State Association Recognizes Rising Star
Teresa Stanley, staff nurse at Prairie Living at Chautauqua, was honored by LeadingAge Illinois as the 2018 Rising Star.
 
She was presented the award, which is part of the association's Honoring Excellence program, at the LeadingAge Illinois Annual Meeting held in April in Schaumburg, Illinois.
 
Prairie Living at Chautauqua is an affordable assisted living community located in Carbondale, Illinois. The community, which features 125 apartments, is approved to operate through the Illinois Supportive Living program.
 
Gardant has managed the community since it opened in November 2004.
 
Expanded Presence in Minnesota
Gardant recently opened The Sanctuary at Brooklyn Center. Located in a suburb of Minneapolis, the community features 130 affordable assisted living and 28 memory care apartments.
 
Gardant also assumed management of The Sanctuary at West St. Paul. The community features 140 affordable assisted living and 24 memory care apartments.
 
In January, Gardant opened The Sanctuary at St. Cloud. The community features 101 affordable assisted living and 36 memory care apartments.

Moline Community Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The Heritage Woods of Moline affordable assisted living community celebrated its 10th Anniversary on April 12.
 
The community is located in the Quad Cities and is managed by Gardant.
 
Moline Alderman David Parker of the 2nd Ward and Quad City Chamber of Commerce Interim CEO Kristin Glass were among those offering their congratulations during the celebration.
 
Recognized as 10-Year Residents of the community were Betty Burns and Kay Wolber.
 
Recognized for ten years of service were Amy Fisher, resident services coordination; Donna Howell, receptionist; and Linda Maher, cook.







Thinning Skin, Bruising and Aging
As you age, your skin thins. A story posted on the Medical News Today website provides advice on how to manage thinning skin.

Also, bruising easily can be common among older adults. The Mayo Clinic has information on the role aging plays and when you should call your doctor.

In Pursuit of Trivia Honors 
Eight of the 12 teams of residents who qualified for the semifinals in the 2018 Trivia Contest hosted by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition are from Gardant-managed communities.

The teams will be pursuing trivia championship honors during the semifinals and finals slated for June 6 and 7 at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield, Illinois.

Battling for Bowling Bragging Rights
Also in Springfield on June 6 and 7, the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition will be hosting the 2018 Supportive Living Wii Bowling Championship.
 
Two teams of residents from Gardant-managed communities qualified for the Final Four. The Charleston Roller Bowlers from Heritage Woods of Charleston and the Bowling Brooks from Heritage Woods of Bolingbrook will be battling for the First Place Trophy and Medals.


Ribbon Cutting for Indiana Community
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held earlier this month to mark the completion of construction of Evergreen Village of Bloomington. Gardant is the management community for the affordable assisted living community, which features 115 studio and one-bedroom apartments.

Sitting and Your Brain
A story posted last month of the Medical News Today website notes that too much sitting likely is not good for your brain. The study also cautions that too much sitting can increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Physical Fitness and Dementia
Another story posted on the Medical News Today website suggests that being physically fit may slash the risk of dementia.

Sharing Expertise
Rick Banas of Gardant will be a panelist for a session on "Building a Senior Living Strategy to Reach the Middle Income Market" at the Post Acute 360 Senior Living Conference June 25 through 27 at the Gaylord National Resort in Maryland.
 
Banas also will be among the roster of speakers at the 4th Annual Interface Seniors Housing Midwest conference scheduled for June 7 in Chicago. 

Financial Abuse and Older Adults
A recent Wells Fargo study found that two-thirds of the financial fraud and abuse against older adults is committed by those closest to the victims, says a story posted on the Investment News website.

Another report that was posted on the Financial Advisor website suggests that those who suffer from abuse, including financial exploitation, die faster than those who have not been abused.

Older Americans Month
Every May, the Administration on Aging spearheads the celebration of Older Americans Month. This year the theme is "Engage at Every Age." The theme emphasizes that individuals are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich physical, mental and emotional wellness.

Celebrating Supportive Living
The more than 40 Supportive Living communities that Gardant manages in Illinois celebrated Supportive Living Week in April with special activities.
 
The Supportive Living program provides a wonderful affordable assisted living alternative to a nursing home or to struggling alone at home for individuals who need some help to maintain their independence. The emphasis of the program is onpersonal choice, dignity, privacy and individuality.
 
Most of the Supportive Living communities managed by Gardant are designed to serve individuals 65 years of age and older. Gardant also operates two communities that serve individuals 22 to 64 with physical disabilities.
