content editor for the summer and 2018-2019 academic year at the College Music Society. In this role, Ben will be receiving article submissions, communicating with component editors, publishing articles and managing the Symposium website.

Alaster Cove Dwinell Jenkins was born on
October 15, 2017. Mike and Bethany (Ilsley) Jenkins '98 and older brother, Talon Jenkins (3), were thrilled to meet him. Alaster is strong, healthy and a joyful addition to the world and our home. Bethany calls Alaster their Psalm 91 and rainbow baby boy.

and husband, Barry, welcomed baby girl Everleigh Ruth on March 4. Everleigh joins siblings Cadence (6), Carrigan (4) and Tobias (2).

'09 Jaclyn (Campbell)
and '10 Josh Blanchard welcomed baby boy Ezra Robert on May 23 at 3:54 p.m. Ezra weighed 8 lbs., 9 oz. and measured 21 inches long. Ezra joins big brother Elijah.

'39 Gertrude Hodge
passed away on April 20 at the age of 99. Gertrude married George R. Hodge of East Topsham on April 20, 1940 and made her home in Topsham until her passing. She was employed by the State of Vermont Department of Public Safely working in civil defense for 20 years as the sole female training officer. After her retirement from the State, she was a disaster reservist with FEMA and appointed by the president to the executive reserve. She was a lay minister for the Methodist Church for 60 years.
In her later years, Gertrude's interest in antiques and collectables grew. She was the owner and operator of "Hodge Podge," buying and selling at flea markets, auctions, East Barre Antique Mall, Colonial Plaza and wherever she could park her car.
Gertrude had a strong commitment to volunteerism. She served on a multitude of boards, received many awards and held offices at the state and national level.
When asked the question, "How would you like to be remembered?" Her answer was "Being a good mother, served my state and the people, not having wasted my life, never had a job which I didn't like, never been unhappy." Read more about Gertrude

'43 Elizabeth B. (MacLellan) Brokaw
, 97, passed into the presence of her Savior on February 10. Elizabeth met the love of her life, John "Jack" Brokaw during her time at Nyack College. The couple was married on May 30, 1944 at Mountainside Union Chapel in Mountainside, NJ. While Jack served as a pastor throughout New York and New Jersey, Betty served alongside him. She worked with children, headed women's ministries in several churches and hosted countless dinners and church functions. She and Jack became foster parents in New York and over the years, took care of more than 90 children ranging in age from newborn to 12 years old. Betty was a talented seamstress and painter. She was always willing to help her friends and neighbors.

joined her husband, Elmer J Sahlberg '48, in heaven on April 5. She was 96, and passed peacefully at home with her four children, Dave, Dale, Evelyn and Esther. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.
Corrine and Elmer went to Thailand in 1950 as missionaries under The Christian and Missionary Alliance. They were true missionary pioneers, living the small town of Nongkai, in a home with no electricity or running water, for eight years. Elmer traveled a lot in those years to remote villages, and Corrine taught both women and children Bible studies in Nongkai and raised each child until they went off to boarding school, originally in South Vietnam and later in Malaysia.
Even though they retired, Elmer continued to make 13 more trips back to Thailand, while Corrine stayed at home and at age 70, wrote a book about her adventures as a missionary wife, called "Please Leave Your Shoes at the Door."

'47 Jeanette Schmidt
passed into the presence of the Lord on March 24, 2018 at the age of 93. After graduating from Nyack, Jeanette worked for Missionary Aviation Fellowship, Nyack College and Deloitte, Haskins & Sells. She was a member of Grace Bible Fellowship Church in Nazareth, PA.
'55 Elmer J. Whitbeck, 92, passed away on March 21. Rev. Whitbeck was a minister to many churches in South Dakota, Wyoming and Kansas. He served as a counselor at Back to the Bible Broadcast, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Lincoln Berean Church, a WW II United States Marine Corps veteran serving in the Marine Air Warning Squadron 11, a graduate of Nyack College with a THB degree and an ordained conservative Baptist minister. He was married for 68 years to
Mary Ruth (Bell) Whitbeck (NC '50).
'68 David M. Ballou
departed this life on June 27. After graduating from Nyack, David
spent most of his life in Ulster County, NY where he pastored Lattingtown Baptist Church for nearly 50 years. Dave taught in the Marlboro and Newburgh school systems for a short time, and was very active with the Milton Engine Company as a member and chaplain.
Dave lost his wife of 49 years,

'76 David L. Kindstedt
, 63, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. David worked as a shipper/receiver at Carbon Technology for over twenty-five years. He enjoyed traveling throughout New England and New York with his wife, Barbara. He also enjoyed scuba diving, playing the piano, listening to classical and religious music and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a devout Christian and member of the Greater Rhode Island Baptist Temple family where he often played piano.
'82 NC, '86 ATS Jonathan S. Bailey passed away peacefully on June 10. He served the Milford, CT community as the pastor for Calvary Alliance Church for the last 31 years. A preacher of the gospel who loved and always saw the good in people the way God saw them, he will be remembered as being very compassionate and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots, playing basketball, working out at the YMCA, gardening and keeping the church looking beautiful.
'12 (AGSC) Debra Connery Smith
passed away on February 18 at the age of 47. Debra worked as the administrative assistant of the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program at Nyack after graduating from the program in 2012. She went on to become a therapist at Redeemer Counseling in Manhattan, where she earned the hours to obtain her license as a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). She continued on at Nyack as a guest lecturer and co-taught the premarital counseling course for a number of years. Debra had a huge heart of compassion, enthusiasm and love for Jesus, people and the field of MFT.
