  :

Happy Memorial Day to all as we enter the long weekend! Let's make it a point to stop for a few quiet minutes on Monday to remember all those who fought and gave their lives in service for our country.

As usual, we had another busy week here at school. Our 6th grade students entertained their grandparents with a series of short plays today. Their hard work showed and all in attendance enjoyed their performances. We also had a number of field trips this week and details can be found further down in the newsletter.

The 8th grade students enjoyed their class trip to High Meadows yesterday and are preparing to take their final exams next week. Their Mass of Thanksgiving and Pinning Ceremony with Bishop Mitch will take place later next week where they will receive their official St. Michael's Academy pin. They will soon become part of our 9th graduating class from St. Michael's Academy!

Enjoy a nice weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

From the Classroom of Ms. Synan - PreK-4B

Pre- K 4 B Learns About Insects!

The students in Ms. Synan's Pre-K 4 B class have been learning all about the world of insects. They have used nature, open-ended academic activities, storybooks, finger plays and songs to help their learning. One of the students' favorite songs is entitled "We're Going On A Bug Hunt."

To add to the fun and learning, the students created their own "We're Going On A Bug Hunt" storybooks. They included a picture of their own face on a bug hunt boy/girl bookmark to guide them through the song. The students proudly shared their storybooks in the classroom and at home!

 8th Grade Class Trip

High Meadows - What A Blast!

The 8th grade students had the perfect weather for their class trip. And guess where they went?  They spent a fabulous day at High Meadows taking advantage of all the fantastic opportunities for fun that they offer!

 Grandparent Event

Grade 6 Ready For Broadway

The 6th grade students entertained their grandparents this morning with "Once Upon A Time At St. Michael's Academy."  The performance included six short plays all centering around fairly tales and included, "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs," "Cinderella Bigfoot," "Peddlar Polly and the Story Stealer," "The Fairy Godmother's Assistant," "Hansel and Gretel," and "The Prinipal's New Clothes."

 Kindergarten Field Trip

Kindergarten Goes To Lupa Zoo

The Kindergarten students had a wonderful time at The Lupa Zoo on Thursday. They saw a black Himalayan bear being brushed, two peacocks showing off their beautiful colors, and silly monkeys.  Some very brave children held a red banded snake from Africa. Sadly, the giraffe was a little under the weather and stayed in his barn.

Mr. Lupa commented on how well behaved the St. Michael's children were, and invited them back anytime!

 1st Grade Field Trip

There's A Lot To See And Do At The Big Y!

The 1st grade students had a blast during their field trip to the Allen and Cooley Big Y.  They were able to scan some check-out items, decorate their own cupcakes, watch a pizza being made (and take it back to school with them) and even pet a HUGE lobster named Larry!

Grade 5 Field Trip

Grade 5 Steps Back In Time

Our 5th grade students took a step back in time today as they visited Old Sturbridge Village on their field trip.

The day started with  a two hour agriculture tour and the student were excited to see many animals out & about.  They even got to meet April & Mason, 2 newborn calves!

 Peep Peep!

Did You Hear A Peeping Sound?

If you happened to walk by Mrs. Ruell's Kindergarten class, you were hearing things. The class is peeping right along after hatching 20 chicks!!  This wonderful project started right after the spring break and after 21 days of waiting and watching, the process began.

We were all greatly surprised at the number of chicks that hatched from our tiny incubator.  The class is enjoying naming them and watching their daily changes. The miracle of life is an amazing thing to observe here at St. Michael's.

 Grade 1 Butterflies

Born To Fly Free

Our 1st grade students have spent the last month learning about the life cycle of a butterfly.   All butterflies have "complete metamorphosis." That means that in order to grow into an adult, they go through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

After observing all four stages in the classroom, it was time for the beautiful "Painted Ladies" to be released.  The students are hoping they will see them again outside some day!

Red Nose Day

Where Did You Get That Red Nose?!

Ms. Synan's Pre-K 4B class celebrated "Red Nose Day" on May 24, 2018. Camden's Mom (Mrs. Boduck) brought in Red Noses for everyone in Pre-K 4B. Red Nose Day's mission is to end child poverty, one nose at a time, and was founded by Comic Relief. People wear red noses to bring people together, break down barriers, and remind us of the power of laughter.

Springfield College

And Speaking Of Fitness...Want To Participate?

Hello,

My name is Elizabeth O'Neill. I am a professor in Exercise Science at Springfield College. My research team and I are conducting a study investigating the impact of combined resistance and aerobic exercise on cardiovascular variables.

We are in need of participants. We are hoping you might be willing and interested in helping us out by serving as a participant.

We are looking for individuals between the ages of 30-60 who are recreationally active.
If you do not get equal to or more than 150 min a week of moderate intensity or equal to or more than 75 min of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise, and do not get at least 2 days of strength training per week during the previous 3 months you could potentially qualify.

You would only need to complete 3 sessions, the first session will last approximately 1 hour and the second and third session will last approximately 2 hours. During the first session you will complete paperwork which will determine if you qualify for the study, and if you qualify you will complete some resistance exercises to determine the correct training load for sessions two and three. During sessions two and three, you will complete a bout of aerobic exercise (walking on a treadmill) lasting 30 minutes and complete four resistance exercises (2 sets of 12 repetitions each).

This study is informative for you as you will learn about your cardiovascular health, body composition, and muscular strength. We thank you for your time and consideration.

If interested please email me or my research assistant:

  Food  For Thought

"Love Mary! She is lovable , faithful, constant. She will never let herself be outdone in love, but will ever remain supreme. If you are in danger, she will hasten to free you. If you are troubled, she will console you. If you are sick, she will bring you relief. If you are in need, she will help you. She does not look to see what kind of person you have been. She simply comes to a heart that wants to love her."
