Transportation and Land Use Connection Program Announces Award Recipients
The
Transportation and Land Use Connection (TLC) program, managed by the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) and funded through a partnership with Salt Lake County, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), and the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), is pleased to announce nearly $1.2 million in total project funds to local governments for 2018-2019.
The TLC program received applications from dozens of communities. Awarded projects align with the program's goals and demonstrate the potential to make a considerable impact within the WFRC region. The TLC program supports local governments in their planning efforts, implementing the
Wasatch Choice Vision.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF YOUR COMMUNITY
Wasatch Choice 2050 Vision Workshops
The Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC), in close collaboration with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Utah League of Cities and Towns (ULCT), and Utah Association of Counties (UAC), has almost completed its latest round of community outreach efforts. Ten Wasatch Choice 2050 (WC2050) Vision Workshops were recently held throughout the region and participants provided feedback regarding the Vision, and ultimately the future of our region.
During these well-attended meetings, city and county mayors, administrators, planners, engineers, and council/commission members offered their insights during tabletop mapping exercises to evaluate the Draft Vision. This included transportation projects, land use patterns, and economic development centers anticipated between now and 2050. Comments received at the workshops will help refine needed changes to transportation facility alignments and modes of travel, regional land use types and intensities, and assigned priorities to development centers.
WFRC invites you to evaluate the
Draft Vision and provide additional feedback on the proposed projects, land use, and economic areas via an
interactive map (

Comments regarding the Draft Vision will be accepted during the public comment period, which continues through March 16, 2018. Upon request, WFRC staff is available to make presentations to individual county and city councils, as well as planning commissions, regarding the Draft Vision. Golden Spoke Rides and Event - June 2, 2018
The Golden Spoke Rides and Event celebrate the completion of over 100 miles of safe, separated, and connected multi-use trails linking Ogden to Provo. This event includes two simultaneous group bike rides. One ride begins at the mouth of Ogden Canyon and travels south, while a second ride begins at Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon and travels north. Riders will converge in the center of the connected trails at the new Jordan River Bridge near North Temple in Salt Lake City. Bicycle riders will have the opportunity to join either group ride at multiple points along the trails. Additionally, there will be community events hosted along the way, as well as a final celebration at the Jordan River Bridge, which will include guest speakers and family-friendly activities. WFRC monitored relevant legislative activity related to transportation and its nexus to land use and economic development during the 2018 Legislative Session. We have selected the following bills to highlight, as they especially impact transportation and our communities in general. Please contact

- Senate Bill 136 (S.B. 136) SUB.6 -- TRANSPORTATION GOVERNANCE AMENDMENTS (Harper/Schultz): S.B. 136 is a significant, positive step forward for the future of our region and state. Utah is growing and changing, and with that comes the need to efficiently use resources to provide transportation choices for our communities. S.B. 136 authorizes funding for transit and local needs, and enhances the coordination of transportation, land use, and economic development. - Senate Bill 71 (S.B. 71) SUB 4 -- ROAD TOLLS PROVISIONS (Niederhauser/Schultz): S.B. 71 is one approach to the ongoing issues regarding population growth and the need to invest in our transportation infrastructure. This would allow tolls to be charged electronically on new or existing state roads. For additional information, please view an article describing this bill.
- House Joint Resolution 20 (H.J.R. 20) SUB 1 -- JOINT RESOLUTION SUBMITTING A QUESTION TO VOTERS (Edwards/Fillmore): H.J.R 20 is a result of the Legislature and the Our Schools Now group coming together to increase revenue for our public education system and local roads. H.J.R. 20 directs the Lieutenant Governor to present an opinion question to voters at the 2018 regular general election on November 6, 2018, to see if voters support a $0.10 per gallon gas tax increase for local roads. The revenue generated will go to the state’s transportation fund, which would allow for additional state general funds to be used for state public education. If approved by voters, the gas tax would still need to be enacted by the 2019 legislature. For additional information, please view an article describing this initiative.

Air Quality: Science for Solutions Conference
Improving
air quality is a high priority for Utah residents, and is one of the goals that shapes planning efforts at WFRC. Members of WFRC have expressed interest in more in-depth discussions regarding air quality challenges along the Wasatch Front. If you would like to be better informed about the latest science and research relating to Utah's unique air quality concerns, the Air Quality: Science for Solutions Conference may be just the forum for you!
The purpose of the Air Quality: Science for Solutions Conference, hosted by the
Utah Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Air Quality; the
Program for Air Quality, Health, and Society at the University of Utah; and the
Utah State University Bingham Entrepreneurship and Energy Research Center, is to bridge divides that separate researchers of various disciplines from each other, professionals in the industrial and regulatory realms, and the public, as well as facilitate a cross-pollination of ideas and the development of solutions. Introductory remarks will be made by Alan Matheson, Director, Utah Division of Environmental Quality.
Please note, the deadline to register for the conference is Friday, March 16.
