CONVERSION - What does this mean?

A Note From Pastor Linda

Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord... (Acts 9:1)

...and immediately Saul began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, "He is the Son of God." All who heard him were amazed...
(Acts 9:20-21a)

Dear CHURCH,

We return to the Book of Acts, Chapter 9, and enter the story of Saul's conversion; changed from a man who persecuted people of the Way (Christ-followers) to a proclaimer of Jesus as the Messiah.   What does it mean to be converted?

CS Lewis writes this about conversion to being a follower of Jesus:
"If conversion to Christianity makes no improvement in a person's outward actions - if they continue to be just a snobbish or spiteful or envious or ambitious as they were before - then I think we must suspect that their 'conversion' was largely imaginary; and after one's original conversion, every time one thinks one has made an advance, that is the test to apply. Fine feelings, new insights, greater interest in 'religion' mean nothing unless they make our actual behavior better; just as in an illness 'feeling better' is not much good if the thermometer shows that your temperature is still going up. In that sense the outer world is quite right to judge Christianity by its results. Christ told us to judge by results. A tree is known by its fruit; or, as we say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. When we Christians behave badly, or fail to behave well, we are making Christianity unbelievable to the outside world. The war-time posters told us that Careless Talk costs Lives. It is equally true that Careless Lives cost Talk. Our careless lives set the outer world taking; and we give them grounds for talking in a way that throws doubt on the truth of Christianity itself."

Be the CHURCH- proclaim Jesus- living, loving and serving as Jesus did so that all will know Him!

CHALLENGE: Invite a friend to join you in worship on Sunday- and then stay for the ALL CHURCH Potluck! Hotdogs and chips provided- along with plates and forks! BE THE CHURCH- a place where ALL ARE WELCOME!

Be the CHURCH - invite a neighbor to join you!

Summer Book Club on the Lake!
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Monday, July 25
6:30pm

We will be discussing the book " Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng, which was named Best Book of the Year by NPR, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and is a New York Times Best Seller!

Little Fires Everywhere begins with a house fire and a question: Who set it, and why? The house belongs to Elena and Bill Richardson, a wealthy white couple who epitomize success in picture-perfect, late-90's Shaker Heights, and their four teenage children, including girl-next-door, Lexie and the troubled prankster, Izzy, who is suspected of arson. "The firemen said there were little fires everywhere," Lexie says. "Multiple points of origin. Possible use of accelerant. Not an accident." Author Ng returns to the past for answers.

We will gather at Curt and Kelly Monson's home on Forest Lake at 8336 North Shore Trail and head out on the pontoon for an evening of conversation and connection. Contact Pastor Linda with questions.
