FRIENDS OF THE ARC SUMMER 2018
Explore. Extend. Expand.
Dear Friend,
Summer is a great time to shake off old notions and let the sun shine on new ideas and initiatives. Whether it's bringing more Health Advocates like Jane Ross into the exam room, creating an inclusive workforce with talent like George or changing lives through a shared meal, our clients, families, staff and supporters continue to amaze us with fresh suggestions and unwavering support. Enjoy the fruits of your commitment to our clients' success!  -THE ARC SAN FRANCISCO

Meet 2018 Walter Slater Award Winner Jane Ross

The Arc San Francisco is proud to announce the 2018 Walter Slater Award winner: Health Advocate Jane Ross.
For the past 10 years, Jane has been a staunch ally of clients who rely on her steady support and extensive health case management experience. Jane's tenacity has often put her at odds with a health care system that can make it difficult for people with developmental disabilities to access the care they need. But her background in Psycholinguistics and Behavioral Psychology  gives her an edge working with individuals who often cannot communicate their health issues.
The award is in memory of longtime Arc supporter Walt Slater, a tireless advocate for his daughter, Anne, and her peers with disabilities. Candidates are nominated by Arc colleagues based on the values of teamwork, compassion, vision and civic mindedness. Congratulations, Jane!

"I used to be shy, but my Job Coach helped me relax and be more professional, too. Now I have a full-tme job in office services at Survata. It's amazing! -George, client of The Arc SF

Helping clients like George go further and be their best is our goal this summer and we hope you will be a part of this success.
Once shy and introverted, George and his Arc coaches work diligently to build his skills through a supported internship and lots of one-to-one coaching on the job.

Today he says, "I never thought this would happen--and now I want to help my friends."

That means success for a total of 80 job seekers for whom Arc services and staff are vital:
  • Internship Managers who assess, train and coach clients who are new to the workplace;
  • Employment Specialists who match each client's strengths to the best business fit;
  • Behavioral and Life Skills Consultants who provide special coping and communication tools.
 And thank you for your support!

Friends Like Me participants and Rotary volunteers enjoy an after-hours dinner together at The Arc SF.
Rotary SF & Clients Join Up for Dinner & Friendship

Rotary Club of San Francisco volunteers joined 25 clients recently for a lively evening of cooking, conversation and friendship at The Arc SF.
Participants in The Arc's popular "Friends Like Me" after-hours program were co-chefs with volunteers at the regular Monday Night Dinner Club, creating a healthy Mexican Taco Night feast including salad, tacos, guacamole and chips with plenty of spice and seasonings.

"Any night is a good night for tacos--but these were really good, really spicy tacos," said client Will Bernick.

A special thanks to Rotarians Rhonda and Bill Poppin who made the evening a fun fiesta, and to the more than 65 Rotarians who have been regular volunteers at Dinner Club since September 2017. San Francisco Rotary Foundation is a generous supporter of Friends Like Me and we can't wait for our next dinner together.
