Year 3 at WCA was a success story!

Dear WCA Community,

I recently heard an inspiring message from a speaker who challenged people to understand their part in writing their own story of either success or failure in life. The speaker went on to explain how we can make or break our path by how we frame our successes and failures (both individually or collectively). I wanted to pass along his challenge and ask, "What is YOUR story here at World Compass Academy?" The beginning of WCA's story has had its share of ups and downs, but I am thankful that the majority of the WCA story has been about how we have faced adversity and continued to grow year to year.

The story that will be recorded in the history of WCA will likely include the following:
  • Academic & Program Success
    • CDE top academic performance rating (Performance Level)
    • Grown from a PreK - 5th grade school to a PreK - 8th grade school in our fourth year (2018-19)
    • Recognized Cougar Essential Award winners each trimester and overall winners for the year
    • Celebrated the New Moon Festival, Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, Hispanic Heritage Month and Cinco de Mayo
  • Financing Success (based on our performance since we opened)
    • Bought out current building from our investor/developer through private bond financing (similar to a home loan/bridge loan)
    • Secured additional public bond financing to complete a new building
  • New Building Success
    • Main floor cafeteria, art room (with kiln), music room, science lab/classroom, and additional instructional support space (SPED, MTSS/RTI, READ, ESL, Admin, etc.)
    • Dedicated science lab
    • Upper floor for middle school with 5/6 on one end and 7/8 on the other
    • "Topping Off" student/staff signed beam visible thru ceiling viewing area
    • Regulation-size soccer/playground artificial turf field (to be completed in September)
    • On budget and on time
Highlights of our WCA 18-19 program:
  • Each middle school student (5th - 8th) will have their own chromebook
  • Average of 14 different middle school electives (alternating A & B days)
  • Middle school sports: Girls' volleyball, basketball, soccer, & cross-country; Boys' basketball, soccer, & cross-country
  • International focus on different cultures, including immersion foreign language instruction
  • Mastery based learning with differentiated instruction (i.e. ability grouping: below grade level, at grade level, at grade level with a faster pace, and above grade level).
  • Positive and safe school culture with an emphasis for staff and students on our WCA Cougar Essentials of Leadership, Manners, Compassion, Perseverance, Knowledge, Positivity, Respect, Integrity and Be the Best Person You Can Be. We challenge our adults to lead by example.
So, going back to my challenge. What can you do with your influence? What can you do with your ability to write your own story? How can you influence other people's stories? What are you doing for the betterment of all, or are you just doing things to make yourself look good?

Great school leadership is about being a good role model, an excellent steward, and an effective collaborator. It is also about being accountable and saying no to selfish desires and saying yes to helping others. This is the commitment of my WCA administrative team, and it is the pillar that will continue to lead and guide our school, staff, school board, School Accountability Committee, and PTO.

I am excited to return to WCA next year, and am looking forward to an awesome year! Thank you for helping WCA continue to learn and grow, and be the best that we can be. Let's be ready to go anywhere and be trained to do anything that life sets in our path!

Together we can grow WCA!
Together we can change our world!
Together we can change the world!

Sincerely,

Lance Howard
WCA Principal

P.S. Congratulations to our Kindergarten graduates and to our PreK students moving into Kindergarten next year!

New Music Teacher

Hello, my name is Madison Armstrong, and I am so excited to carry on Mr. Ballard's legacy as the Music Teacher at World Compass Academy! I also look forward to continuing the Music and Drama Clubs, as well as directing the choir and musicals!

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with an Emphasis in Classical Voice and a Minor in Sociology at the University of Denver. During that time, I had the opportunity to study Opera in Milan, Italy and perform in many choirs, a capella groups, operas, and musicals. I also studied Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis in K-12 Music at the graduate level, and student-taught High School Choir. After graduating, I worked as the Long-Term Music Substitute at American Academy.

Outside of teaching, I have a passion for traveling and global orphan care. I have a pet rat named Romeo. I also enjoy decorating cakes for friends and family!

Mandarin Field Trip

WCA 3rd - 7th grade Mandarin students went on a cultural field trip this past Monday to the Confucius Institute at Community College of Denver (CICCD). Students learned about the Chinese culture: calligraphy, martial arts, royal costumes, Beijing Opera masks, and more. They also learned how to make dumplings and got to eat them too! The buffet lunch had more than eight dishes. The food was so delicious that some of the students went back for thirds!  We are so happy to see our students' interest in the Chinese culture and language grow!

Message from the Registrar

Do you know how to access your student's information through your Parent Portal account? We are moving towards electronic grades and report cards for the 18/19 school year, and this will require all parents to access grades/report cards through Parent Portal. Please reach out to Mary Bertke before the end of this school year if you do not know how to access your Parent Portal account.

In addition, parents will be asked to complete Express Check-In this summer, and will need to have a Parent Portal Username and Password to complete this process. Express Check-In is the process all parents must complete to verify that your child's school has the correct contact information, etc. If you do not complete the Express Check-In over the summer, you will not have access to electronic grades/report cards next year. Thank you!
